miart 2019
Hold everything dear*

Art casts a gaze on reality that is as much a form of attention itself as an
invitation to pay attention: by exploring not only the most extreme aspects of
life but also those of seemingly lesser importance, art transforms something
that is apparently insignificant into a powerful symbol of human existence.

Art’s gaze throws a beam of light on to things and, in so doing, generates
values that history, collectors and museums decide to guard in a gesture of
care.

By adopting the motto “hold everything dear”, miart 2019 invites its
audience to embrace this very same gesture of attention through which art
guards reality while transforming it.

Milan

The days from 5 to 7 April 2019 see the return of miart, the international fair of modern and
contemporary art organised by Fiera Milano and directed by Alessandro Rabottini, with the
support of Intesa Sanpaolo as main partner. Inside pavilion 3 of fieramilanocity, 185 galleries from
19 countries will be exhibiting works by modern masters, established and emerging contemporary
artists, and celebrated historical and experimental designers.

By confirming its seven sections, miart reaffirms its role as the Italian fair with the widest
chronological range of works, thus reflecting Milan’s intrinsic combination of history and
experimentation. The international dimension that in recent years has made Lombardy’s leading
city such an inclusive capital is expressed to perfection in miart’s characteristic dialogue between
past and present. In 2019, miart sets out to consolidate its growth by combining market
solidity with research, thus broadening its scope and becoming an observatory on society and
social changes.

miart 2019 is pleased to welcome some prestigious international galleries which, for the first
time, have chosen Milan as their window on Italy. These include Cabinet (London), Corvi-Mora
(London), Marian Goodman Gallery (New York – Paris – London), Hauser & Wirth (Hong Kong –
London – Los Angeles – New York – Somerset – St. Moritz – Gstdaad – Zurich), Herald St
(London), Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac (Paris – London – Salzburg) and Tucci Russo (Torre
Pellice).

Many influential galleries from across the globe are also reaffirming their ties with Milan by
returning from previous editions, including A Arte Invernizzi (Milan), Alfonso Artiaco (Naples),
Bortolami (New York), Isabella Bortolozzi (Berlin), Campoli Presti (London – Paris),
ChertLüdde (Berlin), Clearing (Brussels – New York – Brooklyn), Galleria Continua (San
Gimignano – Beijing – Les Moulins – Havana), Raffaella Cortese (Milan), Thomas Dane Gallery
(London – Naples), Massimo De Carlo (Milan – London – Hong Kong), Dvir Gallery (Brussels –
Tel Aviv), Kalfayan Galleries (Athens – Thessaloniki), Gladstone Gallery (New York – Brussels),
Kaufmann Repetto (Milan – New York), Peter Kilchmann (Zurich), Andrew Kreps Gallery (New
York), Lelong & Co (Paris – New York), Magazzino (Rome), Mai 36 (Zurich), Giò Marconi
(Milan), Massimo Minini (Brescia), P420 (Bologna), Gregor Podnar (Berlin), Lia Rumma (Milan –
Naples), Sprovieri (London) and Zero (Milan).

One of the mainstays of miart’s architecture is its central focus on the art of the last century,
and this is confirmed by a wide-ranging selection of galleries such as Cardi (Milan – London),
Casoli De Luca (Rome), Cortesi (Lugano – London – Milan), Galleria dello Scudo (Verona),
Mazzoleni (London – Turin), Montrasio Arte (Monza – Milan), Repetto Gallery (London),
Robilant + Voena (London – Milan – St. Moritz), Richard Saltoun (London), Gian Enzo Sperone
(Sent – New York), Studio Marconi (Milan), Tega (Milan) and Tornabuoni Arte (Florence– Milan
– Paris – London).

