Summer Resident Camp Information Packet - Summer 2021
Welcome!
After a long COVID hiatus, we are back to show that we Camp
Stop...Won’t Stop having fun at Girl Scout Camp! This packet is
filled with information to help prepare your family for camp and make
your camper’s experience safe, fun, and fulfilling! Camp is a special
place, full of opportunities for growth and personal development. Staff
are waiting at camp to provide an excellent experience and share a
great love for the outdoor world with your girl!

Fundamental to the camp program are the values inherent in the Girl
Scout Promise and Law. Our program is girl-centered and intentional.
Our ultimate goal is to make the camp experience an integral part of
each girl’s life. We emphasize opportunities for the camper to value
herself, further develop her skills, build relationships, participate in the camp community,
appreciate the natural world, and have fun in a safe, healthy environment. If you are interested in
some tips about how to help your camper have a successful time at camp, check out the CAMPS
section on our website at www.nccoastalpines.org.

Even if you have been to one of our camps before, please read this thoroughly, as MANY
things have changed. If you have any questions that are not answered here, please do not
hesitate to contact the Camp Director of the camp your daughter is attending.

We’re all proud to be building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a
better place!

COVID Precautions at Camp
Health & Safety of campers and staff is the top priority for us at summer camp. In 2021, this means that many
things will need to be done differently in order to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID during our camp
season. At camp we already have procedures in place to help prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
Now we are doing more, and we need your help and cooperation to keep camp going this summer. Keep
reading to find out what you can expect, and what you can do to be part of the effort!
NOTE: All COVID protocols are subject to change based on guidance from the CDC, NC DHHS, and ACA.

During the two weeks (14 days) prior to your arrival at camp this summer, please be mindful of your activities and
interactions with others. In order to reduce the likelihood that you carry COVID with you to camp, please
consider:
• Practicing physical distancing when with ANYONE outside your immediate family
• Wearing a face covering when entering public places, riding in vehicles with people outside your immediate
family, and doing any activities during which you cannot maintain a 6-foot distance
• Limiting travel outside of your community, county, or metropolitan area (Note: Traveling internationally in the
14 days prior to camp prohibits you from attending camp.)
• Monitoring your own physical health and symptoms; tracking and treating as necessary
• Not attending large events where physical and social distancing are not practiced
• Getting the complete COVID vaccine if you are age 16 or older (NOT required)

Here is what to expect for 2021 camp check-in days:
• You will be assigned a specific check-in window of time, based on your girl’s unit. If you have more than
one girl, please arrive at the latest assigned check-in window, so all of your girls may immediately join
their assigned groups after check-in is complete.
• Try to limit the number of people who accompany your girl(s) to camp for check-in to one adult if possible.
Consider joining us at a single-day event to enjoy camp fun for the whole family!
• Upon arrival, before exiting your vehicle, you will be screened for COVID-related symptoms. Anyone with
a fever of 100 or higher, blood oxygen level under 95%, or exhibiting other COVID symptoms will not be
permitted to remain at camp. NOTE: COVID Tests will not be required to attend camp.
• All luggage will be dropped in a central location near the parking lot and later transported to the units
where girls will unpack and setup their sleeping quarters. Families and friends will not visit the cabins on
check-in day, to reduce the number of people in and out of those spaces.

All campers and staff members will be required to:
• Stay with their unit group for all activities, meals, etc.
• Wear a cloth face covering during all activities, indoor and outdoor, with the exception of eating, sleeping,
bathing, aquatics, and climbing the alpine tower. Mask breaks will be taken at regular intervals and only
when girls and staff can be at appropriate physical distance for the duration.
• Sleep in the direction indicated on each bed (head/toe). Beds have been arranged and labeled according
to best practice guidance from the American Camp Association and the CDC.
• Wash and/or sanitize their hands between activities, before and after meals, after using the bathroom, and
after all other instances in which disease transmission is possible. Practice excellent personal hygiene.
• Have their temperature and oxygen level taken each morning and report any feelings of sickness to the
       Health Supervisor.
                                                            3

while you are traveling with your camper.

                    • Final payment for all camp sessions is due by May 1.

council shops, in person, online, or on the phone. Contact the Customer Care Team for
questions and to make payments at 800-284-4475 or helpdesk@nccoastalpines.org.

