Brianna Delaporte and Erin Molloy Festival Directors ‘Kaya' Welcome from the Wadandi people, the traditional Cultural custodians of South West, Western Australia. Kaya Nala Maat Kaya Noonduk (Hello, our family welcomes you) to Wadandi Boodja (Saltwater People’s Country). Whist on Wadandi Boodja (country) we ask that you respect the area and walk softly, while taking the time to listen to the Boodja (Country) as she Wongi Birak (talks of the season). We’re now in Mukuru, the coldest and wettest time of year. It’s a time for nesting, and for the use of fire (karla). Karla is at the very heart of our culture, for the Aboriginal people, karla is of great significance, It’s a centrepiece for family and gatherings but also a daily necessity, for cooking, warmth and light. Sitting round the crackling Karla is not only a good feeling, it helps people relax and become more receptive to conversation and information, which builds stronger bonds with one another, healing our spirituality. Enjoy the warmth that Karla brings while on Wadandi Boodja.
