empowering students September 2017 House News Continued Poseidon House My Room’s Mary McGowan spoke about her most recent work during Poseidon House’s whole school assembly on September 12. Mary provided great insight into the charitable organisation MAC that My Room is, how they raise funds for research in children’s cancers while also having the unique resources to support House Ladder families who are affected by the disease. During this assembly, Emilie Kalinna captivated the crowd with her musical talents as 1st place she sang and played the guitar with three performances. Poseidon 3862 points Each term, all houses raise funds for their chosen charity. As Mary was with us, we thought it was fitting that she draws the winner of our raffle. Ms 2nd place Runci was the lucky recipient. Additionally the dedication Apollo shown by April Wright, Elizabeth Worland, Miranda Hammond 3152 points and Brigitte Di Pietro in selling raffle tickets together with Zhanet Zyka, Maddison Crivitarese Junie Ha, Kyra Old, Ethan Hammond, Samira Bakata, Noah Crivatarese and Bill Truong who played an integral role in leading the assembly through their organisation and presentations. September 2017 empowering students Sport Sport and Recreation: First Aid Incursion On Friday 1 September all students who are taking the Sport and Recreation VET course had a first aid incursion. The students learnt how to perform proper first aid procedures following the DRSABCD process. Students experienced a hands-on approach to learning first aid, they practiced assessing first aid scenarios such as patients passing out, having heart attacks and even broken limbs. Students learnt how to properly wrap bandages of many body parts. Students even learnt how to deal with bites from snakes and other venomous creatures. Of course, students also took in the legal side of first aid and all had a go performing Students performing CPR on “Little Annie” CPR on ‘Little Annie.” To summarise all students really appreciated the day and learnt a lot. The IVET instructor did an amazing job. First aid is beneficial for all students across all career aspirations especially if they are wanting to have careers in the health and medical industries. Students practising first aid procedures Ben Huynh-Diep International table tennis tournament On Wednesday 13 September, the Year 7 Table Tennis Team represented Mount Alexander College at the Inter School Table Tennis Tournament. We were hosted by a table tennis enthusiast at the Coburg Table Tennis Stadium. The stadium was full of tables and some of them were worth $5000. We had lots of fun playing and when we weren’t playing, we were scoring games or cheering on our team mates. We made a heap of friends including a guy from Buckley Park called Eric who gave us each a sour strap as were packing up to leave. On the way back to school we stopped at the Coburg Park and found inventive ways to slide down the slide. Despite the cold weather, we all enjoyed a Slurpee on the journey back to school and none of us minded the fact that we got back to school soaking wet.