Here are some useful tips to help prepare you and your child for camp.
    • Prepare your camper to care for herself by having her spend a weekend with a friend or relative.
    • If this is your camper’s first time away from home, speak openly about homesickness. Homesickness is
natural. With your camper, create a plan for what she will do if she
becomes homesick at camp. Some ideas may be to write a letter
home, tell a counselor, or try to be a friend to someone else that may
be feeling homesick, too. Avoid “pick-up deals” - telling your camper
that if she feels homesick, all she has to do is call you and you will
come pick her up. This tells your camper that you do not think that she
is strong enough to handle homesickness on her own and undermines
the counselors’ efforts to help your camper become comfortable at
         camp.
    • As a parent, emphasize your camper is “going” to camp rather than
         you are “sending” her.
    • Write letters or e-mails to your child while she is at camp. Mail some
before she leaves or bring letters to check-in.
    • If you have concerns or if there is something we should know (a
recent move, serious illness, death, divorce, etc.) please contact the Camp Director directly.
    • Especially if this is your girl’s first time away, practice independent personal hygiene at home. Camp only
has showers, so make sure your girl experiences a shower (instead a bath) before attending camp.
    • Your girl should be comfortable wearing a face covering for long periods of time.
    • Check out http://www.acacamps.org/campers-families/planning-camp for additional resources and ideas.

• Check-in is on the first day of the session from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. New this year: you will be assigned a
specific check-in window based on your girl’s unit. This information will be sent to you two weeks prior to
check-in. This will help maintain appropriate physical distance between groups of girls.
• Check-out is on the last day of the session from 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
• Gates will not open until 2:00pm on both Check-in and Check-out days. Please plan to arrive as close to
your assigned time as possible as limited space is available for waiting cars. Please bring your
medications with you upon arrival to check-in.
• If you have a conflict with these times, please contact the Camp Director as soon as possible. This will
allow us to make arrangements to allow your camper’s transition to and from camp life to be as smooth as
        possible.
• The person picking up your camper will be required to show a photo ID and be listed as an authorized
pick-up person on your camper's paperwork. Please see the Summer Camp Forms Packet.
• Please remember all check-in/out procedures differ at each of our locations due to their layout and
staffing, so please respect each camp’s procedures. Pack your camper’s bedding, swim suit, towel, and
water bottle in a separate bag for check in to assist your campers transition into camp. You will need to
park in the areas designated by the Camp Ranger and luggage will either be transported for you or
        wagons will be provided.

Packing for Camp
To Bring or Not to Bring?

it’s not fair to the camper who will be very active at camp.

Girl Scout Camp Gear
Trading Post (AKA the Camp Store)
During their week at camp, campers will have the opportunity to visit
the Trading Post. The store sells camp essentials like water bottles,
flashlights, and swim goggles; and also sells fun items like t-shirts,
sunglasses, cameras, postcards, and other Girl Scout themed items.
Merchandise ranges from $1- $25. Camp T-shirts are not included in
the camp fee and available in the Trading Post while supplies last.

When you check-in your camper, you'll have the opportunity to shop
in the Trading Post shop. While in the Trading Post, you can buy a
preloaded $10, $20 or $30 gift card for your camper. All gift cards for
use during camp are collected during check-in and held for safe-
keeping until your camper visits the Trading Post. Gift cards with
balances will be returned to the camper during check-out. Any
remaining balances can be used at the council shops, for council
sponsored events, or donated to the council.

 Council Retail Shops
To help you prepare, the Council Shops have many items your camper may need for summer camp. We'd
love to see you in any of our council shops located in the Raleigh, Fayetteville, Goldsboro, and Wilmington
Service Centers. You can also purchase these items by visiting our online council shop at girlscoutshop.com.

Communications at Camp
Telephone and Electronics Policy
Cell phones and other communication devices are not permitted at camp. Having these devices at camp can
create a lot of homesickness and issues in the units amongst girls. Camp is an opportunity for girls to be
unplugged and become an active member of our camp community. Additionally, the environments at camp
are not suitable for the safe storage of these devices.
• Campers are not permitted to receive or make phone calls while at camp.
• If there is a problem or if your camper is not adjusting well, a Camp Administrator will contact you.
• We know not speaking with your camper can be very hard. If you have any special circumstances, please
call camp at least a week before your camper attends so you and the Camp Director can make plans on
    how to manage it.

Camper Mail
All campers love mail! We recommend sending mail early or dropping it off at check-in so your camper
receives a letter in the first few days. If you think your camper might be homesick, help encourage her to have
fun at camp by keeping your letters positive and happy! You are welcome to send your camper a care
package but DO NOT send food, candy, or gum. If campers would like to send letters home while they are
at camp we suggest you send her with pre-stamped and addressed stationary.
Email is another easy way to contact your camper. Please put your camper’s name and program name in the
subject line. These messages will be printed once a day and then given to your camper’s counselor for
distribution. As campers do not have access to computers, they will not be able to respond to emails. Please
do not send pictures or images that require a lot of ink to print.

