SIÔN’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, Wow, how fortunate we are! I have just come off the phone with my cousins in Scotland and they were telling me what lockdown is like for them. It sounds even worse than we had last August and look at us now. Church is open, the cafés are woking, we can go shopping and to the movies. We do indeed live in the lucky country. In saying that things have changed a lot in the past 12 months and I am noticing it now, as we prepare for Easter. The usual things we did, and took for granted, are no longer usual and we have to prepare differently for each of them. So here is a rundown of what Easter (and the rest of April) looks like in the Melbourne Welsh Church this year from Palm Sunday to Anzac Day. Palm Sunday (March 28th) - Our postponed Picnic will take place from 12 noon at Beaumaris Life Saving Club. There will be a short (Palm Sunday) service to start and we’ll spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying each others’ company. Maundy Thursday (April 1st) - We will mark Maundy Thursday with a Christian version of a Passover Meal from 7pm. The venue is to be confirmed. Please register your interest with the Covid Warden or one of the ministers on or before March 29th. Good Friday (April 2nd) - There is no Way of the Cross walk this year, Melbourne City Churches in Action have already cancelled it. We will have our usual Good Friday Service at 9am. We will do our own version of the Stations of the Cross and it will be live streamed and made available online. Easter Sunday (April 4th) - On the day the clocks go back (DON’T FORGET) we will gather to celebrate the miracle of the resurrection at 11am. We will have a live and live streamed service from Church with a special Easter treat with morning tea after the service. We are hoping that Excelsis will be joining us for this special day. Once the Easter festivities are over our attention will turn to ANZAC Day. This year ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday. We encourage people to participate in your local Dawn Service and then join us at 10:50 am for our ANZAC Day service at church or online. As usual our service will follow the pattern of the Dawn Service from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra by sharing the prayers and liturgy of that service. If you want more information on any of these events or just want to organise a pastoral visit please call me, one of the Ministry Team or the office. Wishing you a happy and blest Easter. Yours, Siôn.
SARA’S MESSAGE The anniversary effect is when things you thought were safely in the past re-surface around the anniversary about something. You know what I am talking about, it's been one year since Covid-19 was declared a pandemic. That's 365 days, give or take, since we've hugged our friends, visit- ed our relatives, gone to the movies or travelled to a faraway place without worrying about the consequences. Twelve months since we last shook a col- league's hand, heard the roar of a crowd or left the house without needing a mask. A full orbit around the sun since we've been able to fully relax. And yet, we are gathering again and we CAN see our friends, even if we’re not supposed to hug. We CAN sing, even though we have to do so with masks. And it is exhausting. I don’t know about you, but I was exhausted after Sun- day’s service. It went well, only a few technical glitches, and it was good. But wow, was I tired afterwards. If the weight of all of things is taking an extra toll on you lately, you're not alone. You might be experiencing what psychologists call "the anniversary ef- fect." As therapist and counsellor Susan Harrington explains, our bodies and brains store painful memories that can be triggered by certain dates or sea- sons, such as the death date of a loved one, the annual reminder of a serious diagnosis, or, perhaps, the one-year anniversary … of a pandemic. PETER’S MESSAGE Imagine sitting in a room with strangers. You’re sitting in a circle and you are asked to close your eyes and think of the worst thing you’ve ever done. The person who’s asked all that question then says in a few moments I’ll touch you on the shoulder and you will tell everyone in the room what that thing is!!! Imagine your whole life being defined by that one thing. Imagine the potential for getting housing, work and friends based on that one thing. Imagine others always being suspicious of you. Imagine family disowning you. This is how it is for some of those I have contact with and support. When we meet and chat, read the Gospels and have Communion together it is in that space they know they are forgiven, they live with the consequences of a bad choice a wrong decision. So what is the worst thing you’ve ever done, it’s good to know you have been forgiven. What a friend we have in Jesus!!

