What Is BGMC? “Challenging Kids to Reach the World” Since 1949, BGMC (Boys & Girls Missionary Challenge) has been providing missionaries with the tools they need to take the gospel all over the world. BGMC teaches kids what life is like in other countries and encourages them to earn money to donate to missions. BGMC’s two-fold mission statement is: 1. To reach the kids of the world BGMC BGMC is the program that provides whatever missionaries need, is the kids’ missions where they need it, and when they need it. BGMC especially targets education program of: the children of the world by providing for street kids, orphanages, feeding programs, water wells, school supplies, sending kids to camps, The General Council of the and lots more! How to Present the Lesson This manual contains a rich diversity of missions education segments from which you may choose to construct a lesson that is appropriate for your students and for the time frame allotted for the lesson. Below is a suggested layout for a full-length kids’ church service or missions education class. Use whatever segments you think are best for your kids. ■ PowerPoint® Presentation Each BGMC missions lesson includes a PowerPoint® presentation. This can be presented as the complete lesson in and of itself, or it can be supplemented with additional pages that you’ll find in this document, such as Object Lessons, Recipes, Skits, and more. What You’ll Find in the PowerPoint® presentation: BGMC Countdown: This graphic video is a fun and upbeat countdown to start your BGMC lesson with a bang. Video Clip: This video tells about life in the country, a project the missionaries are working on, or some other interesting details about the country. Buddy’s BGMC Newsletter: This segment uses lots of great photos and captions to help the kids understand what life is like in the country. Let’s Look: This segment shows photos of things BGMC has done to help the people and the missionaries. The segment ends with suggestions of how to pray for the country. True Missions Story: This is the heart of every BGMC lesson, as it showcases a true story about a missionary or a local who has an encounter with God. This portion of the slideshow is programmed with audio narration as the slides move forward automatically. Scripture Picture: This rebus puzzle is a fun way to teach the kids the Key Verse. Each image will come into view with a click of the mouse (or hit the Page Down button). Digital Verse Traxx: Another fun way for the kids to learn the Key Verse. ■ Offering Be sure to set aside a time for taking the missions offering. Make this a fun time. Play upbeat music while the kids bring their offerings forward, or make a contest out of it. ■ Altar Call / Prayer Time The altar call should capitalize on the message in the True Missions Story. Use this time to let the kids seek God in their own way, give their problems to Him, and listen to His calling and direction for their lives. Pray for the country needs listed in the Buddy Newsletter. ■ Additional Features If you have trouble with the PowerPoint® The pages of this PDF contain many additional features you can use presentation, or if you have any questions to extend or enhance your missions lesson, including skits, recipes, about the lesson, call the BGMC office at crafts, and more! Take a look at the next page to see what you get. 417-862-2781, ext. 4090. We’ll be happy to help! © 2020 by Gospel Publishing House. All rights reserved. BGMC introduction D
What You’ll Find on These Pages The pages in this document contain a wide variety of options for your missions lesson. Choose which portions you think are best for your classtime. Here is a brief description of what you’ll find. Buddy’s Missions Newsletter*: This four-page newsletter helps kids become more globally aware of life in other countries, of missions at work, and of the need for the gospel to be spread around the world. Use as a take- home paper so the kids can remember the lesson and pray for the country. (Note: The featured child and photo are representative. For privacy reasons, real names are not used.) Words & Phrases, Kids’ Games, Fun with Food Words: Teach the kids a few words in the local language and a game or two that kids in the country like to play. True Missions Story*: This is the same story you’ll find on the PowerPoint® lesson. If desired, make copies for the kids to take home. The story includes coloring pages that younger kids might enjoy. LOOK What BGMC Has Done*: This page gives a listing of the many ways BGMC funds have been used to spread the gospel, help