What to Expect
Cabin/Tent Life
Unit assignments are created based on the specific program that a summer camper is registered for. Our
Camp Hardee campers reside in climate controlled cabins, while our campers at Camp Graham and Camp
Mary Atkinson reside in either platform tents or cabins. Cabins at Camp Mary Atkinson and Camp Graham
have ceiling fans, but there is no electricity in the tents. Many campers bring battery operated fans and
lanterns with extra batteries. The Owl Hollow unit at Camp Mary Atkinson is climate controlled.

Camp Food
Our menu offers a variety of different, delicious, well balanced meals. Vegetarian options are available by
request, and we will gladly work to accommodate campers with food allergies. To reduce large gatherings,
we may have staggered meal times, multiple dining locations, and in-unit meals. Some meals are cooked
over campfires under summer staff supervision or will be bag lunches. Contact the Camp Director to
discuss specific dietary needs at least two weeks prior to your camper’s session.

                                   Lost and Found
Despite our best efforts and intentions, many items can and will be left
behind every week. Please label all of your camper’s items with their
first and last name. If you return home and realize something is
missing, contact us and we will do our best to return it to you. Items that
have been clearly labeled with first and last names have a much better
chance of being returned to their owner. Items not claimed by the end
of August will be donated to a local charity or used by the camp.
Health & Wellness
During resident camp, there is a dedicated healthcare staff on site at all times. They will be responsible for
distributing all campers’ prescribed medication throughout the week. For any minor issue that may arise, the
on-site health center is open 24 hours. For issues beyond the scope of our health center, we will notify the
parent/guardian immediately to discuss their desired course of action. If a camper is ill for longer than 6 hours
with no indication of getting better, the parent/guardian will be notified and the camper will be sent home.
Campers sent home for medical reasons do not warrant a refund of fees, but we will work to see if we can
accommodate them in another session. If your camper has any known medical conditions, please be sure to
note them on the medical form. The more we know, the better we can serve your camper. We try to
accommodate as best we can, but may not be able to serve every girl due to certain health concerns and
medical diagnoses.

COVID Precautions & Screening
We are thrilled to be hostng in-person camp again in summer 2021. In order to continue offering this program,
we need everyone’s help and cooperation in reducing the spread of COVID and keeping it out of our camp
environments. For the two weeks leading up to a girl’s attendance at camp, we ask that she and her family
practice appropriate physical distancing, mask-wearing, and follow guidance from the North Carolina
Department of Health on COVID safety as much as possible.

Upon arrival at camp, each girl will be screened for symptoms and will have her temperature checked. Girls
with fevers and/or COVID symptoms will not be permitted to stay at camp. Temperature checks will
performed each morning when girls are on property. Girls showing symptoms will be isolated per the North
Carolina DHHS guidelines and parents will be informed immediately.

Per NC DHHS guidelines for resident camps, all campers and staff will be required to wear cloth face
coverings while at camp. This includes during indoor and outdoor activities, except for while eating, sleeping,
and participating in aquatic & climbing activities. Physically distant mask breaks will be taken as needed.

Camp staff are now included in the CDC’s list of Essential Workers and our staff are encouraged to be
vaccinated prior to the start of the summer season.

Information for Campers
Waterfront/Swim Evaluation
On check-in day, all campers will head to the lake or pool to participate in a swim evaluation. Campers will be
placed into ability groups for safety reasons. These groups determine the depth of the water that the campers
can swim in the lake or pool. ALL campers will get to play in the lake/river or pool and be able to participate in
canoeing. The swim evaluation consists of swimming approximately 25 yards and treading water for 2
minutes. Campers do not have to participate in the swim evaluation; if a camper chooses not to participate in
the swim evaluation, they will be classified as a Level 1 swimmer.
•Level 1 — Little to no swimming ability, unable to swim one stroke
•Level 2 — Can swim one length of the swimming area and cannot tread water for 2 minutes
•Level 3 — Can swim two lengths of the swimming area and tread water for 5 minutes

Watercraft Activities
All campers will have a chance to participate in canoeing. Other watercraft use is based upon swimming
ability and activity availability. To participate in kayaking or paddle boarding, campers must complete a more
stringent swim evaluation.
• Canoeing: Open to all grade levels and all swimming levels.
• Kayaking: Open to girls entering grades 4-12; Must be a Level 2 or 3 swimmer and able to reach foot
    pegs.
• Paddle Boards: Open to girls entering grades 6-12; Must be a Level 3 swimmer.

NOTE: Sailing activities will not take place in 2021 due to the size of the boats and inability for sailors to
maintain physical distance while on the boat. We look forward to sailing again in the future when conditions
permit!
