Scri pture Read ing... Sunday: The Baptism Casting a Net of the Lord Is 42:1-4,6-7 or 55:1-11 Ps 29:1-4,9-10 or D ear sisters and brothers in Christ, Is 12:2-6 Acts 10:34-38 or KJ Dyer was fitted with a prosthetic leg at the age of 2 at Scott Sabolich Prosthetics in 1 Jn 5:1-9 Oklahoma City a few weeks ago. As he was being discharged from the clinic the ABC World News Tonight Cameras recorded his walk down a long corridor. Parents at his side, he stumbled along Mt 1:7-11 with his walker, when at the end of the corridor he saw a stranger, Blake Leeper, sitting on the floor, Monday: coaxing him forward. As KJ painfully made his way closer, Blake jumped up and KJ saw that he was a Heb 1:1-6 double amputee, with two prosthetic legs. Leeper is a Paralympic sprinter, a medalist, and is able to Ps 97:1,2b,6,7c,9 outrun many professional athletes with two human legs. KJ saw that he was joyful, irrepressible, and fun-loving, and right away his little brain began imagining what is possible with a prosthetic leg. To Mk 1:14-20 visualize is to create possibility…. By the time his parents got him home little KJ’s brain had begun Tuesday: reprogramming his lower body. KJ cast aside the walker and was already walking and running on his Heb 2:5-12 own, exploring the house and imagining the future. Ps 8:2ab,5-9 Today we celebrate the baptism of our role model in the faith, Jesus of Nazareth. For 30 years he had Mk 1:21-28 lived a quiet family life, absorbing the lessons of his parents. He had come to love the Scriptures and knew the stories of the heroes of the Jewish faith. But something tugged at him. He knew that his Wednesday: cousin, John was baptizing people at the Jordan, calling them to repentance. Heb 2:14-18 Ps 105:1-9 Theologians are not sure why Jesus agreed to be baptized by John. He did not need to be cleansed of Mk 1:29-39 sin. Maybe it was because he needed a dramatic beginning for his public life. But a significant thing happened at his baptism. He saw the sky “torn open” - surely a sign that earth would become Thursday: charged with heaven. He saw the Spirit descend on him in the form of a dove - surely a sign that he Heb 3:7-14 would be God’s messenger. To visualize is to create possibility. Ps 95:6-7c,8-11 No sooner had God said from heaven “This is my beloved Son: with You I am well pleased” than the Mk 1:40-45 Spirit urged and accompanied Jesus into the desert to be tested by Satan, the false spirit, to clarify his Friday: mission, and to develop stamina for the path that would lead to the cross and resurrection. Heb 4:1-5,11 Our personal path in 2021 will likely involve significant testing - perhaps illness, or financial challenge, Ps 78:3,4bc,6c-7,8 or personal loss. Mk 2:1-12 Recently I learned that I have Parkinson’s Disease, and that significant challenges await me along my Saturday: path. I am grateful to you for your prayers and encouragement. I am thrilled to discover the resources Heb 4:12-16 available in Grand Rapids, including the Hauenstein Institute at Mercy Saint Mary’s Health Center, Ps 19:8-10,15 where my doctor, Jessica Hedeman, DO, is director of the movement disorder clinic. Saint Mary’s Mk 2:13-17 Spectrum, and the Van Andel Institute offer many aerobic movement classes and support groups, as well as research. Cathedral parishioners have shared with me their rich experiences of Parkinson’s Sunday: disease and treatment. 2nd Sunday in Like KJ who lost a human leg and gained a prosthetic leg, my brain is reimagining what is possible. Ordinary Time With Jesus as a joyful, irrepressible companion and role model I know that the Spirit of God will 1 Sm 3:3b-10,19 accompany me into the desert to build my stamina and refine my discipleship. Ps 40:2,4,7-10 1 Cor 6:13c-15a, So, here’s a thought experiment….What path is God leading you along this year? How will the forces of the Holy Spirit, Jesus, John the Baptist, God the Father - 17-20 and the challenge of the false spirit - dynamically work together to refine your Jn 1:35-42 discipleship and give you stamina for the journey of 2021? To visualize is to create possibility. page 3 Rev. Bill Edens, CSP Associate Pastor Fr. Bill Edens, CSP