the needy, and change people’s lives. Object Lesson: Use this fun activity to teach a practical application of the Key Verse. This is often a good lead-in to a time of prayer and response from the kids. Scripture Picture: This rebus puzzle is the same one that’s provided on the PowerPoint® presentation. If desired, make copies for the kids to take home to practice the Key Verse throughout the week. Activity Page: This activity helps reinforce the lesson and teaches the kids about another aspect of the country. Do in class, or use as a take-home paper for the kids to do at home. Winnie’s Wecipes: A recipe is a good way to introduce the kids to another aspect of country life. Every kid needs just a taste, not a meal, so you don’t have to make large quantities. Make sure to check for food allergies first! Use the link on the Wecipe page to open several more recipes to choose from. ■ Additional Options Winnie the World Puppet Script: Winnie the World loves missions! This skit gives more details about country life and what our missionaries are doing. Use the link on the skit page to order the puppet or print the image of Winnie provided and attach to a craft stick to use as a paper puppet. Speedy D. Light Puppet Script: Speedy represents Speed the Light, the missions program for teenagers. Use this skit to see how the gospel is “speeding” around the world. Use the link on the skit page to order the puppet or print the image of Speedy provided and attach to a craft stick to use as a paper puppet. Buddy Games: If time allows, or for variety, have the kids play games with their Buddy Barrels, Buddy Boxes, or an inflatable globe. To download the Games document, go to bgmc.ag.org > Resources > Booklets. Thank You Letters*: Thank you letters from workers on the field can be found in the lesson folder on the DVD or in the downloadable packet. Many of the photos and information on the thank you letters are also part of the PowerPoint® presentation. *Indicates that this portion of the lesson is also a part of the PowerPoint® presentation. © 2020 by Gospel Publishing House. Brittany Early in the morning, Brittany wakes up, yawns and stretches. A fresh breeze comes in through her open window, and she can hear some goats bleating. Other girls are already up, so Brittany has to hurry to get her time in the bathroom. When everyone’s ready, they pile in a van and are taken to school just a mile down the road. At school, Brittany will get breakfast, lunch, and a good education. Brittany stays after school for volleyball practice, then she’s picked up in a van and taken home to Hillcrest. And just in time, too, because she’s hungry! Life in a Cottage Brittany lives in a “cottage” with eleven other girls from the ages of four to sixteen. A cottage looks a lot like a normal house but it’s bigger and has lots of bedrooms. Two girls share each bedroom. There’s also a large living room and dining area. With so many people in one house, it can sometimes feel crowded! But the best part is, there’s always someone to play with and someone to help with homework. Feeding the Spirit Brittany joins all the other kids from Hillcrest in church on Sunday mornings. They pile in a van, and their house parents drive them to church to worship together. On Wednesday nights, they have special chapel services right there on the Hillcrest campus. They have a great time of worship and preaching, and often the kids will get up on the stage to sing or share a talent God has given them. © 2020 by Gospel Publishing House. All rights reserved. A Safe Place to Live Picture 1 Nine-year-old Bobby* sat in the back of his mother’s car along with his younger brothers and sister. His mother drove and drove to nowhere in particular. It was summer, so the car was very hot inside. The air conditioner didn’t work and there was no money to fix it. Picture 1 Finally they pulled off the road and parked at a truck stop. There was no money for a motel room, so this is where they would spend the night. Bobby tried to find a comfy way to sleep with his two brothers in the back seat. His mother and sister slept in the front. Picture 2 He didn’t sleep well. Not only was it hot, he never felt safe. Noises woke him all during the night. Picture 2 Strange men would come too close to the car, and sometimes they’d look right in! Bobby was scared, not only for himself but for his younger brothers and sister. He wanted to protect them, since he was the oldest. But what could he do? The car was not a safe place to live. Finally morning came. Bobby ran into the rest area to use the bathroom and splash