Parish of the Three Patrons THE MOST HOLY TRINITY - YEAR B - 30th MAY 2021 Parish Clergy Fr Michael McCaughey PP – 028 71262360 – stpatricks@threepatrons.org Fr Gerard Mongan CC – 028 71351261 – stbrigids@threepatrons.org Fr Chris Ferguson (Priest in Residence) – 028 71351261 – stbrigids@threepatrons.org Franciscan Friars of the Renewal - 028 71419980 - facebook: derryfranciscans www.threepatrons.org threepatronsfacebook I Am With You Today's Gospel is often referred to as the 'Great Commission'. It contains the instructions of the Risen Jesus to the disciples to spread the Good News to the ends of the earth, to teach and to baptise 'in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit'. As we celebrate Trinity Sunday today, we pay attention in particular to the very last words of Matthew's Gospel: 'And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.' Jesus will be with his followers through the gift of the Holy Spirit, God's presence with us. We read that some of the disciples were hesitant when they encountered Jesus on the mountain. They had lost him to death, and now he was risen and with them again in the flesh. They may have felt they weren't ready or able for the task he was handing over to them. These first disciples were an imperfect group of people, yet Jesus chose them to spread God's vision of love, compassion and justice throughout the world. Perhaps, like some of the disciples, we are fearful or doubtful. At a time when everything is changing so rapidly, it can be difficult to navigate our own faith journey, never mind communicate it to others. Yet we have Jesus' assurance that he is with us, with the love and strength we need. The Holy Spirit is at work, inspiring and guiding us, shaping our lives, helping us to make the love of God present to all we meet. Today, may each of us be open to experiencing the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives. May we be renewed and refreshed with the power of the risen Lord so that in the words of Pope Francis ‘we may, go out again and again without hesitation, without fear to proclaim the joy of the good news which is for all people. ______________________________________________________________________________ Please remember in your prayers the boys and girls who will receive the sacrament of Confirmation in our parish in the coming weeks. May: the Month of Mary Pope Francis has encouraged families and communities around the world to dedicate the Marian month of Mary to reciting the Rosary for an end to the pandemic. Each day will see Vatican News broadcast the recitation of the Rosary at 6 pm Rome time from various shrines. As a parish community, the Rosary is prayed after 9 am Mass each weekday in St Brigid’s Church, Carnhill and after 10 am Mass in St Patrick’s Church, Pennyburn. In the month of May please join us in church via the webcam each day. Why not set aside some time each day as a family in your home to pray the Rosary or a decade of the Rosary for an end to the pandemic? O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus' pain, keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Irish People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen. Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. (Pope Francis) _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Monthly Mass in honour of St Pio will be celebrated on Monday 8th June at 7.00 pm in St Patrick’s, Pennyburn. We ask God’s blessing on all through the intercession of St Pio. PRAYER TO ST PIO O Glorious St Pio, patron of those who are in need of healing, I call upon you and seek your help. Please intercede for all those who are in need of spiritual, emotional or physical healing. Obtain for them comfort during their sufferings, strength when they feel weary, hope when they feel discouraged and joy when they are down-hearted. Help them know the peace of Jesus and the certainty of His victory in their suffering, through Christ, our Lord, Amen. _______________________________________________________________ Matt Talbot Prayer Society St Eugene’s Cathedral launched the Matt Talbot Prayer Society to pray for people suffering from, recovering from or affected by any form of addiction. “Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you.” How are you being called to glorify the Lord in response to His love? Could God be inviting you to the priesthood or consecrated life? Speak to your local priest, call your Diocesan Vocations Director (visit derryvocations.org) or email the National Vocations Office: info@vocations.ie. A Prayer for Vocations based on the words of Pope Francis LORD of the Harvest, BLESS young people with the gift of courage to respond to your call. Open their hearts to great ideals to great things. INSPIRE all of your disciples to mutual love and giving - for vocations blossom in the good soil of faithful people. INSTILL those in religious life, parish ministries and families with the confidence and grace to invite others to embrace the bold and noble path of life consecrated to you. UNITE us to Jesus through prayer and sacrament, so that we may co-operate with you in building your reign of mercy and truth, of justice and peace. Amen. Adapted from Pope Francis’ Message on the 51st World Day of Prayer for Vocations _ ____________________________________________ Celebrating Mary in the Month of May May is a very special month for the Church as we remember Mary, the Mother of Jesus and our Mother. A full month is given over to Mary and during this month we are encouraged to honour Mary in different ways. To help parishes, families and schools to do this, the Diocesan Catechetical Centre has created a number of resources including prayers, Gospel reflections, colouring and craft activities, examples of May Altars and ideas on how to pray the Rosary. These resources are available online at catecheticalcentre.org/category/celebrating-mary-in-the- month-of-may-2021/ Invitation to respond - Diocese of Derry Environmental Strategy The Diocese of Derry has launched a consultative plan about climate change and the environment and is inviting everyone within the diocese to read, engage and respond to it. The plan identifies actions and behaviours that support rather than destroy the environment. The suggestions cover such areas as land, buildings, energy, food, travel and waste. A draft of the Environmental Strategy has been posted on the Derry Diocesan website, to view and/or download: https://www.derrydiocese.org/diocese/environmental- strategy. Every attempt has been made to make the strategy both comprehensive and practical so as to suit each parish's particular situation. In order to ensure that it is as helpful as possible to your various parish communities however, we would appreciate any constructive feedback on it that you may have to give. We ask if you could: - Read the draft strategy document and give feedback on aspects that you feel could be supplemented / improved - Begin to implement any aspect(s) of it that you feel can be put into practice quickly and easily - Draw the attention of both parish groups and individual parishioners to the strategy and encourage them to give feedback. (This would be especially relevant to schools and any groups / individuals with particular interest in environmental issues). Relational Beings Six years ago , Pope Francis issued his encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si: On Care for Our Common Home. In it, he calls for action to halt the destruction of the planet, arguing that preserving our national environment should be an essential part of the Church’s mission. The word ‘creation’ has a broader meaning than just nature or our world; it has to do with God’s loving plan in which the earth itself and every creature has value. But why are we talking about the environment on this, the feast of the Most Holy Trinity? Well, in Laduato Si, Pope Francis tells us that the Trinity is embedded in all of creation. Just as God is a communion, everyone of God’s creatures is relational, and the world a web of relationships. ‘The Trinity has left its mark on all creation,’ says Pope Francis. The implication of this is that we are all connected, we all share a common home, and we have a duty to protect and care for all that belongs to God. We need to become more aware of how our lifestyles affect both the earth and others, particularly those on the margins of society, and to consider also whether our actions are fair to future generations. Let us pray today, with Pope Francis: ‘Triune Lord, wondrous community of infinite love, teach us to contemplate you in the beauty of the universe, for all things speak of you.’ Triona Doherty
