MUSE photographer John alden Thirty-five years of working with light, in both film and digital capture. John has been a professional photographic artist for over 30 years. Those decades found him traveling through most of California and photographing hundreds of thousands of people, creating imagery and making friends. In the early 1990s he discovered Adobe and their flagship product, Photoshop, and started a relationship with a software program that continues to this day. Today, John incorporates his ideas into the expanding line of additional Adobe products: using them to manipulate pixels and create new and enhanced realities. He continues to work on understanding the relationship of light and dark and ultimately, content, and the impact it all has in a final, completed work. John continues his work as a photographer today, exploring new gear, expanded software, and options, as well as managing the daily business of Fresno Music Academy & Arts with his wife, Debi Ruud.
A note from the executive directors From the beginning of the Rogue Festival in 2002, the Rogue Muse has been selected to honor a visual artist from the Fresno community. For this, the eighteenth annual Rogue Festival, we decided to do something a little bit different. We’re still honoring an artist, but this year we wanted to honor the artist who conceived and created the Rogue Festival, Fresno playwright and director Marcel Nunis. It’s no exaggeration to say that the Rogue Festival is Marcel’s baby, and if it weren’t for Marcel, the Rogue Festival never would have been conceived. When the Rogue Festival was first planned and launched, in 2001–2002, Marcel had a remarkable vision: A noncurated, nonjuried theater festival that would impose no restrictions on artists. A theater festival that would pay 100 percent of its box office to performers. A theater festival where the audience would show up on time, dammit! So far, we’ve succeeded in meeting two of Marcel’s three goals. Building a great theater festival takes more than vision, though—it also takes planning, organization, and leadership. For the first few years of the Rogue’s existence, Marcel was the indispensable chieftain of our organization, welding a group of scruffy, independent artist-types into a vicious street gang of arts producers who work tirelessly to create a great experience for performers and audience. There are a lot of people to thank for making the 2019 Rogue Festival possible: our hard-working volunteers, our fantastic performers, the great Tower businesses who provide our performance spaces, our generous sponsors, and above all, you, the audience. But let us pause and give a special tip of the pith helmet to the man who made all of this possible—our founder, Marcel Nunis. Cheers! Amber and Vince
