JUNE 13, 2021 From the Little Seed to the Large Tree Children are great for asking questions. They ask one question and, having received an answer, they ask another. As children grow into adolescence, they begin to ask more curious questions, questions that look for some kind of light to be cast on the deeper issues of life. In time, they may come to realize that clear answers are not always to be found to life’s more profound questions. As adults, we often have to reconcile ourselves to living with many unanswered questions. We discover that all our searching will never exhaust the many mysteries of life. We continue to take delight in making fresh discoveries, but we also realize that coming to terms with ‘not knowing’ is an important part of life’s journey. This Sunday Jesus speaks two parables which acknowledge the mystery that is at the heart of the most everyday experiences of life. A farmer scatters seed on the good soil of Galilee. In the first parable, Jesus offers his listeners in this week’s Gospel, a gardener scatters seed on the ground, and goes off to sleep. The seeds take care for themselves, and when the grain is ripe, the gardener harvests it. In the second parable, someone sows a tiny mustard seed in the ground, and it grows into a huge bush, large enough to offer birds shelter in its branches. Both of these parables are counter-cultural to the point of sounding absurd. They make no sense. What is the kingdom of God like? The kingdom of God is like a sleeping gardener, mysterious soil, an invasive weed, and a flock of birds. Let us first look at the sleeping gardener. Good gardeners don’t throw seeds into their backyards. They keep an eye on the weather. They protect their gardens from birds, squirrels, rabbits, and other animals. From early spring until harvest time, they water, they fertilize, and they prune and weed. But the gardener in Jesus’ parable sleeps. He doesn’t micro- manage. Instead, he enjoys the rest that comes from leaning into a process that is mysterious and assured. He trusts the seeds. He trusts the soil. He trusts the sun, the shade, the clouds, and the rain. He participates in the process by planting and harvesting. He pays attention to the seasons, and gets to work when the time is ready. But the gardener does not have the illusion that he is in charge, that he is in control. God’s grace is in charge, God’s grace is in control. According to Jesus’s parable, the kingdom of God is both fruitful and hidden, both generous and mysterious. Yes, the soil eventually brings forth abundance, but in the process of that bringing forth, all the details we long to see and master are hidden from our eyes. There are many areas in our life where we struggle to trust the soil. Where we "plant" our prayers, but then refuse to let them rest and germinate in God's care. We might call this caution, but in Jesus's gardening example, it is faithlessness. It's a useless attempt to play God. In Jesus’s second parable, a sower sows a mustard seed in the ground. In Jesus’s day people didn't plant mustard seeds. Mustard was a weed, and a toxic, stubborn weed at that. So what is Jesus saying when he describes the holy as a tiny, insignificant mustard seed? What does it mean to take an invasive weed, a plant we would sooner remove than sow, and make it the very heart, the very center, of God’s kingdom? Jesus himself comes to earth as a tiny and forgettable “mustard seed.” The people who first follow him when he grows up are a bunch of fishermen and corrupt tax collectors. The second parable in the Gospel reminds us that God can be at work in situations and places that seem very un- promising to us. Insignificant beginnings can lead to a wonderful result. The kingdom of God is like that; it often finds ex- pression initially in what is small and seemingly insignificant. We can feel that our own faith is insignificant, as small as a mustard seed. Jesus assures us that the Spirit is working in and through such faith. Our hope can appear to diminish to the size of a mustard seed. The parable says that such hope is enough for the Lord to work with. Our various efforts can seem to bear very insignificant results. The parable assures us that God will see to it that the final harvest from those efforts will be abundant. Sometimes we have to learn to be content with the small seeds that we can sow, trusting them to bear fruit in ways that will surprise us. The kingdom of God is something very humble and modest in its origins. We need to learn to appreciate little things and small gestures. There are little seeds of the kingdom that all of us can sow: a friendly gesture to- wards someone in trouble, a welcoming smile for someone who is alone, a sign of closeness for someone who is in despair, a little ray of joy for a heart full of distress. God’s reign comes in power through the seemingly insignificant actions of each one of us. Let us pray – Father, we thank you for choosing us and using us for your glory. We rest in knowing that our life is in your hands. We choose to trust, we choose to believe knowing that all thigs are possible with you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Stay safe and healthy! I love you and I miss you! Fr. Q, OMI PARISH WEBSITE: WWW.STWILLIAMPARISH.ORG 4