Thank you Fred for everything - you have gone above and beyond your role and we will miss you!!! Everyone will be invited and we look forward to a wonderful evening together. Please keep an eye open for the date and let us know if you’ll be coming. 8 NEWS FROM THE PEWS I'm writing this edition of News From The Pews while sitting or the balcony of our fifth floor apartment at Beach House, Marine Parade, Coolangatta, Queensland , and the picture you see is looking out over the Coral Sea. We were first introduced to this great accommodation by friends way back in 1996 and have totalled up six months of stays here over the intervening years. Not really much to communicate this month but a friend gave me a page from a volume entitled, " The Welsh on Victoria's Central Goldfields", - a dictionary of biography , which I have devoured with interest. Most readers will know that the Church picnic normally a feature of the St. David's Day celebrations in Melbourne was cancelled because of the Covid crisis. However the Gymanfa Ganu was held on YouTube and what a wonderful occasion it was seeing all those great conductors and soloists who have made the time and effort to make the 19,000 km flight 'down under' to bring Wales and the Welsh here to us over the years. The Flag Raising went ahead as usual inside our wonderful historic church. I was particularly pleased to see the St. David's Cross displayed. Most readers would know what the St. Andrews, St. Georges and St. Patricks flags look like but I wonder if you knew that there is indeed a St. David's cross, and what it looks like? It is a yellow/horizontal and vertical cross on a black background. It is not a part of the Union Jack as are the three other aforementioned flags. Janet and I are still in recovery mode from our respective medical problems mentioned last month and are absolutely amazed by the aftercare bestowed on us by various agencies. Whist in Gwlad Y Frenhines (Queensland) we attend The Uniting) Church on the Hill at Burleigh Heads, and also attend a Wednesday morning Outreach there - The Friendship Group. Wonderful welcome always from people we now rank as friends. These include 94 years old Rhonda Barker, still driving, and related to our own Gail and John Rees.
My opening para last month mentioned Zeb son of our Rev. Sara and husband Brad, Zeb and his friend Jake,( whose name I unfortunately failed to mention last )., have been active around the church seeing that everyone is 'doing the right thing'. I understand that Jake has been appointed to take over the Office Administrators role of our church and I'm sure that there will be more in this issue about that and the retirement of Fred. Boomsma who has carried out the role with efficiency and diligence for the past several years. Your Intrepid Reporter- Medi Jones-Roberts 9758-0014 CONGRATULATIONS Sam Gardiner (Grandson of Diana) is now a member of the Australian Defence Force Academy. After a lengthy process, Sam was accepted into the Academy and flew to Canberra after an Appointment Ceremony in Melbourne. A Military Parade was held in February in front of the Chief of the Defence Force with Sam in full dress uniform (see picture). He will be in Canberra for the next three years before heading to Sale to fly with the RAAF. Whilst doing this, he will also be working towards a degree. Well done and Good Luck Sam!!!
INTRODUCING JAKE REYNOLDS - OUR NEW OFFICE MANAGER The Board of Elders have finally completed the process of selecting the new Office Manager for the Melbourne Welsh Church. Jake Reynolds is the lucky young man. Jake is currently undertaking Tertiary studies at Murdoch University, Western Australia……...no he is not commuting between Victoria and Perth, but completing his degree in Global Security, Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism Studies online. This enables him to work part-time with us and still maintain his studies. Jake has already commenced his role with us, spending a couple of weeks with Fred to get to know the ins and outs of the job. Everyone at the church welcomes Jake most warmly as he takes on what can, at times, be a challenging role. FRED’S LAST WORDS - not literally After 12 years I finally leave my position as the Church’s Administrative Assistant, and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone associated with the church for their kindness, willingness, support, and, most importantly, their friendship. My time at the Welsh Church has essentially been a happy one, and I take away many fond memories. A warm thank you to the Ministers, Elders, members and friends of the Welsh Church for their patience, assistance and encouragement to undertake my role to the best of my ability. In the words of a certain Church Secretary: “Diolch yn Fawr”
BRYNGWYN - YSBYTY IFAN Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States, is revered for ending slavery in the US at the time of the civil war. But while his roots in Snowdonia National Park are less well known they are a source of local pride. "Abraham Lincoln's great, great grandfather, called John Morris, lived up in Bryngwyn," explains Eirian Roberts, whose farm in Ysbyty Ifan includes the now derelict farmhouse of Bryngwyn. Lincoln's ancestors' journey began in a building which translates from the Welsh as the White Hill, and ultimately led him to the White House. John Morris' daughter, Ellen, emigrated to the United States with a group of Quakers, leaving Wales, it is believed, sometime in the first half of the 17th She met and married Cadwaladr Evans who came from relatively nearby, about 20 miles away in Bala, although the couple had not known each other before they both went to the US. They had a daughter called Sarah and she went on to marry John Hanks, and a daughter was born to them called Nancy, who became the mother of Abraham Lincoln. Bryngwyn is a solid, stone-built two-up-two down cottage which has stood empty since the 1940s. It is unclear if the building is largely the same as it was when Ellen Morris set out on her journey to what was then still a British colony. But, said Ms Roberts, the Lincoln connection is already known to some of those in Americans who admire the former president for what he achieved in their country's history. ABRAHAM LINCOLN QUOTES: “When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.” “You have to do your own growing no matter how tall your grandfather was.” “I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live up to what light I have.”
