Welcome to The Elloe Oracle Magazine Dear Friends and Neighbours Welcome to another year and another lockdown! This edition of the Elloe Oracle will be a digital version—we rely on volunteers to deliver the magazine to your homes and with the current virulent strain we do not feel it is right or safe to ask them to put themselves at risk by delivering. For all of our current advertisers we will be crediting you with a free edition. We thank you all for your support ! Without you we wouldn't have a magazine. The positive news is that we have a vaccine and more are being announced as I write this. Please beware of scams—no one should ask you to pay or register your bank details for a vaccine. Stay safe! New releases for Feb/Mar 2021 Kate Garraway shares the raw and emotional story of the devastating impact that Covid-19 has had on her family - and how they are finding strength in hope. In March 2020, Kate Garraway's husband, Derek Draper, contracted Covid-19 and was placed in a medically-induced coma. Initially, Kate was told that he would not survive. Still in hospital and in a critical condition, he is thought to be the UK's longest-fighting Covid-19 patient. In this intimate book, Kate shares her deeply personal story. As well as recounting how the illness took hold of their lives, she writes about how she is coping with the uncertainty of their future, how she's supporting her children through this traumatic time. Kate hopes that by revealing her own personal experience, it will give comfort to others. 5
South Holland District Council As we begin a New Year, we hope overall it will be better than the last, but to begin with, we face very similar challenges we had for much of 2020. From a business level, SHDC has been able to support many businesses who have been unable to operate through the Local Restrictions Support Grant. This support, combined with the Furlough Scheme extension through to March, will assist many local businesses through these continuing difficult times. We hope through the vaccines, there is light at the end of the tunnel in 2021. There has been much correspondence in Weston regarding a proposed 150 property development (application number H22-1135-20). As is within their power, a District Councillor can request an application within their ward be debated at Planning Committee and Andrew has requested this to happen. For information, the Planning Committee is the highest level an application can be determined within the Local Authority. The Committee consists of 15 Councillors. However, as Andrew and Rodney sit on the Committee and Anthony is a substitute who could be called up to attend a meeting, we are not allowed to give any view as this is the considered as Pre-Determination and rules the member out of the voting process. This can be frustrating to your Councillors, as we do get asked our views by the public, but can’t say and have to follow the rules. Rest assured though that we do listen to all comments put forward to us though. The Street Ambassadors are still operating within the ward and continue help households and those who have been shielding during the Pandemic by shopping, collecting prescriptions and checking on that those who are unable to get out. If you require assistance, please contact your Ambassador or Andrew. Please continue to stay safe and follow the Government guidelines. Should you have any issues, please feel free to contact your councilors on: Andrew Woolf 01406 373008, 07868 701659, Member of Parliament for awoolf@sholland.gov.uk South Holland and The Deepings: Anthony Casson John Hayes House of Commons, 01775 723965, 07889 811845, Westminster ,London.SW1A 0AA acasson@sholland.gov.uk Constituency Office Rodney Grocock 24-25 Westlode Street, 01775 713989, Spalding,PE11 2AF Grocock@sholland.gov.uk Tel: 01775 711534 6
Cowbit Village Hall Cowbit Village Hall committee are holding their AGM on Monday 1st March 2021 7.30pm; along with government guidelines this will be an online meeting details will be on the village Facebook and webpage. 2021 marks 10 years of the Cowbit Facebook page, started out just as a community group for fundraising for the forthcoming 2012 Jubilee it started to grow quickly in members and developed into the online community group it is now. We have over 1.8k members that are resident or connected to the village and we see a wide range of topics people talk about; everything from missing pets & dog mess to Support over the lockdown and recommendations on local tradesmen. Within a few years of the group starting up it was clear that a second group was needed as many people use Facebook to sell or buy products locally and this is the reason for its name. The village hall committee with the help of the 4 admins that run the day-to-day tasks try to make sure that the few rules are applied fairly and stop in the group been swamped with adverts or irrelevant information not connected to the village. These roles are reviewed throughout the year and always agreed by the Village Hall committee at its next meeting. Today more than ever with the lockdowns and people having little or no contact with the outside world it’s more important than ever people talk and keep in touch; and the FB group has meant many members are able to keep in contact or seek help and support in the village or wider community. But we all hope that during 2021 we will be able to see much more of each other in the real world. HOPE Dear Friends, As I write this we’re all going through unprecedented times, not only locally but globally. We’re in a new national lockdown, and the pandemic statistics for new cases, hospital admissions, and deaths far supersede those recorded at the height of the pandemic last spring. We’re also faced with at least one new, far more infectious, variant of