Srinivasu Saraswatula (Srini) Editor - Selfie & Fellowship | 2018-19 Dear 41ers Greetings. I am happy to present the fourth edition of Selfie. I wish you all a Very Happy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year. I am sure you spent the time reflecting & celebrating the year gone by and planning for the beautiful time ahead. Do wish your family on behalf of all 41ers The cover design of this edition of Selfie is WORLD OF HOPE AND PEACE. Beautiful design by our own 41er Khusroo Kalyanwala of Club 41 Delhi, Area V It’s a dedication to make the world a better place to live for our future generations. A world without strife, wars and fights over resources. A world with decreasing gap between the have and havenot's. We just can’t wish this to happen. We have a young population in many parts of the world esp our own country. The young across the world are now closely connected with the internet and social media. The disparity stares at them in an ugly way. This can only make them angrier, militant and perhaps make them walk the wrong path We are the only planet to have life in this large Universe. We don’t have any other place to go. Not as yet. We 41ers have achieved a level in life where we can contribute to make a better world – with money, ideas, time and other resources at our disposal. Collectively as 41 Clubs along with RTI we have strength of intent, organizational bandwidth to make it happen. Each in our own small way and collectively in a more organized manner make this world a better place. A World of Hope & Peace ...continued 03

Ulrich Suppan President 41 Clubs International World of Hope and Peace! It isn’t easy to expect a future world in Peace and Hope, but nevertheless my proposal is to start to support this values in our surrendering and in little steps – “Work small and think big“! And in this moment I think about our 41 International Community! The Key Word in our small 41 International Family is “Tabling“! Tabling at it best is to speak and work together with friends in the Club and with all in the community- for a better world and for the own development! Adapt-Adopt-Improve is a little help for bringing new ideas in the community and the hope this way would be successful! Another helpers are our values family and service! Family means our youth exchange program YAP: the knowledge about each other and the knowledge and understanding of different cultures brings you closer together- and hopefully in peace! Our Service program for „Support Education-young Generation“ support all education programs in our 41 world and make aware that education is another key for bringing peace! Bring young people together and support education are small steps for bringing Hope and Peace in the world and also in our Round Table Family! Greetings to you all in 41! Ulrich Suppan 41 International President 2018/19 06
Sukanya Lakshmi Narayan President, Tangent India, 2018-19 Dear friends, Greetings from Tangent India. Here’s wishing all of you and your families a very happy and prosperous new year!! The first quarter of my Presidentship is over!! All Tangent clubs pan India have successfully implemented the First quarter of my theme.. Health and wellness. Now it’s time for my second quarter theme.. Community service. This of course doesn’t mean that Theme 1 is over.. That is for life!! The Bingo card created by National Secretary Jayashree Chaudhry has turned out to be a great success. It has unified Tangent members across India. My club visits to various places has been bonds beyond boundaries, meetings have been once in a lifetime experiences. Every club I have visited has gone out of their way to make me feel special, way beyond royalty. As my son remarked.. “You are given a Head of State reception each time!!! “ Hubli girls are synonymous with hospitality and generosity. They treat you better than royalty. Hyderabad girls organized a trip to an orchid farm. Believe me, it was a surreal experience to have a meeting amidst the world s most exotic flowers. A huge learning curve for me. Vellore girls were a surprise package. I saw and learnt there could be a new dimension to friendship. They are more than family to each other, joking most politically incorrect and so much affection and laughter. Cherish every memory. Bangalore girls are my extended local family. My own Circle 19 members held a joint meeting hosted by my dearest friend Ashwini Surendar. If it’s January, it must be Mumbai. The Mid term meet is just a month away, 16th February at Salem. With the guest of honour being Paula Farnfield, Tangent international president. Salem Tangent club have planned a Ladies special MTM. Lots happening, lots to look forward to. Meanwhile, Celebrate Friendship. Yours in Continued Friendship Sukanya Lakshmi Narayan President, Tangent India, 2018-19 07
MAKARA SANKARANTI & ITS SIGNIFICANCE Makar Sankranti is celebrated as a welcome of pleasant sunshine into a harsh winter. It is the harvest festival that is celebrated across the nation, by different names. It marks the first day when the Sun enters the Makar Rashi (Capricornus). It signals the end of winter and the onset of spring throughout the northern hemisphere. From this day on, for another six months, the days are longer and warmer. There are twelve Sankranti in an year, out of which Makar Sankranti has been considered most important because from here begins the Uttarayana punya kaal (Uttarayana auspicious period). Makar Sankranti marks the transition of the sun into the zodiacal sign of Makara (Capricorn) on its celestial path, which is the first change in the zodiac after the winter solstice. It is celebrated on the first day of the month of Magha as per the Hindu Calendar. It is celebrated as Sankranti in Andhra Pradesh & Telengana, Thai Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Bihu in Assam, Lohri in Punjab, Uttarayan in Gujarat & Rajasthan, and Makar Sankranti across the other states of India. Why is it celebrated? Makar Sankranti is celebrated to express gratefulness to God, for the bountiful life on Earth, especially it being the beginning of the harvest season. Lord Indra, Surya and in some communities Lord Krishna are worshiped on this day. It is also a social occasion that brings together people of a community together, spending quality time, breaking away from the mundane. How is it celebrated? The celebrations across the country have some variations though at large, Makar Sankranti remains a harvest festival celebrated over 2-4 days. ...continued 08
...continued MAKARA SANKARANTI & ITS SIGNIFICANCE What is the significance of the celebration? The significance of Makar Sankranti is Uttarayana; during Makar, which means movement of the Sun towards the Northern direction, as the winter comes to an end. One crop having been harvested, they sow the seeds for the next crop. The six months of northern movement of the sun is followed by six months of southern movement. Traditionally, Uttarayana is considered to be a period of enlightenment, peace, prosperity and happiness followed by Dakshinayana, a period of darkness, ignorance and viciousness with immense sorrow. At the turn is Makar Sankranti, that symbolises and indicates that we should move away from the darkness in which we live (symbolically) and brighten our lives with positivity. The festival promotes oneness with all of God’s creations, giving importance to being selfless, tread the path of love and respect to all around. It promotes gratefulness and contentment. Further, Makar Sankranti demonstrates a strong cultural value system that has been traditionally inculcated; a tradition that reminds one and all that there should always be a dedicated time for change and transformation, for it is much needed to progress. 09
