Pastor’s Letter May 16/17 Living in the World Dear Parish Family, One of my favorite songs is Louis Armstrong’s version of “What a Wonderful World.” It is a classic and inspiring work which pays tribute to the beauty of the world, the energy of new life, and, most of all, to friendship. Some might consider it the most optimistic song ever written but composers Bob Thiele and George Weiss at a time when our country was going through a period of great unrest and racial tension. It was intended to be a work of hope and beauty in a time of darkness and despair. It seems to be a great truth that in every age we can look at the world and celebrate its beauty as we also see its tensions, tragedy, and ugliness. We live in a world that is full of life and hope, but also a place of fear and hate. In our Gospel this weekend, Jesus is sending his disciples into the world. More accurately, he is leaving them in the world as he returns to God in the resurrection and ascension. Theologians tell us that rising from the dead and ascending to God are really two ways of speaking about the same reality—but more about that some other time. For now it is helpful for us to look at how Jesus is describing the relationship his disciples will have to the world they are left in and sent to. Like Armstrong’s song, the world for Jesus is both wonderful and terrible. It is both the world as God created it, a beautiful garden meant to be home to all God’s creatures. Especially us. The world is also the place that hated Jesus, rejecting his word, hardening its heart, and destroying all that is good. How should the disciples live here? Jesus describes it this way. They are to be in the world but not of the world. They are to live here but belong to God. All during Lent, at the end of the Eucharist, we read this prayer: “Teach us Lord, how to live in this passing world with our hearts set on the world that will never end.” In other words, teach us how to use the world and not be used by the world; teach us how to love the world and all that is in it but not to be owned by it. It is indeed a wonderful world we live in, and more wonderful when we can see the good things of this world — its beauty, life, and our friendships, as pointing to something lasting and eternal. When we do this we are free, and we can enjoy the wonder of the world and also work for its healing. Sometimes when I listen to “What a Wonderful World” I am reminded of Saint Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love. Sincerely yours in Christ, Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Dr. Nathanson was a New York City Obstetrician-Gynecologist who, in the 1960's, ran the largest freestanding abortion clinic in the world, and was a founding member of the National Abortion Rights Action League, or NARAL. He presided over more than 60,000 abortions, doing thousands himself. In the late 1970's, in part because of the availability of improved ultrasound imaging, he began to question the morality of his actions, and completely changed his mind, becoming an outspoken opponent of abortion. He wrote extensively on the subject, including a book titled "The Hand of God: A Journey from Death to Life". In 1996, he converted from Judaism, and became Catholic, being Baptized by John Cardinal O'Connor. He always emphasized that he came to Catholicism after he became convinced that abortion was wrong -- not because the Church said so; he was attracted in great part because one could find forgiveness in the Catholic church. Dr. Nathanson died at the age of 84, and was buried from St. Patrick's Cathedral, in New York City. Medical Mission Support This summer the Raphael Mission Project will be traveling to Zambia to bring much needed medical and surgical assistance. Among those travelling will be parishioners Danuta Bennett, RN, and Dr. Jim Brady, a plastic surgeon. They are holding a golf outing on May 18th, at the Vineyards in Riverhead to help support the mission project. To find out more, make a contribution, or attend the outing visit their website. In Nomine Domini Progress :: Bell Tower! As promised, work on our Bell tower began last Monday. As of mid-week the new controller has been installed and the carillon is running. Ascension Thursday masses and Confirmation is taking some work time away from the church but we are still hoping to have the entire system operational by this weekend. If not it will be done first thing this coming week. If you happened to be up here on Tuesday our great lawn looked like a construction site. A team from PS&G installed upgraded transformers for our site. This meant being without power for all of Tuesday. Thanks to our maintenance team we were able to use two small generators to keep our phones and computers operating during the upgrade. It was all done by sunset! IN NOMINE DOMINI Another team ran the conduit for a network link from the rectory to the church. This is important because our sound system, bell controller, and future heating and air conditioning can all be controlled and programmed by computer. Thanks again to parishioner Nick Feldmann from Eldor electrical contractors for undertaking this project and donating his services.
