The Spirit Holy Ghost Lutheran Church August 2018 Being & Making Disciples! “Is That You, Holy Spirit?” Acts 2 speaks about the Holy Spirit entering the hearts and lives of the believers “with the sound of a rushing wind and flames of fire,” and I believe that God continues to operate in such a fashion even in our day and time! Rarely has He ever moved in my life in that way. On the contrary, it seems that His work in me is less like a “rush” and more like a “hush”— that He certainly plants ideas in my heart, but it’s more often with a gentle whisper, a soft touch, a slight hint, or a tiny nudge. Yes, that’s the more common experience of the Holy Spirit breathing in my life; and if I’m not tuned-in and paying close enough attention, then I fail to recognize it, even when it’s right in front of my face. I have been praying for several years now about what a “Small Group Ministry” might look like at HGLC. I’ve looked at some resources, studied different church models, and even visited with pastors who have excelled in small group programs, but it has never come together in a way that seemed doable in our church. Until in the past year or so some pieces began coming together as several new families joined the church who have experience in small groups. One of these persons asked if he could begin a small group. Others who had been part of such experiences came forward to express interest. Some others mentioned that a couple years back, here at HGLC, there was an adult Sunday School class that developed into a small group. Others of us then recalled a time about fifteen years ago when a program called “D&D” (Dessert & Devotion) formed into small groups. With all these “whispers” floating around, I was still walking in the dark and not aware of the Spirit’s tender movement, until in an adult Sunday School class that I recently led, there was a chapter titled “covenantal friendships” which was basically about small groups. There were about thirty-five adults in the class that day, and the Holy Spirit finally hit me with that “rush” of a mighty wind! I passed around a sign-up sheet to see who might be interested in being part of a small group formation, and two-thirds of the class exhibited a desire! And so, after a long pregnancy, the idea to just put it out there and see who might be interested by signing up was born on that day! Sometimes, I am SO SLOW to get it, yet God is ever faithful in continuing to offer His breeze, plant seeds, softly water, and cultivate Himself in me! So that’s the big strategic plan that has been nearly six years in the making — to simply see who might be interested in this venture by signing up. There are already ten leaders who have stepped forward to say they would be group conveners for a small group — to call, remind, invite, and select a topic, verse, or book for conversation with fellow Christians. It will be called “3-F’s Ministry: Faith, Food & Fellowship.” Groups would create their own identity and game plan and probably meet just once a month at a group-determined time for about ninety minutes. Meeting place will be determined by the group — could be someone’s home, the church, a park, restaurant, red brick parsonage across the street, etc. Food will be decided by each group — might be covered dish, or dessert only, or call out pizza, or wine & cheese. A faith topic of some sort will be chosen by individual groups — possibly a Bible verse, or quote, or subject related to faith issues, or a book. Sign-up sheets will be available beginning on Rally Day, August 12 for those who might be interested to see how the Holy Spirit might move and shape us in this. So until then, sense what the Spirit does in your heart with this idea — and don’t ignore the little prod, for He may not come to you in wind and flame, but in that tiny touch in your heart! Amen? Amen! +Pastor Bobby

Special Offerings Each month Holy Ghosters have the opportunity to provide funding support above and beyond their regular tithes and offerings using the “little brown pew envelope;” and what a response it has been thus far in 2018! See the list below and celebrate with God the generosity of those who in faith have shared with these specific ministries! The Stewardship Team sets the monthly special offerings recipients. January - Funeral Pantry Fund: $4,538.25 February - Support Staff Appreciation: $2,010.95 March - LWR quilt postage: $1,914.19 Braeutigam Fire (Special offering-March 19th & 26th): $2,163.00 April – Additional Kindernest classroom: $5,831.72 May - Property loan reduction - not quantifiable - all proceeds went into Property Fund June - Mexico Mission: $1,405.00 July - Life Care Ministry: $854.00 (as of the printing of this newsletter) P.S.: The question is asked, “Why is it commonly requested to give above and beyond your regular tithes and offerings?” Answer: One’s weekly or monthly commitment to the general ministry of Holy Ghost Church (white envelopes) and the Building Fund (pink envelopes) through the offering envelope program or on-line giving via your bank, supports the general budget of the church which includes hundreds of facets of that ministry plan. “Special offering” means just that — special gifts given to support needs and opportunities in addition to, not in lieu of the general budget. Special giving is not intended to be a substitute for one’s regular giving but an extra opportunity to give thanks to God for His many blessings! 4
The Spirit August 2018 WORSHIP IN AUGUST Saturday, 6:00pm offers an informal service; Sunday, 8:00am is a traditional service; and Sunday, 10:30am is a varied format. “Come, let us worship the Lord!” AUGUST WORSHIP THEMES Sermon Series: “A Summer in the Songs!” The summer sermon series features many of our favorite hymns of worship. As we sing the familiar words, we often miss their true meaning. May God inspire us on new levels as we sing, listen, worship, and honor the God whose praise we sing! Sat. & Sun., Aug. 4 & 5: “Lift High the Cross” is the song of the week as the message focus is on “witnessing our faith.” Come and worship, but then go and witness! Sat. & Sun., Aug. 11 & 12: You’ve heard of Christmas at Christmas and even Christmas in July, but we will be doing Christmas in August. The favorite hymn for the day is “Joy to the World” whose focus is not just Christmas but preparation for the second coming of Jesus! 10:30 is Rally Day! Sat. & Sun., Aug. 18 & 19: Pastor Rick McMinn will take the pulpit and bring a message uplifting “Sweet By and By.” Sometimes we may feel like a rock sinking to the bottom of the lake, yet Jesus is that Rock that has gone to the depths of those places for us, on which we can stand! Sat. & Sun., Aug. 25 & 26: “Healer of Our Every Ill” is the song for this weekend as a “Healing Service” is observed. Jesus invites us to come to him “all who labor and are heavy laden,” so as we come to communion, we take Him up on that offer. Sat. & Sun., Sept. 1 & 2: We conclude our Summer in the Songs on this Labor Day weekend with a very traditional closing hymn, “The Doxology.” The word ‘Doxology’ means ‘Give glory.’ This weekend’s focus will be a great reminder for us to “Give Glory to God in All Things!” Worship Formats in August Sat., 6pm Sun., 8am Sun., 10:30am Aug. 4/5 Informal/organ Tradi onal/organ Praise Service Aug. 11/12 Informal/piano Tradi onal/organ Semi-tradi onal/piano Aug. 18/19 Informal/piano Tradi onal/organ Rally Day/Youth Service Aug. 25/26 Informal/piano Tradi onal/organ Semi-tradi onal/organ $$$ THRIVENT CHOICE DOLLARS $$$ CHRISTIAN RADIO Thrivent Financial Services members are able to STATION designate “fraternal” dollars to HGLC, Kindernest Tune into FM 88.1—KLOVE to Preschool, or a number of other non-profits that hear some great Christian lyrics may be close to their hearts.