some cool water on his face. Picture 3 When all the kids were ready, they climbed back in the car to drive to the next truck stop. On the Picture 3 way, his sister said, “I wish I could take a bath.” Bobby scratched his dirty hair with a dirty hand, wishing he could too. Picture 4 After years of living like this, his mother finally found a house in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It was a run- down old place, but it was better than sleeping in a car. Even though they had a home, it wasn’t a happy home. His mother got a new boyfriend who didn’t like the kids very much. There was a lot of Picture 4 yelling and sometimes fights became violent. This wasn’t a safe place to live either. Picture 5 Bobby’s mother and her boyfriend drank a lot and took drugs. The little bit of money they had was spent on gambling instead of groceries. All too often, Bobby went to bed with hunger pains in his stomach. Picture 5 Picture 6 Bobby tried to take care of his little brothers and sister. He’d look for food that other people had thrown away. He tried to find them clothes to wear. And he tried to protect them from violent fights. By the time Bobby was eleven years old, he was already acting like the adult in the family. Picture 6 *Name has been changed © 2020 by Gospel Publishing House. All rights reserved. Picture 7: At least he got to go to school, but it was hard to make friends. He did have one friend—a boy whose name was Jason. Jason lived at a place called Hillcrest Children’s Home. Jason said, “It’s a great place, Bobby, you’d love it! You should come live there too.” Bobby didn’t know if that would be the best thing, but he thought about it. Picture 7 Picture 8: A few weeks later, he got the news that his family had to move out of the house. Once again they were on the move, this time from one run-down hotel to another. These were noisy places filled with strangers. They were not safe places to live. Finally someone from a state agency came to take Bobby and his brothers and sister to a better place. They stayed in a shelter in the city of Little Rock, Arkansas, about one hour away from Hot Springs. Picture 8 Picture 9: While in the shelter, Bobby remembered what his friend Jason had said about Hillcrest Children’s Home, so he asked the state workers if he and his brothers and sister could live there. The workers discovered that there was enough room for them at Hillcrest, so Bobby gathered up everything they owned, put it all in one trash bag, and headed back to Hot Springs. Picture 9 Picture 10: When they arrived at Hillcrest, Bobby was taken to a big house called a “cottage.” A man opened the door and said, “Welcome, Bobby. I’m Steve and this is my wife, Shellie. We’re your house parents.” Bobby was given a bedroom to share with another boy his age. All together, ten boys were living in that one house. Steve said, “Hurry and get washed up, Bobby. It’s almost time for dinner.” For the first time in a long time, Bobby got to take a hot shower. When he was ready, he followed Steve and the boys to a big dining room. Many other children—both boys and girls—sat around tables, along with their house Picture 10 parents. Picture 11: Not only were there lots of kids, there was lots of food! For the first time in his life, Bobby had a healthy meal and a full stomach. After dinner, his sister ran up to him and said, “They let you take a bath every day here! And they gave me my own blanket!” At that moment, Bobby knew that he and his family had found a safe place to live. Picture 11 Picture 12: Every Sunday, Bobby and his brothers and sister joined the others at church. There he learned that God loved him so much that He sent His Son Jesus to die for him. Bobby knew those words were true because he had felt the love of God through the people at Hillcrest. He thought about where he had come from and how God brought him to this place where he could feel safe and loved. So one day, he let Jesus into his heart. Picture 12 Picture 13: Now Bobby is attending college and has a job. He says, “Hillcrest helped me to be who I am today. It changed my situation and gave me something I couldn’t get anywhere else—a safe place and a relationship with Jesus Christ.” Picture 13 Picture 14: Hillcrest has changed the lives of many boys and girls just like Bobby. BGMC helps by providing Hillcrest with various kinds of materials, supplies, equipment, and furniture. Thank you, kids, for giving to BGMC so that kids like Bobby have a safe place to go. Object Lesson Use this fun activity to teach a practical application of the Key Verse. This