7 PRESIDENT’S REPORT It has been a very challenging year, particularly for us here in Victoria. I hope you are all remaining safe and healthy. Another year has passed quickly and tennis for seniors continues, in a reduced capacity, to provide great tennis, company, friendships, some travel and for some the opportunity to represent our State or even Australia on court. PRESIDENT BERT FAUX At Tennis Seniors Victoria we try to provide as many opportunities as possible, both for social and competitive players alike but with very limited resources available. VICE PRESIDENTS In Victoria we have been extremely lucky to have generous support from DICK BARTLEY Tennis Victoria, Tennis Australia, Tennis Seniors Australia, Kooyong Lawn MIKE EVANS Tennis Club, Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club and The Yarrawonga Tennis Club and Tourism Bureau enabling us to host some of the premier ITF points’ tournaments in the region at the most prestigious locations. Without SECRETARY support from the previous mentioned clubs and organisations the tournaments CATHY FAUX would be difficult to run, if at all, so please ensure our gratitude is expressed to these parties if the opportunity arises. TREASURER Victorians continue to do well both locally and overseas with many featuring often on the podium at prominent events. Congratulations to all who were ROB HUGHES selected in Australian teams throughout the year and to those who have been nominated for awards at various recognition evenings. Unfortunately, many events have had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. COMMITTEE MEMBERS As well as the ITF points tournaments we have a great calendar of other tournaments working closely with many clubs to provide tournaments and a WANDA HOWES great weekend or afternoon. These days are on throughout the year both in RENA ROUDA Metropolitan and Country areas. We are unsure what the remainder of the BILL SALE year will look like. Currently, we are working through various scenarios but with the uncertainty that exists we are unable to make any firm decisions. LEANNE SCOTT GARY STANTON Next year we are planning to run 4 ITF events,10 NRT weekend events and 11 Sunday social events. I encourage you to support as many of these events as you can. We are still looking for a home base which will enable us to provide more alternatives to our members as well as being able to support our valued sponsors. We will keep you updated as we progress this exciting initiative. This has stalled somewhat since COVID-19. A big thank you goes to Leanne Scott for her many posts in Facebook and Instagram keeping us up to date of happenings and some great pictures and news articles for us to enjoy. See our website for more details on upcoming events, our tournament calendar and don’t forget to add us on Facebook and Instagram. 8 ACT have cancelled the Australian Teams Carnival for 2021. The current situation is both Queensland and the Wodonga Tennis Centre have put their hand up to run the event, if the current restrictions are eased. Queensland is the front runner as they offered first. A decision is not expected until end of September/ October. ACT have not cancelled the individuals. If it can’t be run in January because of the restrictions in place, then they are offering to run it at Easter 2021. If this doesn’t eventuate then both Queensland and the Wodonga Tennis Centre have both shown interest. For those interested in team events Tennis Victoria run a Country Week tournament in February each year. Next year it is in Swan Hill. For details, please see the Tennis Victoria website. A big thank you to the committee Dick Bartley, Mike Evans, Cathy Faux, Wanda Howes, Rob Hughes, Rena Rouda, Bill Sale, Leanne Scott and Gary Stanton for their contributions throughout the year. Without the contribution of all these wonderful people things would fall apart very quickly. Many thanks for all your valuable efforts. Special mention also goes to all the volunteers and clubs helping at the Sunday tournaments, ITF tournaments and NRT tournaments this year again. If anyone would like to help us at any events or join the Committee then please get in touch with any of the Committee for more details as we would love to have you on board. As always, I welcome any feedback from members in relation to suggestions, concerns or constructive criticism on how we can best serve members moving forward. See you on the courts. 9 SECRETARY’S REPORT Well, what a difference a pandemic makes in our world!! We were so hopeful after our AGM last year to provide a wide range of opportunities for members to participate in as much tennis as possible. The last few months of 2019 passed without incidents, and Christmas came and went. 2020 saw The Australian Championships in Busselton, Maffra NRT cancelled due to bushfires but Country Week in Albury/Wodonga went well as usual. Then came Geelong NRT, followed by Frankston Sunday social and our last tournament (for some time, even though we did not know it); Oceania at Kooyong. S Since March, we have patiently listened to authorities announcing restrictions, changes, numbers relating to Covod-19 cases, loved ones passed on, arguments from various groups and political parties. Sometimes it has left us heavy hearted about resumption of the game we love. E As members of Tennis Seniors Victoria, we are all chomping at the bit for tennis to resume. Who