MARCH 28, 2021 Page Two My brothers and sisters in Christ, Palms! We got ‘em. You get ‘em. Last year many assumed the pandemic prevented us from distributing palms, but the reality was somewhat different from what folks thought. We had a plan to distribute them safely over the days leading up to and after Easter. This was even mentioned a bit around the parish, but I’m glad that we didn’t publish that information widely, because COVID had a different plan. There was shortage of palms in our region because one or more ships delivering palms from South America were unable to make the journey. This year we placed our order and took the risk of mentioning it since Ash Wednesday: we’ll have palms! I’m writing this over a week before Palm Sunday because of the lead time needed for the bulletin around the Easter holiday. I have every confidence that you’re reading it with a palm you received at Mass, or with plans to get one in the coming days. But who knows? Perhaps the ship will be unable to deliver. There’s a chance for a freak ice storm to foul up delivery trucks again like last month. Maybe the palm crop failed this year! One point to draw from all of this is just how fragile our plans are in the face of natural and man-made circumstances we can’t control as individuals. Another lesson is our need to remain adaptable and patient, otherwise we face frustration which can even expose us toward sin like anger or despair. As always, we can learn to prioritize! After all, the tradition of “Palm Sunday” has always been intimately connected with the passion of our Lord, celebrated powerfully in the last two weeks of Lent. In some books I’ve even seen it named “Passion Sunday,” although the official name is “Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord.” We do not celebrate the Mass this year in the solemn form, raising palms in our hands. We may not have palms at all as an outward reminder. Yet nothing will stop us from raising our minds and hearts to our Lord as He arrives in Jerusalem for the events which will lead to His Passion! Our traditional symbols and practices may have to adapt, but our hearts remain ever centered on the truth of our Lord’s love, His mission, and His sacrifice. Have a blessed Holy Week! —Fr. Jerome A Journey through Lent – Today It Begins Jesus had been telling his Apostles for months now that he would have to go to Jerusalem and suffer and die at the hands of the Priests of his very own Jewish faith. Peter forbade it and Christ vehemently struck out at him with the words, “Get behind me Satan.” Christ was fulfilling the words of Zechariah, the mighty prophet of 500 years earlier who spoke of God’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem to the refrains of Hosanna -Hosanna. That Hebrew word translates to ‘O Lord, Grant Salvation’. The Jewish throngs in Jesus’ day were expectantly awaiting their savior from the brutal Roman overlords. On this day which we celebrate as Palm Sunday the people cut branches from the palm trees and also laid their own robes across the path of our Lord to dampen the dust that might arise from the hoofs of the donkey he sat upon. What honor they showed Him. What expectation they held for His coming. Here was their Savior humbly sitting on the back of an animal which had never been ridden before. This same throng of well wishers would cry ‘Crucify Him’ before the week was out. Well wishers turned into a mob of angry, shouting men and women. On that infamous ‘Palm Sunday’ as Christ entered the city an earthquake shook the very ground on which they stood. Did Jesus foresee what horror was bearing down on him? I can’t imagine that He didn’t know. Within a very few days Christ entered the temple to give honor to His Father, only to find it filled with vendors hawking everything from knick knacks to doves, sheep and such meant for sacrifice on the Altar. He drove the moneylenders out with a handmade whip and moved one step closer to his arrest by causing the priests hanger; those who were getting their cut from the monies being earned through the sale of such things. They were enraged that this itinerant preacher would dare disrupt their cash flow, their scheme to use God’s house as a profit center. From that moment on they planned on finding a cause to ‘get rid of Jesus’. There was worse to come. Holy Thursday is truly the beginning of the end, and the end of waiting for Heaven to be opened for all mankind. Christ, our Savior, is about to mount His throne by accepting His Cross. God Bless! —Deacon Alex Punchello

MARCH 28, 2021 Page Eight Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week and previews its themes and events. Today’s liturgy begins with the commemoration of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. The Roman Missal gives three options for how this can be done, the most elaborate of which begins with the priest, ministers, and the entire assembly outside. The Gospel account of the entry is read, after which palms are blessed and distributed. Then everyone enters the church in procession, singing songs or psalms. However, the joy is temporary; the Passion narrative recounts how, after an intimate meal with his disciples a few days later, Jesus is arrested, tortured, crucified, and buried. The reading from Isaiah is one of four Suffering Servant songs, while the psalm likewise gives voice to the suffering of the innocent. The reading from Philippians affirms the Incarnation as God’s embrace of the entire human situation, including suffering and death. SUFFERING . . . It may be Palm Sunday, but the Passion is far more prominent in today’s liturgy, which invites us to follow Jesus from his triumphant entrance into Jerusalem to his crucifixion and burial. It simply overflows with the sorrow and intimacy that will be dominant themes in Holy Week. The first reading from the book of Isaiah gives voice to the suffering of an innocent person— perhaps a prophet—or the people as a whole. The refrain for the Psalm is Jesus’ cry from the cross (Mark 13:14), a cry of absolute, existential loneliness. The great kenotic (emptying) hymn in Philippians provides a stunning portrait of Jesus’ ultimate emptying, simultaneously intimate and cosmological. … AND INTIMACY All four Gospels have a Passion narrative. While there is agreement on the main events—an intimate meal shared by Jesus and the disciples, betrayal by Judas, prayer in Gethsemane followed by Jesus’ arrest, trial, and crucifixion—each Gospel has unique variations that give it a particular meaning or tone. In today’s Gospel from Mark, Jesus is anointed by an unnamed woman in the house of Simon the leper. All the Gospels have Jesus being anointed by a woman, but only Mark puts this scene just before the Last Supper. Jesus says the anointing is preparation for his burial; it is as if the woman could see a prophet’s suffering in Jesus’ life and feel it in his presence. Moved by compassion, she empties her jar of expensive nard on his head, pouring out her love in a profoundly intimate act. Perhaps she will also join the women who witness the crucifixion from afar (Mark 15:40–41), after the Twelve seem to be long gone. Palm Sunday invites us to follow Jesus through the rest of Holy Week. By moving us to feel the injustice and the suffering endured by Jesus, this week’s liturgies and devotions present us with those same choices. Perhaps, like the unnamed woman, we can open ourselves to others’ suffering and respond with love and compassion. Or perhaps, like the Twelve, we will be conspicuous by our absence. Today’s Readings: Mk 11:1-–10 or Jn 12:12–16; Is 50:4–7; Ps 22:8–9, 17–18, 19–20, 23–24; Phil 2:6–11; Mk 14:1 — 15:47 [15:1–39]