2021 ST. DAVID’S DAY SERVICE St. David’s Day , March 1, was celebrated at the Welsh Church with an 11:00am service conducted by Rev. Sion Gough Hughes. Calon Lan, Cwm Rhondda and the Welsh National Anthem were sung proudly albeit slightly muffled due to the compulsory wearing of masks. Church Secretary and Connexion Moderator, Christine Boomsma, called upon Dilys Greenacre who was the eldest church member Cambrian Society member present to assist with the official raising of the Welsh flag. Individually boxed lunches of sandwiches, fruit and Welsh cakes were enjoyed outside by all 30+ present along with the essential cuppa. A most happy occasion. 2021 ‘VIRTUAL’ GYMANFA GANU If you have not already done so, check out our St. David’s Day virtual Gymanfa Ganu on Youtube by searching Melbourne Welsh Church or via our website and checking under Media. It is a wonderful production and includes items contributed by a long line of our Welsh guests from previous Gymanfa Ganus : conductors, Eisteddfod blue ribband winners and soloists. The Church cannot thank these wonderful and talented people enough for their willingness and enthusiasm to help create this very special ‘event’.
HISTORY OF MELBOURNE - part 7 In November 1856, Victoria was given a constitution and in the following year full responsible government with a two house Parliament. For Melbourne, the major consequence was the magnificent edifice of Parliament House, Melbourne, which was started in December 1855 and extended to the present state between 1856 and 1929; it was not completed to the original design. The boom fuelled by gold and wool lasted through the 1860s and '70s. Victoria suffered from an acute labour shortage despite its steady influx of migrants, and this pushed up wages until they were the highest in the world. Victoria was known as "the working man's paradise" in these years. The Stonemasons Union won the eight-hour day in 1856 and celebrated by building the enor- mous Melbourne Trades Hall in Carlton. Melbourne's population reached 280,000 in 1880 and 445,000 in 1889. For a time it was the second-largest city in the British Empire, after London. During the boom, Melbourne had reputedly become the richest city in the world, In terms of area, Melbourne was already one of the largest cities in the world. Rather than building high-density apartment blocks like European cities, Melbourne expanded in all directions in the characteristic Australian suburban sprawl so Australians were afforded their Australian Dream of a "quarter acre block" in the suburbs, much like the American model. The middle classes lived in detached villas on large blocks of land, while the working class lived in reasonably comfortable cottages in the northern and western suburbs, and older areas like Fitzroy and Collingwood became slums. Most of the new heavy industry was concentrated in the western suburbs. The wealthy built huge mansions beside the sea or in the picturesque Yarra Valley. The new suburbs were serviced by networks of trains and trams which were among the largest and most modern in the world. Melbourne's civic pride was demonstrated by the huge edifice of the Royal Exhibition Building, built in 1880 to house the Melbourne International Exhibition.
