Welcome to Vauxhall Motors Good afternoon and welcome to today’s North West Counties League Division 1 South game against league leaders Vauxhall Motors. We welcome their officials, players and supporters to the Step Places stadium here at Brookburn Road for what is their first visit to us, and we hope they enjoy our hospitality today. After reaching the heights of the Conference North in 2004 and having memorably knocked QPR out of the FA Cup in 2002 the club were forced to voluntarily relegate themselves in 2014 for financial reasons and re start in the West Cheshire league. They are certainly making a strong start to climbing the pyramid again and having re-joined the NWCFL this season they are running away with the league, and after Tuesday night’s win over Maine Road they are only 2 points away from automatic promotion. We have a tough assignment on our hands to prevent them achieving that aim today, indeed today’s game followed by Tuesday’s against 2nd placed FC Oswestry Town will probably decide our fate this season. Our bid for promotion suffered a blow last Saturday morning when, in our 1st game for 4 weeks, we went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Wythenshawe Amateurs in the 2nd game of the weekend NWCFL groundhop. We conceded a poor goal after only 4 minutes and despite our best efforts we couldn’t retrieve the situation. We weren’t helped by the referee failing to award the most blatant penalty you will see all season on the stroke of half time, when the Ammies keeper spilled the ball at George Blackwell’s feet. As he was poised to score into an empty net he was upended by the keeper, with the referee somehow deeming it not a foul. Even the Ammies officials stood alongside us couldn’t believe their luck. The day itself was a superb spectacle with a crowd of over 540, many of whom had travelled from all over the country. Our supporters as usual travelled in large numbers and once again made themselves heard throughout the game. The whole weekend seems to have been a great success with all the host clubs having large attendances way in excess of their normal gates. We should therefore thank Chris Berezai and his staff for once again putting in the hard work to organise weekends like this, which we are sure are well appreciated by all the clubs involved. We would like to thank Wythenshawe Amateurs who offered us the chance of a stall at the game, where we managed to sell an impressive amount of club merchandise, so thanks go to the club’s committee for their efforts in running the stall. Today is the first of 4 consecutive home games for us. As mentioned, we play FC Oswestry Town here on Tuesday ko 7.45pm. Next up is the visit of Barnton next Saturday 21 March ko 3pm followed by New Mills on Tuesday 24 March ko 7.45pm. Weather permitting it will be good for our supporters to have a run of home games after the recent spate of postponements. Thank you for visiting Step Places Stadium and have a safe journey home. From the Dugout… Good afternoon and welcome back to The Step Places Stadium to all the West fans. We also welcome everyone connected with our visitors Vauxhall Motors FC and hope they have all had a pleasant trip. Myself, the coaches and the players are all still bitterly disappointed with our loss last weekend at Wythenshawe Amateurs having gone into the game full of confidence from recent training sessions and friendlies- due to our weather interrupted last 3 weeks. After a sloppy start where we conceded the only goal of the game, I felt had some decisions (we all know which I’m particularly thinking about) gone our way it could have been a totally different game. The second half was a very open game, but we could not find our way through our opponents- something we have worked on in training this week. Vauxhall Motors are top of the league for a reason and in our last game against them (where I went to watch before taking over as manager) we were out played and were deservedly beaten on the day. This West squad you see today is very different to the one that lost that day and our plan is to prevent their promotion party from starting today - so as ever, it is good to be playing in front of our amazing home supporters and we are looking forward to what will be another great atmosphere. On the injury front it was great to see both Ash Woods and Matt Eckersley back on the pitch after long term layoffs. We go into today’s game with only Dontai, Coops and Tom Westall (all left back options) on the physio table and welcome both CJ and Tom Clarke back after not being available. Looking at the league table we have two very difficult fixtures ‘back to back’ with us playing both 1st and 2nd in the space of 4 days. The squad is fully committed to climbing up the table and continuing our push for a top four spot come the end of the season. Our mentality must remain the same. To be fully committed at all times, to approach every match with the intention of winning and playing well, and to challenge for promotion come the end of the season. I fully believe that the players will respond in the right way today and, with your fantastic support, we will be doing everything we can to secure another victory at The Step Places Stadium.
