St. Thomas More Catholic Parish & School Pentecost Sunday | May 23, 2021 Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. What’s Inside: Blood Drive Graduation Mass Congratulations STM Catholic Class of 2021
SUNDAY, MAY 23, 2021 pastor’s note One of the beautiful, and often unobserved, aspects of the Pentecost liturgies is the fact that the Mass readings at the vigil, on Saturday evening, are different from those proclaimed on Sunday morning. I would encourage those of you who have and use the Magnificat to look at the vigil readings, beginning on page 343. The passage from the Book of Genesis, 11:1-9, is the story of the Tower of Babel. Fast forward to the Sunday selections and on page 362 you will find the first reading being the description of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost In one, we see that humanity, in its arrogance and pride is attempting to become the focus of attention for the whole world, building a tower to the heavens so that all will know how majestic they are. In fact, the mixing of the languages makes them unable to even understand one another, let alone accomplish anything of such majesty. The second has the Third Person of our God, the Holy Trinity, making it possible that the world changing effects of God come among us can not only be expressed, but expressed in ways that all present, no matter their background and language differences, are able to hear and be moved to conversion and baptism. As a consequence, the Gospel message is proclaimed throughout the world to this day. There are over one billion Catholics alone and many other Christians who have heard the message. And yet, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the Church, is far from done. You and I are called to be a continued echo of the good news in our lives, our families, our communities. I would ask you to spend some time in prayer this week and ask the question, can I remember a time when I actually spoke about the wonder, mercy, compassion and call of our Lord to another person? Have I used the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit I received in my Confirmation to further the work of our God in bringing repentance and conversion to our world, or at least the part of it I am in? If the Lord’s work is not finished, have I accepted my role in making it known in my own life? May the joy and blessings of this Pentecost Sunday fill your life and actions throughout the year. There will be no Confessions this coming Thursday evening as we will have the Graduation Mass for our St. Thomas More eighth grade. Pray for these youth of our community that as they prepare to move on to other schools and different groups of students they will go forth with a strong faith and the knowledge that their years at STM Catholic has helped emboldened them for what lies ahead. A few comments regarding the ongoing changes and developments as we move forward this month with folks returning to their Sunday Mass obligation and the surrounding aspects of the community. I remind you that those who have received their vaccines are free to not use their masks. Those who have not are encouraged to continue using them for their sake and their care for those around them. You will notice many still are wearing their masks at church. I mentioned last week that we shouldn’t judge. Some might be doing it because they have not gotten the vaccination and that is their decision and we should respect it. At the same time, their evidence of Christian care and concern for their neighbor is commendable. Others might just not feel comfortable yet being in a public setting without their mask, and that is perfectly acceptable too. We will also be continuing to livestream the 10:30AM Sunday Mass, but not the weekday Masses as of this weekend. As I mentioned last week, there are several weekday Masses available to view on television or the internet if one wishes, but since we are being asked to return to our Sunday and Holy Day obligation for attendance, the necessity of us showing a weekday Mass for those who were not coming before is no longer there. We will begin passing the offertory basket again this week and will be inviting the children forward at the weekend Masses to make their donation at the front of the assembly. And at the Sign of Peace, feel free to shake the hand or hug family members. But a simple bow and greeting of peace to others around us is appropriate. I pray that the health: spiritual, mental and physical, of our family of faith may be strong and assured in the coming weeks and months. I would suggest you do likewise. – Msgr. Tom 2
PENTECOST SUNDAY a reflection on today’s readings Grow as a Disciple “Come, Holy Spirit!” On Pentecost Sunday, which we celebrate 50 days after Easter, Jesus sends the Holy Spirit upon the disciples. The readings use the language of the senses to describe the powerful presence of the Spirit: a breath, a mighty wind, tongues of fire, a cacophony of languages somehow understood by all. Jesus sends the Spirit upon each of us as well. And while we may not experience the Holy Spirit with our physical senses, I bet each one of us has sensed the Spirit’s presence at different times in life: a homily that deeply resonated, a sense of awe at God’s creation, a “moral compass” that guided us toward what is right, or when we found the words to console a friend in crisis or vice versa. Just as the Spirit transformed the disciples and emboldened them to build up the Church by carrying on Jesus’ mission, we too can ask the Holy Spirit to guide us and strengthen us to be a force for love and unity in our families, parishes and communities. Go Evangelize In today’s Gospel, Jesus sends His disciples out to continue His ministry, assuring them of the presence of the Holy Spirit to guide them. We too have been given the gifts of the Holy Spirit and commissioned to use them to build up the Church. Well before we learned about concepts such as “emotional intelligence” or skills tests, St. Paul assured the Corinthians that there are many different gifts and ministries, but the same Spirit. Our gifts may even change as we move from one chapter of life to another. For example, high school and college students may help lead retreats or participate in service projects, young adults may build a parish website or lead a Bible study, those who are homebound may offer to pray for others in their parish. For followers of Christ, the only option not on the table is becoming complacent. As we move from the Easter season to “Ordinary Time,” let’s invite the Holy Spirit to show us how to be “extra-ordinary” in our discipleship in the coming days and weeks. Then follow through. Pray Do you sometimes get the Monday blahs? Try starting the day with the Prayer to the Holy Spirit, asking for guidance (and some pep in our step!) as we begin the week: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. – Written by The Faithful Disciple 3
SUNDAY, MAY 23, 2021 WELCOME HOME We are so grateful to celebrate Pentecost Sunday with you as the dispensation has been lifted and the mask regulations have been reduced. As we implement the changes based on the national and state authorities, we will continue to utilize best practices, encouraging those not vaccinated to wear a mask and urge all of us to practice appropriate social distancing. Thank you for your continued respect and consideration of each other as we share in the celebration of the Eucharist together. Returning to Mass Q&A In this time of transition and return to more familiar worship practices, we have asked Sue Kenfield parishioner and local specialist to share some thoughts and reflections: How do I adapt to all the recent changes? Last week the CDC changed their mask guidelines, and the Governor of Colorado lifted the mask mandate. Many churches have now lifted their mask mandates and other restrictions. These changes are cause for celebration for many and cause for concern for some. The changes we are experiencing now have been unfolding over time with careful consideration and planning. Here are some suggestions to help you adapt and move forward with resilience. Change invites us to be more flexible in our thinking and our approach. Those who feel these changes are happening too fast may be feeling pushed out of their comfort zone. Take some time to recognize and honor how you are feeling. It is okay to be uncomfortable. Then pivot to what you can do to feel comfortable while still attending Mass in person. It may be carrying your own hand sanitizer or wipes or possibly attending Mass in McCallin Hall. These changes may lead to uncertainty. Now is a time for faith and trust. It is also essential to recognize that we live with uncertainty every day. Recall these words from Jeremiah, “For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11) Embrace change. Part of the human dynamic is to resist change partly because of our negativity bias; we view most change as unfavorable. Consider all the positive developments over the last year and the reality of therapeutics, vaccines, and the dropping COVID hospitalizations. Then consider the benefits of gathering in person again, at church, and beyond. God hard-wired us to connect in person. Let us rejoice in His grace as He leads us forward.