18 international museum directors and curators of prestigious institutions from 10 countries
will be awarding the Fondazione Fiera Milano acquisition fund and the 5 prizes that miart has
conceived for galleries and artists, now a testimony to the many years of collaboration between the
fair and its partners: the Fondazione Fiera Milano Acquisition Fund, the Herno Prize, the
Fidenza Village Prize for Generations, the On Demand Prize by Snaporazverein, the LCA
Prize for Emergent, and the Rotary Club Milano Brera Prize for Contemporary Art and Young
Artists.
A new series of miartalks will once again confirm the collaboration between miart and In
Between Art Film: three days of conversations open to the public involving forty artists,
curators, collectors, designers, museum directors and international thinkers, all coming
together around the theme of "The Common Good". Speakers will include collectots Nancy
Olnick and Giorgio Spanu; Jessica Morgan, Nathalie de Gunzburg Director, Dia
Foundation, Vivien Greene, Senior Curator, 19th- and Early 20th-Century Art, Guggenheim
Museum, Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of the Department of Architecture & Design, The
Museum of Modern Art, New York, Teresa Grandas, Curator, MACBA Barcelona, Francesco
Stocchi, Curator for Modern and Contemporary Art, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, and
author Alice Rawsthorn among the many others.

miart’s mission to inform is again expressed in miarteducational, the free guided tour service
made possible by the support of Fidenza Village and Value Retail.

As is now a tradition, miart will be the epicentre of Milan Art Week, a packed calendar of openings,
events and special exhibitions and projects organised by the leading public institutions and private
foundations in Milan, including (among others) Sheela Gowda and Giorgio Andreotta Calò at Pirelli
HangarBicocca, Lizzie Fitch / Ryan Trecartin at Fondazione Prada Milano, Anna Maria Maiolino
at the PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, Broken Nature. Design Takes on Human Survival
+ Design Museum at the Triennale, Lygia Pape at the Fondazione Carriero, Antonello da
Messina and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres at the Palazzo Reale, Renata Boero and Marinella

Massimiliano Gioni).

Underlining the richness and vitality of the programme lined up for miart, the art week will conclude
with a special opening of Milan's private galleries on Sunday 7 April.

MIARTALKS

Il bene comune
The Common Good

A new edition of the miartalks will mark the return of the collaboration between miart and In
Between Art Film, the company founded by Beatrice Bulgari in 2012 to foster the exchange
between the different artistic languages of our time through the production of artists’ films and
documentaries and the support to institutional projects devoted to the moving image.

During the 3 days in which miart will be open to the public, more than 40 international artists,
curators, collectors, designers, museum directors and thinkers will participate in panels and
conversations within the thematic framework: The Common Good.

We will explore the many meanings of this concept and its very nature: how we create “the
Common Good”, how to preserve it in its present and future manifestations.

Together with our speakers, we will survey these topics in connection with the 3 main fields of
interest at miart: contemporary art, modern art and design;

Friday 5th April: Commissioning, Producing and Collecting in the Context of Economic, Social,
and Climatic Changes.
Curated by Matteo Lucchetti, Chief Curator, Visible (citta dell’arte – Fondazione Pistoletto /
Fondazione Zegna)

Saturday 6th April: The Recent History of Italian Art as Collective Heritage and its Significance on
the International Stage.
Curated by Alberto Salvadori, Director, OAC Fondazione CR di Firenze, Florence and Curator of
the Established Masters and Decades sections

Sunday 7th April: Designing the Space and the Uses of the Common Good.
Curated by Hugo Macdonald, Design critic, Journalist and Curator of the Object section

HORIZION
5 – 7 April 2019

HORIZON is the new visual campaign to accompany miart 2019 until it officially opens to the
public on the 5th April 2019.

Following what is now a tradition at miart – a fair that for years has used a themed, multimedia-
based campaign in its communications – Horizon is a cinematographic style picture story
celebrating the theme of art as a place of exploration, discovery and change.

The main characters in this story are a group of teenagers cast in a natural environment and
depicted over the course of a summer’s day, from dawn to dusk. Like an imaginary film about the
spontaneity with which we face adult life, this campaign portrays adolescence as a time of
experimentation and fearlessness, suggesting a parallel with art as an open outlook
towards the possibilities of the future.

