General Notices Our Mass of Gratitude for the Sisters Was Filled with Love Did you hear it? Did you feel it? The joy of shared love and appreciation was so strongly palpable I’m sure it was sensed throughout Kingsville and beyond. There is so much to be thankful for but above all we are thankful for all of you. You came with your signs, your chairs, and an outpouring of love and gratitude for our Sisters that energized the afternoon and kept the rain away! Sr. Helen Jacobson, the Archivist for the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia and a guest at the Mass, expresses beautifully what the celebration meant to them “Peace and all good! I am composing this note of thanks in the presence of my beautiful red rose and baby’s breath currently standing tall in a bud vase on my desk. There are not enough superlative adjectives to describe how touched I was yesterday by the outpouring of love and appreciation for our sisters as they prepare to move from the parish campus. Your investment of so much time, effort, care, and thoughtful attention to the smallest detail was so obvious and so heartwarming. From our welcome upon arrival, the decorated golf cart transport, the liturgy and gift presentations, the appetizers, dinner, and dessert —you took such good care of us guests as well as the current convent residents. I remarked to several people yesterday that it saddens me to know of so many occasions where our sisters have served for many decades at a parish and there has been no recognition and/or appreciation of their years of service. You all, on the other hand, have literally outdone yourselves. I am so looking forward to seeing the Memory Book that will be forthcoming. With deepest thanks and wishes of abundant blessings for you and the parishioners at St. Stephen’s! Sr. Helen We prayed at mass that the road between us would never be far.” The Sisters look forward to remaining in contact with each of you. You can stay in touch using their new address: 2235 W. Joppa Rd. Lutherville, MD 21093 6/6 Celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi & The Year of the Eucharist! See information in this newsletter and weekly flocknotes and social media posts! The Archdiocese wants to hear from you and your encounters with the Living God in the Eucharist! Share how the Eucharist has touched your life at https://www.archbalt.org/year-of-the-eucharist/submissions-for-year-of-the-eucharist/ 6/20 Father’s Day Blessings! We give special thanks to Fathers, Grand- and Great-Grand-Fathers, God Fathers, and all those who give fatherly support to us. Please also include a special prayer of thanksgiving for our Priests, Brothers, and Deacons serving around the world and right here at St. Stephen! Honor St. Joseph on Father’s Day: We invite you to join us in offering a spiritual bouquet to St. Joseph for Father’s Day. We invite you to comment with prayer intentions you’d like to be entrusted to St. Joseph’s intercession. We also encourage you to participate from home with these simple suggestions: https://www.usccb.org/resources/fathers-day-action-guide-home-activity.pdf As we celebrate the gift of fathers and honor St. Joseph, we also recognize that Father’s Day can be a difficult holiday for many. We hope this spiritual bouquet provides an opportunity to pray for the intentions brought to your heart by the occasion. FEMA COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Program - On March 24, FEMA released the interim policy guidance on the COVID-19 Funeral Assistance program. We are very grateful to the Almighty God that everything is good. A few updates: 1. Schools here in Kenya have reopened after a long holiday to allow Standard Eight and Form Four candidates do their national examinations. 2. In honour of St. Joseph Year of Jubilee, the Archdiocese of Mombasa during the annual Pilgrimage in Our Lady of Good Hope, Bura Parish in Taita Taveta Deanary in February, The statute of St. Joseph was unveiled and communicated, that over the year each Parish will have the statute delivered for few days so that our Christians can do prayers and devotions to Our Spiritual Father St. Joseph. For Bomu we will receive the statute on June 22, 2021 and handover it to our neighbouring parish on 26.06.2021. 3. Due to the guidelines given by the government through the ministry of health, our Small Christian Communities meet at the church every Sunday for their prayers as from 3:00PM. 4. On the feast of St. Joseph the worker which was celebrated on 1.05.2021, our senior youth Don Bosco undertook works of mercy by visiting the Association of Physically Disabled of Kenya facility in Port Reitz here in Mombasa. Fr. Kizito Ssendegeya celebrated Mass there with the children and staff members. Our youth also presented food stuff and snacks to the children as well. (see photos, Fr. Kizito in Light blue shirt)
More General Notices From our Parish Service & Social Justice Committee: June 20 is World Refugee Day: It is a core Catholic teaching that every human being is created in the image of God and is therefore entitled to dignity and respect. The Catholic Church views assisting those in need as a fundamental Christian duty that is derived directly from the life of mercy of Christ, who himself was a migrant and a child of refugees. We, as Christians, are called to welcome our new neighbors with the same love and compassion we would want ourselves to be shown in a time of persecution. We are also called to provide support and care for refugees overseas who remain in tenuous situations. (from USCCB). Prayer for Refugees: God of our Wandering Ancestors, Long have we known That your heart is with the refugee: That you were born into time In a family of refugees Fleeing violence in their homeland, Who then gathered up their hungry child And fled into alien country. Their cry, your cry, resounds through the ages: “Will you let me in?” Give us hearts that break open When our brothers and sisters turn to us with that same cry. Then surely all these things will follow: Ears will no longer turn deaf to their voices. Eyes will see a moment for grace instead of a threat. Tongues will not be silenced but will instead advocate. And hands will reach out—working for peace in their homeland, working for justice in the lands where they seek safe haven. Lord, protect all refugees in their travels. May they find a friend in me And so make me worthy Of the refuge I have found in you. AMEN (from Catholic Relief Services) June 25 is the International Day for Seafarers: Have you ever stopped to reflect upon the ease with which we have access to our favorite morning coffee from Brazil, grapes from Chile, or wheat from Turkey? What about our prescription medicine produced in Germany or the gasoline that fuels our cars made with crude oil from Saudi Arabia? 90% of global trade is moved by the sea and it is our fellow seafarers who work tirelessly to transport this cargo to and from the world’s 6,000 ports, including the 360 seaports that line our U.S. coasts. Stella Maris, founded by the Catholic Church, is the largest global maritime ministry serving seafarers, fishers, and family members in the world. In the U.S. Stella Maris is present in 53 maritime ports in 26 states and in 48 dioceses. Port chaplains and lay volunteers minister to seafarers by offering pastoral care, friendship, transportation to purchase basic needs, Internet connection/phone cards to communicate with family members, and more. In addition to offering welcome on ship visits, Stella Maris staff assists seafarers in distress, whether due to exploitative working conditions or long periods of isolation on board the vessel. Stella Maris Prayer: O Mary, Star of the Sea, Light of every ocean, guide seafarers across all dark and stormy seas that they may reach the haven of peace and light prepared in Him who calmed the sea. As we set forth upon the oceans of the world and cross the deserts of our time, show us, O Mary, the fruit of your womb, for without your Son we are lost. Pray that we will never fail on life’s journey, that in heart and mind, in word and deed, in days of turmoil and in days of calm, we will always look to Christ and say, “Who is this that even wind and sea obey him?” Our Lady Star of the Sea Pray for us. Amen (Pope John Paul II) Join us for this month’s service project: Shoeboxes for Sailors! See details in the Service Opportunities section! Want to learn more about Service & Social Justice efforts?