knows when that will be? Be assured your committee is doing everything possible to be in C contact with the relative tennis bodies and keeping up to date with the latest information. Our primary concern currently, is to protect our members and keep us all safe and healthy. Please keep checking in to the web site to follow up on the latest postings. Bert Faux, our R tirelessly hardworking President, has been sending out emails to the entire membership when he considers it necessary and has spent many hours communicating with our governing bodies. I hope that you have noted from last November, 2019, our web site has changed slightly. It is E www.tennisseniorsvic.org.au I will always attempt to reply to requests and concerns. I do make decisions about what T information goes to committee and then onto members. If there is any area lacking in information or communication, I would be most happy to hear from you. When we are once again ‘Tennis Active’ and the quarterly TSV newsletter is happening again, I A am keen to have articles and photos submitted for inclusion. Please contact me whenever you feel you would like to contribute. Our email address is vicsecretary@tennisseniors.org.au and my email and mobile are on the R TSV web site. I would like to take this opportunity to thank one of our committee members, Leanne Scott, who is Y officially retiring from the committee but will still be responsible for our posts on social media. We warmly thank her for all the work and time she has given to TSV committee. We look forward to catching up with her again when tennis is back to normal. We, as your committee for senior tennis players in Victoria, aim to provide members with many opportunities to play with other like minded members. Enjoy your tennis and the gathering that is very much a part of Seniors Tennis and of course, the lifting of restrictions. 10 TOURNAMENT REPORTS 2019 VICTORIAN SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIPS - ITF 2 2nd to 5th November 2019 Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club Kooyong’s roses were in full bloom, the horses were racing at Flemington and tennis players were armed and enthusiastic to get some tennis played. We were all facing the forces of nature that long weekend of the Melbourne Cup - Rain! T Slight interruption (being optimistic!) Postponed matches on Day 1 and 3. O True credit goes to our players for being so supportive and patient with rain delays and being so resilient in very trying conditions. Our ever-committed U Referee Ande Hutchinson was faced with tough decisions and managed to finish the tournament by 6pm on Tuesday. 11 VICTORIAN SENIORS GRASSCOURT CHAMPIONSHIPS ITF Grade 2 22nd- 25th November 2019 Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club The weather on the Thursday before the Tournament started was “Horrendous”; 42 degrees with smoke and dust being carried by the gale force North wind. Only a few brave players, including some Western Australians, ventured on to the courts at around 6pm for a practice on the Grass. T The weather for the rest of the Tournament was excellent, with relatively light O winds and the temperature hovering around 30 degrees. U 160 players took part in the Tournament (Slightly more than last year), with 47 women and 113 men playing some great Tennis on the wonderful grass courts. 13 OCEANIA REGIONAL SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIPS—ITF RC1 March 5th—9th, 2020 Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club March in Melbourne at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club is a hive of anticipation for the major tournament on our Seniors Tennis Schedule in Melbourne – OCEANIA 2020. Ladies events saw reasonable numbers, with doubles and mixed events popular. Encouraging to see some new O ladies entering singles across all age categories. Loving Melbourne, we love our weather patterns! Complete wash out on Thursday U and rain again on Friday afternoon did not deter our support staff and Tournament Referee (Ande), all handled with ease. R The Tournament was proudly supported by our local, interstate and overseas competitors. In total we had 37 visitors to our tournament, competitors from Japan, Great Britain, Algeria, India, China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Holland. 17 N NRT SCHEDULE 2020 R NATIONAL RANKING TOURNAMENTS T We had a very successful event at Beaumaris in September 2019. Some of the participants shown below. N . A T I O T N O Due to unforeseen circumstances (bushfires), the scheduled event for Maffra in A U January, had to be cancelled. L R The Geelong event held in February, although low in numbers, was a success for all who participated. Thanks go to event supervisors who agreed to do the event at no N cost. The result allowed for a part payment of these expenses and a tournament profit was posted as well. R A Benalla has been cancelled due to COVID – 19. We are extremely disappointed as A M Benalla is where we introduced our NRT format last year. We have had to cancel Sale, Ballarat, Sale (a second time) and Royal Park also due to COVID-19. Let’s hope we N E can go ahead with all the remaining tournaments scheduled. It is not looking promising though. K N These events are enjoyed by all who enter and many new friends and I T members come from participating. N So, all please give the events a go and see for yourself. 