The medium within which the actions of the teenagers in Horizon take place is water, which
evokes the transition from one state to another as well as the dimensions of travel, traversing and
hybridization. An element to immerse oneself in and to emerge from, just as art enables us both to
probe psychological depth and also to contemplate the surfacing of original forms and new values.

Starting in October 2018, and continuing until miart opens to the public on 5 April 2019, Horizon
will occupy different platforms and make use of different media, involving the languages of
moving images and performing arts to reflect the many souls of miart : a fair in which history
and the present day are in dialogue and that, with works ranging from the early 20th century up to
the most recent artistic experimentation, aims to broaden its own chronological horizon of
reference.

MILAN ART WEEK 1-7 APRIL 2019

Milan, 22 January 2019 - Once again, the City Council of Milan|Culture and miart will be
supporting Milano Art Week with seven days of inaugurations, exhibitions and performances
around the entire city, involving institutions, foundations, and public and private entities in the
construction of a rich schedule of initiatives dedicated to modern and contemporary art.

A week of appointments that confirm Milan’s role as a city with a vibrant cultural scene and as an
international destination for art lovers. This year’s calendar is full of topical and urgent themes at a
global level: from female creativity to climate change, from the rediscovery of unexplored artistic
positions to the expansion of individual forms of identity, and thorough to new technology
scenarios.

Such a wealth of issues, many still being finalised, are a clear indication of how Milano Art Week
addresses a variety of target audiences visiting or living in Milan.
The final schedule will be announced closer to the time.

Meanwhile, a number of must-see contemporary art events have already been confirmed, starting
with the opening of “Renata Boero. Kromo-Kronos” at the Museo del Novecento, curated by Anna
Daneri and Iolanda Ratti. The show retraces the career of the Genoese artist, an active exponent of
the international art scene since the 1960s. Already on show at the Museo del Novecento, instead,
is the exhibition dedicated to Marinella Pirelli’s experimental cinema. Another interesting opening
involves “L’Ultima Cena dopo Leonardo” (The Last Supper after Leonardo) at the Fondazione
Stelline, for which Demetrio Paparoni has asked a number of leading artists to reinterpret the most
iconic painting of the Western world. Then there is the solo exhibition of the artist and performer
Anna Maria Maolino, “O Amor Se Faz Revolucionário”, at the PAC Padiglione d'Arte
Contemporanea, and the opening of the exhibition dedicated to the artist Sheela Gowda at the
HangarBicocca,
where the solo exhibition of Giorgio Andreotta Calò is already on show. Next is the focus on
Peruvian culture dedicated to Jorge Eduardo Eielson at the Mudec|Museo delle Culture, and the
imposing multimedia installation by Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin at the Fondazione Prada, in
which the two artists investigate the concept of “new” promised land. A series of events - including
shows on the work of Lygia Pape at the Foundation Carriero and of Sophia Al Maria at the
Fondazione Pomodoro, and “Il Soggetto Imprevisto. 1978 Arte e Femminismo in Italia” (The
unexpected Subject. 1978 Art and Feminism in Italy) at Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea - centre
on female creativity. Hans Josephsohn will be staged at ICA Milano, while the Fondazione Nicola
Trussardi will shortly be announcing a special new project.

For Milano Art Week, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli opens its doors to contemporary art with a feature
exhibition in which the artist Anj Smith embarks on a dialogue with the Museum’s masterpieces,
while Fondazione Pini Gabi Scardi will be staging an exhibition dedicated to Carlos Amorales.

Initiatives devoted to modern art, instead, include an important exhibition on Jean-Auguste-
Dominique Ingres at Milan’s Royal Palace, and a feature exhibition on Angelo Morbelli at the
GAM Galleria d’Arte Moderna. Even Malpensa airport has chosen to become a showcase for
twentieth century art, with the extraordinary exhibition, in Terminal 1, on Fausto Melotti’s I Sette
Savi (The Seven Wise Men), curated by Flavio Arensi and designed by Michele De Lucchi.
Also confirmed in 2019 is Art Night, involving the extraordinary opening of a number of non-
profit venues around the city on Saturday, 6th of April.