is often a good lead-in to a time of prayer and response from the kids. On the next page, the sentences the leader should say are shown in bold type. The actions the leader should do are shown in italic. You don’t have to read the text verbatim. Feel free to put it in your own words. ■ Presentation If you feel adventurous, and if it’ll work in your classroom situation, be prepared to pour water from a sprinkling can over the umbrella. Lay a tarp on the floor to contain the mess. (Keep the umbrella out of sight as you begin this object lesson.) Have you ever been outside in a rainstorm? (Allow responses.) What are some things you’d like to have if you’re caught outside in the rain? (Allow responses. Answers might include umbrella, raincoat, hat, boots, etc.) (Open the umbrella and hold it over your head.) I like to keep an umbrella handy in case I’m caught in the rain. It gives me protection from the rainstorm. Ask a volunteer to come forward, and have him hold the umbrella.) Imagine you’re walking to school in the rain. Are you glad to have an umbrella? (Allow responses. Ask another volunteer to come forward and stand nearby.) What if you saw someone else walking to school in the rain, and they didn’t have an umbrella. What might you do? (The kid with the umbrella should move to stand with the other kid and share the umbrella.) Sharing an umbrella in the rain is a very kind thing to do. When you share your umbrella, you’re giving safety and protection to someone who needs it. There are people in this country who need safety and protection. Some are orphans who need a home. They need a roof over their heads, good food to eat, and a “family” to love them. The Bible says we should look after orphans in their distress. That means we should help take care of them and meet their needs. When we do that, it’s like sharing an umbrella during a rainstorm. You’re helping to protect someone from a difficult situation. The Bible calls this “pure religion.” OPTIONAL: Have two volunteers come to the front and stand on a tarp. Give one of them an umbrella. Hold a sprinkling can over their heads and tell them it’s about to rain. Ask the kid with the umbrella what he might do if it was about to rain. He should open the umbrella. Have him hold the umbrella over his head while you pour water from the sprinkling can on the umbrella. Talk about how the umbrella provides safety and protection from the rain. Ask the kid with the umbrella what he might do if he sees someone without an umbrella. Encourage him to share what he has in order to keep someone else protected. As the two kids share the umbrella, pour water from the sprinkling can over the umbrella. © 2020 by Gospel Publishing House. All rights reserved. Permission for local church use only. Winnie the World Skit Winnie the World provides facts about the different countries of the world. She knows what each country is like, where it is located, and how the people live. For this skit, use the Winnie puppet or print out the Winnie picture onto card stock and attach to a craft stick to create a stick puppet. Winnie the World Lves COMPACT Family Services WINNIE: (She enters carrying a pillow while singing her song to the tune of “Here We Go ’Round the Mulberry Bush.”) Here we go ’round this great big world, this great big world, this great big world. Here we go ’round this great big world, telling people ’bout Jesus. Hi, everyone. INTERVIEWER: Hi, Winnie. Why are you carrying that pillow? Are you getting ready to take a nap? WINNIE: No, but a pillow reminds me of kids having their own room to sleep in. INTERVIEWER: Kids love having their own room with their own bed and their own pillow, but what does this have to do with missions? WINNIE: Today, I’m going to talk about a ministry that ministers to kids that don’t have families or a home to sleep in. INTERVIEWER: This sounds interesting. What ministry is this? WINNIE: It’s called CompACT. It stands for “Compassion in Action.” It’s located here in America in Hot Springs, Arkansas. INTERVIEWER: How does CompACT help kids? WINNIE: CompACT has five different ministries. The biggest one is called Hillcrest Children’s Home. This ministry is a place for kids who are orphans, have been abused or neglected, or have been abandoned. INTERVIEWER: Do kids live in this one home? WINNIE: The Hillcrest Children’s Home is actually a 65 acre campus with six different cottages that can house up to 60 kids. INTERVIEWER: Wow, I was thinking there was just one house to put kids in. What are the cottages like? © 2020 by Gospel Publishing House. All rights reserved. Permission for local church use only. BGMC lesson: CompACT 13.18
