Archbishop Gomez: CA confession bill amendment is still 'unacceptable violation of our religious freedoms’ Archbishop Jose Gomez’s statement on Amendments to California “Confession Bill” I have been studying the amendments made to SB 360 by the Senate Appropriations Committee last week. I am grateful that Senators heard the voice of the Catholic people — who understand that confession is a sacred space, an intimate dialogue between the believer and the living God. We know that no government, for whatever reason, should violate the privacy and confidentiality of that sacred conversation. And while I appreciate that the committee accepted several of the Church’s recommendations to strengthen mandated reporting requirements for clergy, as amended SB 360 still denies the sanctity of confession to every priest in the state and to thousands of Catholics who work with priests in parishes and other Church agencies and ministries. Even as amended, SB 360 remains an unacceptable violation of our religious freedoms that will do nothing to protect children. As a Catholic community, let us continue to work with lawmakers for a bill that truly advances our shared goals of fighting the scourge of child sexual abuse in our society. Tell your State Legislator to vote “NO” on SB 360; here is the link https://cqrcengage.com/cacatholic/app/write-a-letter? 0&engagementId=498306 . Do it today, a crucial vote is expected soon. Our Heavenly Home This weekend we celebrate the Ascension of Christ. We could describe the Ascension as the Lord’s “homecoming.” After he had finished all that he came on earth to do (as far as his visible presence was concerned), forty days after he rose from the dead, Jesus ascended into heaven. He went home. Heaven is intended to be our home as well. It’s what we are created for. In the gospel of John (14:2-3), Jesus tells his followers he is going to prepare a place for them. And since heaven is to be our home, it follows that we need a sense of belonging there. We need to feel “at home” with the things of heaven. Here are a few ways we can cultivate this awareness: The Eucharist is the closest thing we have to “heaven on earth”: the Lord is really present in the Eucharist; and when we worship him here, we join the angels and saints in their praise of him. Regular participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Mass, and possibly weekday Mass or time in the presence of the Eucharist, is one way to help ourselves feel “at home” with the things of heaven. Heaven is the dwelling place of Christ, so another necessary way to make sure we will be “at home” in heaven is to recognize and honor Christ in everyone we meet. Knowing the teachings of the Lord, as we receive them in the Scriptures and the teaching of the Church, also helps us become familiar with our heavenly destiny. That is why our parish has so many opportunities for Scripture study and faith formation for people of all ages. A final necessary way to know we will be “at home” in heaven is by living a life characterized by prayer. If we are going to spend eternity with God, the angels and the saints, it’s a good idea to start speaking with them now. Whatever form it takes, daily conversation with our heavenly friends is a “no brainer” if we hope to share their home one day. May the Ascension of Our Lord inspire us to send our minds and hearts to our eternal destiny, where we hope to be at home with Christ when our earthly pilgrimage comes to an end. SCOTT HAHN RETURNS TO CHRIST CATHEDRAL JUNE 5 The next installment of the Bishop’s Lecture Series will feature noted author Scott Hahn, who will be discussing his new book The First Society: The Sacrament of Matrimony and the Restoration of the Social Order. In The First Society: The Sacrament of Matrimony and the Restoration of the Social Order, Hahn makes the startling claim that our society’s ills and its cures are rooted in whether we reject or accept the divine graces made available through the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Join Hahn on Wednesday, June 5 at the Christ Cathedral Campus for an evening of theological insight! The event will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception, followed at 7 p.m. by a panel discussion and a book signing at 8:30 p.m. 68K27J The Ascension of the Lord Page 12