the virus. We’re told the NHS is in crisis, and hospitals are functioning at near capacity. We feel vulnerable. Things seem bleak. Some of us will probably be at an all-time low, mentally and emotionally, as the pandemic continues to remove from our lives pretty well all close contact with others, most importantly our friends and families, other than by electronic means. I long to hug and kiss my children and grandchildren for the first time since last March and, if living apart from your families, you’ll be feeling that way too. But there’s light on the horizon in the form of new vaccines, produced at incredible speed. However dark things may seem, there is hope. At Christmas, the world celebrated Hope coming into the world in the form of Jesus, a tiny baby born in a humble stable; and last Sunday we celebrated the Bap- tism of Christ. This was when Jesus, as a man, was baptised in the Jordan by John the Baptist, and began his adult ministry, bringing even more hope to the world. Jesus came into the world to bring into our lives his love, light and hope. The new vaccine which is just beginning to be rolled out to the public is the result of the superhuman efforts and devoted work of many people, to whom we owe so much. But we owe so much more to our Creator God - our Maker from whom everything ultimately comes; our loving God who gives us all that we have, makes us all that we are, and who sent his Son Jesus to be our Saviour and Redeemer and to bring us his light and hope and love. I hope and pray that in these dark times you will see the light of Jesus and be able to focus on his light, the light which overcomes all darkness. For it is Jesus who brings light and love, hope, acceptance, forgiveness, impartiality, gentleness and peace into all our lives, even in the very darkest of times. I hope that you will be able not only to see his light, but also to feel his presence. I pray that you will all remain safe and well at this challenging time. I also pray that you will all feel some of the warmth of Jesus’ love in your lives, see his light, and know the comfort, peace and hope which he alone brings. Happy New Year! What a work filled Autumn term we had at Weston St Mary Primary school. All of the children (and the staff) worked extremely hard in the new “normal” that we had in place. Everyone was so resilient, always working with a smile on their face! Now it is the new year and the start of the Spring term. Even though we are now in another lockdown this doesn’t mean that our learning has stopped. Staff have been working really hard to pre record lessons and also provide “live” lessons via Teams to ensure that those children who are at home (keeping safe) still have access to all of the different subjects and areas of learning that they would experience whilst actually in school. Each class will still be looking at and continuing with their own Big Questions - Maple Class – Are humans the most powerful things on Earth? Willow Class – Why do humans create Art? The class will be focusing on the Mayans for this. Birch Class – Can one person change the world? The person who this class will be looking at this term will be Nikola Tesla. All of the staff and children (whether in school or at home working) from Weston St Mary’s school would like to send their best wishes to all residents of Weston and surrounding communities during this uncertain time. Keep safe! WESTON PARISH COUNCIL Dear Parishioners Firstly, I hope you all made the best of Christmas and the new year. With the Covid19 vaccine now up and running, let us hope we can eradicate this virus and get back to normality. Over the past number of years, we have campaigned to reduce some of the 40mph speed limits within Weston Hills village area, and to that end I can confirm that all the 40mph “buffer zones” will be removed and replaced with 30mph limits. The locations are:- 1—Broadgate South between Austendkye Rd and the 30 limit at the beginning of the main part of the village. 2—Old Fendyke Rd on the approach to the school. 3—Broadgate South adjacent to Honeypot children’s nursery. These changes should either be in place or soon to be implemented. Our last challenge is to have the 40mph speed limit on Austendyke Rd reduced to a 30 limit and Highways will carry out a survey sometime in the next few months. The Council have also agreed to replace the old Speed Indicator Device with a new one which will give us the added evidence to justify the reduction of the current speed limit. At Januarys Parish meeting the proposed development on the High Rd in Weston by Persimmon Homes was unanimously rejected and objections raised by resident’s along with those of the Council have been sent to South Holland District Council. Other technical objections have been sent with regards to certain polices of the South East Lincolnshire Local Plan and the South Holland Local Plan being ignored by the developer within their submission. Secondly the proposal plans to omit affordable housing based on the proposal not being viable, which means that the S106 financial contributions towards infrastructure for the community is reduced considerably. All these objections have been sent to our local MP, Lord Porter – Leader of SHDC, our three District Councillors, the Chair of the Planning Committee and to the local news media including BBC Look North in order to raise the serious consequences this proposal raises for the residents of Weston. In the last edition I mentioned the possibility of our Precept being raised to £18000 from £15750 in order to cut down on the overspend we have maintained for several years. It was agreed at Council level to leave the Precept at £15750 due to the current economic situation caused by the COVID pandemic. Chris Dicks , Chairman ,Weston Parish Council. 17