WINNIE: Each cottage looks like a normal house but is bigger and has lots of bedrooms. Two kids share a bedroom. It also has a large living room and dining area. Each cottage also has a house parent living there. INTERVIEWER: What is a house parent, and what do they do? WINNIE: Since the kids have no parents, the house parents are like parents for the kids. They take care of the kids, help with homework, read to them, play with them, take care of them when they are sick, and pray with them. INTERVIEWER: That’s amazing, Winnie. Do the kids get to go to church? WINNIE: Yes, every Sunday all the kids go to a church nearby. On Wednesdays, they have a chapel service on the Hillcrest campus. Kids are shown the love of Jesus, because Jesus can heal their hurts. INTERVIEWER: Jesus can be a best friend for these kids that have gone through so much. Does BGMC help CompACT? WINNIE: Yes. BGMC provides funds for clothing, backpacks, repairs on the buildings, furniture, computers, and lots more. INTERVIEWER: Sometimes people think BGMC only helps in other places around the world, but BGMC also helps ministries right here in America. WINNIE: BGMC helps many ministries here in America. Thank you, kids, for giving to BGMC! INTERVIEWER: How else does CompACT get money to help with their ministry? WINNIE: Anyone from anywhere in the U.S. can sponsor one or more kids at Hillcrest. Their monthly support helps to provide food and clothing for that child. Sponsorship is another way to show God’s love to the kids. INTERVIEWER: It sounds like sponsorship is very important to the ministry of CompACT. Thank you for coming today, Winnie, and for telling us about CompACT. Good-bye. WINNIE: Good-bye, everyone. Whenever you lay your head on a pillow, remember to pray for the kids at the Hillcrest Children’s Home and for the other people working with CompACT. Sing with me as I go. (She exits singing her song.) Here we go ’round this great big world, this great big world, this great big world. Here we go ’round this great big world, telling people ’bout Jesus. Speedy D. Light Skit Speedy D. Light represents the Speed the Light missions program for teenagers. Teens raise money to buy vehicles and other equipment for missionaries. These vehicles are often used to transport materials purchased by BGMC. The vehicles take our missionaries wherever they need to go in order to reach the lost. For this skit, use the Speedy puppet or print out the Speedy picture onto card stock and attach to a craft stick to create a stick puppet. (As the skit begins, Speedy comes racing from behind stage. Screeching car brakes are heard and up pops Speedy. He has a Spanish accent and talks very fast. He hardly stops for a breath. When he gets too excited, he beeps. His catchy key line is, “I am so excited! Beep! Beep!”) Hi, boys and girls! Did you know that there are kids here in America who don’t have a place to live? Sometimes their parents have died or in prison, or simply not able to take care of them. CompACT is a ministry that helps kids like those. They have a home called Hillcrest which provides a place for homeless kids to live. I am so excited! Beep! Beep! Christian workers dedicate their lives to help these kids. But guess what? You do too! Your BGMC funds help to support CompACT. Your funds buy beds, dressers, clothing and food. Your funds help to build new dormitories and buildings for these kids to live in and go to school in. Your BGMC funds are helping these kids have a wonderful life! I am so excited! Beep! Beep! The teenagers are helping too! When they give to Speed the Light, the funds provide ministries like these with a vehicle! At Hillcrest they have Speed the Light vans, which are used to take kids to the doctor, to camps, and to other events where they can continue to learn about Jesus. Thanks to Speed the Light and BGMC, the kids at CompACT continue to have a safe place to live. Many of them graduate from there and go on to live wonderful lives and serve God in many ways. Keep giving to BGMC, and tell your older brothers or sisters to give to Speed the Light. Together we are reaching the world! I am so excited! Beep! Beep! Well, I gotta go! Why not set a goal this month and see how much you can earn for BGMC? God will do amazing things through your life! There are so many places that need Jesus. (He races off and the sound of squealing tires is heard.) Click here to order a Speedy puppet © 2020 by Gospel Publishing House. All rights reserved. Permission for local church use only.