19 TENNIS SENIORS SUNDAY TOURNAMENTS We have come to the end of another successful year with many new faces joining us. There have been a few changes, the most notable being Dick Bartley finally handing over the reins of convener but still being involved with the socials. A big thanks to Dick for his efforts over the years, it’s not always easy and plain sailing trying to meet the wishes of a large and changing group. We have also been able to welcome a new venue to our circuit, that being Essendon, who did a fabulous job feeding us. As one comes, another goes and Frankston has hosted its last event. Unfortunately, they will be losing their courts T and moving to another venue on hard courts, which were not considered appropriate for our purposes. Another aspect of entering these events I want to encourage is that you enter via O email, as this makes it easier to administer. There have been a few instances where I have not received an entry (or intended entry!!). To overcome this, I will email you a confirmation that your entry has been received, so if you don’t receive U the confirmation email, please try again. With the introduction of Tennis Seniors Victoria’s new website, we will be able to keep you up to date with the happenings of the Sunday Socials, both the upcoming R events and reports and pictures from events just completed and don’t forget to check the social calendar on the website in case of changes throughout the year. Also we should be able to use the website to inform you of an event’s cancellation due N to inclement weather, etc. I would like to thank all who have contributed to the season, either by playing A or helping me on the day. I hope you all have an enjoyable and safe festive season and look forward to seeing you all again when we are back playing. Sunday socials were held at Frankston, Royal Park and Essendon in M September, October and November. We are grateful for the hosting of these tournaments by the organised clubs and thank them for the afternoon teas and cups of tea and coffee. E Our 2019 season wound up in December with a successful round robin/dinner at Glen Waverley. Winners on the evening were: Ana Makidas, Nazarin Anthony, N Rob Hughes, Geoff Forbes and Ken Edwards. As always the tennis was enthusiastic and T the dinner was very much enjoyed by all. S Email: vicsecretary@tennisseniors.org.au Web Site: www.tennisseniorsvic.org.au
20 We welcome the West Brunswick Club which has been added to our schedule for 2020. Our first event for 2020 was held at Frankston. Whilst the TSV numbers were down, there was a good representation of local members and a good day’s tennis and socialising was enjoyed by all. Winners on the day were: Judy Jungling, Beth Huf, Geoff Forbes and Ron Findlay. Ron Findlay with Ron Milledge. Judy Jungling, Geoff Forbes, Ron Findlay, Beth Huf. Frankston photos generously taken and sent by Irene Robinson. Many Thanks again Irene. Unfortunately, our next scheduled event at Kooyong on the grass on Sunday 22 March was cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. We have also had to cancel the following events due to Coronavirus: Doncaster, Glen Waverley and Ringwood Central. It is not looking good for the rest of the calendar year. On a final note, if we get back on court, please arrive early, as early check in allows draws to be finalised, which then enables matches to commence on time. Also early notification of withdrawal or late arrival assists in finalizing draws. Ron Milledge Sunday Social Co-ordinator. 21 TENNIS VICTORIA SENIOR PLAYER OF THE YEAR At the Tennis Victoria Champion's Dinner held in October at Pullman on the Park, Shirley Whittaker received the prestigious award for Senior player of the year. We, as the TSV committee, were delighted to firstly nominate her and secondly to congratulate her on winning this award. Below is the detail we provided to accompany her nomination. We thank Tom Hancy for compiling this excellent nomination; he is a wealth of information. Shirley is an Australian citizen permanently residing in Victoria. She has played in the Seniors 35+ and over since 2007 but did not play during the period 2013 and 2017 due to the illness of her late husband Peter who was a regular player also in Seniors tennis. Shirley is currently ranked number 1 in the ITF World Women’s Seniors 35+ in the 85+ age group SINGLES with 2,600 points and number 5 in the world in DOUBLES with 737.5 points. ITF TOURNAMENT RESULTS FOR THE PAST YEAR 11-18 June, 2019; Won the Singles and Mixed Doubles, European Regional Championships, Poertschach, Austria 4-9 June, 2019; Won Singles, Werzer Generali Cup, Poertschach, Austria 22-29 September, 2018; Finalist in the World Individual Championships, Umag, Croatia 20-22 September, 2018; won two of her Singles and all four of her Doubles matches, World Team Championships, Doris Hart Cup for 80+ age group, Umag, Croatia Unfortunately, due to insufficient players, there are few events made available for older age groups for our lady players in Victoria and Australia. Usually, players have to travel overseas to find events to be able to get a high world ranking. Shirley has played down in the 80+ when these events are played in Australia but the competition is much tougher now that she is in the 85+ age group. Shirley has participated in Seniors Tennis since 2007 and has represented Australia 4 times in the ITF Seniors World Team Championships.
