Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 25, 2020 love me!!! And I have experienced moments intentionally and unintentionally where I was hurt by unloving actions. I bring this up because the Church places a strong emphasis on the family being the first place that God is experienced (The family is call the Domestic Church—the House Church!) and it is the building block on which all of our culture and society depends. The culture also places the family under attack… seeking to reduce and separate families into individuals. SUBSIDIARITY IS SUPPORTING FAMILIES The Catholic Social Teaching principle of subsidiarity identifies which level of organization is appropriate to address a challenge or difficulty. Applying subsidiarity is about trying to address a problem in a meaningful way at the most local level possible. This recognizes that a rule made at a national level may not really address the situation in my local reality. I wouldn’t write a US Congressman about repaving a county road. They are not in a position to deal with that problem and appropriately resolve it. SUBSIDIARITY AS BUILDING BLOCKS Parents have rights, obligations, and responsibilities in the raising I was looking for a lego-based meme because I always see legos as of children. For example, a parent choosing how to educate his or building blocks when they are not crossing-the-floor-in-the-dark her child has a right to choose how the child is educated. Someone obstacles. Whether you follow the lego instructions or not, you could choose to partner with our Catholic schools or public schools have pieces to put together and that can go together in many or home school. The parent has the obligation to have the child different ways. Subsidiarity recognizes that our human world is educated. Sometimes conflict arises around the content that the made up of many different building blocks. Our contemporary school district or state desires taught in the classroom. Parents also world is dependent on the structures that support us. Our federal have the right to choose how religion or faith is transmitted or government is dependent on state governments that are passed on. In our parishes, we seek to partner with a parent’s dependent on county governments that are dependent on city and Catholic education of children through our schools and religious village governments that are dependent on the communities of education programs. These programs exist to help families in families and households that make up our world. Even while our this educating role, but we can never remove the parent’s American culture prioritizes the individual and individual liberty, responsibility for faith formation. Choices we make in how we live our American society and our Catholic Church are made up of and prioritize faith in our families is learned and heard much more families as the organizational foundation. loudly that anything we could say in a classroom setting. FAMILIES HAVE AN ‘I’ AND AN ‘US’ Since we live in a world that markets directly to the consumer… Within a family, each person has priorities, obligations, needs, directly to the individual. Our society encourages a aspirations, hopes, and desires. As a family experiences these, the ‘permissiveness’ that families have to limit and counteract. What decisions made at the family determines how we grow and go in we see, what we hear, and what we encounter impacts who we our world. As young children, we learned what was important in are, how we see the world, and who we become. What shows up our families by how we spent our time and how we celebrated life. in the media, on TV, and on the internet impacts us. History can We also learn in our families about how we respond to crisis, become rewritten with an ideological lens. The meaning of emergency, and tragedy. Sometimes a health care diagnosis love becomes warped and distorted by the presence of changes how a family prioritizes life, and sometimes a quick pornography. We have a society unwilling to answer when a change, accident, or loss causes us to move rapidly into heavy human pregnancy becomes a human life. Netflix and other emotions and grief. Families give us a sense of ‘together’ and ‘not streaming services have shows that showcase and being alone.’ Families are also meant to be places where we learn model aspects of the occult and witchcraft. Our world give us and experience unconditional love. access to information that is beyond our normal lived experience. I do also want to share a truth about my own family (and you may Parents and families have a right to choose how they experience sense that this applies to yours as well): my family isn’t perfect. My and engage the larger world. As a Church community, we seek to own family had its share of functions and dysfunctions… of help support and strengthen families in an ever-changing world. It’s strengths and imperfections… and when I’ve experienced hurt not easy. within my own family, it is amplified by the fact that they should Peace,

Knights News! We are Catholic men building a bridge back to faith. There is much good and necessary work to be done in this world, and that's what Knights do every day. ~Taken from the Knights of Columbus website www.kofc.org/joinus • Council #2411’s Family of the Month for October is awarded to Gary Hoefer. Gary has been involved with the Elgin community, our parish, the Legion, and has been a steadfast Knight for as long as I can remember. He is our past Grand Knight and now serves as District Deputy for District #18, Gary’s sons Jason and Aaron are also Knights and active in their Councils. Thanks, and God bless you for your service to the Knights of Columbus! • We are happy to announce that Supreme has presented Council #2411 the Columbian and Founders Awards for the Fraternal year of 2019-20. The Columbian Award is in recognition of the programs our Council provided for our parish and community. Just to name a few, we donated food and money to the Antelope, Boone, Holt, and Wheeler county food banks. Council #2411 donated $1,500 to area seminarians. We were active in Pro Life activities by hosting an eight-day Novena for Life at St. Boniface and Bonaventure parishes, and we provided $1,350 to the students who attended the Right to Life March in Washington, D.C. We also sponsored the Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest and the Free Throw Contest for our youth. The Knights also provided different prayer programs throughout the year for our parishes that included the Consecration to the Holy Family, first Friday adoration, and the Silver Rose. Please accept our thanks to all who helped make these programs possible and to all who participated! The Founders Award is presented to Councils who achieve their insurance quota. A special thank you to our K of C insurance agent Troy Foecking for his work in helping us to reach our quota. • Here’s a heads up on a few events happening in November! Our annual Memorial Mass for deceased Knights and the ensuing potluck will be held on November 11th starting with Mass at 6:00 PM followed with our meal at the KC hall. Someone will be at the hall prior to Mass if you would like to drop off your potluck dishes. The Knights will serve the items to help alleviate Covid concerns. • We are also hosting a just for Men’s Knight Out event at the KC hall on Friday, November 13th, starting at 7:00 p.m. and ending at 8:30 p.m. We’ll be serving beverages and a few heavy and light hors d'oeuvres. We’re looking forward to getting together with the guys and raising a few funds for the hall during these financially troubled times. Any man from our six parishes is invited. It’s great it will not go late so we can all get home safely to our families. Please share with our Council ideas and thoughts you might have that would help us better serve individuals or organizations in our area. Share your suggestions with our Worthy Grand Knight, Dave Kerkman, at 843- 6373.
