P Since we are gathered to hear God’s Word, call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. [Luke 18:13] Kneel/Stand CONFESSION OF SINS C Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. ABSOLUTION P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. KYRIE ~ Lord, Have Mercy Mark 10:47 A For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord. A For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord. A For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord. A Help, save, comfort and defend us, gracious Lord. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS ~ Glory to God in the Highest Luke 2:14; John 1:29
SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 C And also with you. P Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, by Your gift alone Your faithful people render true and laudable service. Help us steadfastly to live in this life according to Your promises and finally attain Your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. Sit OLD TESTAMENT READING 1 Kings 17:8-16 9 Then the word of the LORD came to [Elijah], “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.” 10So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.” 11And as she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” 12And she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die.” 13And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14For thus says the LORD the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the LORD sends rain upon the earth.’” 15And she went and did as Elijah said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. HYMN OF THE MONTH: O God, O Lord of Heaven and Earth St. 1-3 LSB 834 This is our Hymn of the Month for September – The organist will play the melody through once and then we will sing the first three verses at a somewhat slower tempo to better learn how the melody fits with the text. EPISTLE Galatians 5:25—6:10 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. 1Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be
in himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5For each will have to bear his own load. 6One who is taught the word must share all good things with the one who teaches. 7Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. P This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE John 20:31 HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 6: 24-34 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the sixth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ.
APOSTLES’ CREED C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Sit SERMON HYMN: There is a Time for Everything LSB 762 This hymn was written by Pastor Steven Starke who was selected by the LCMS Commission on Worship in 2002 to write a hymn of remembrance of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This weekend as we commemorate the 20th anniversary of that event in our nation’s history, it is appropriate that we sing that hymn today. SERMON: Matthew 6:24-34 Rev. Craig Meissler Stand P The peace of God, which passes all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. C Amen. OFFERTORY HYMN: For the Beauty of the Earth OAR 332 Text and tune: Public domain Offerings Brought Forward We would ask all present to please complete an attendance card found in the pew and place it in the offering plate in the back of the sanctuary upon entering or exiting in order that we have a record of your worshipping with us. RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS Alex and Linda Diaz (Shepherd of the Hills LCMS, San Antonio, TX) Amanda Dickinson (Divine Shepherd LCMS, Black Hawk, SD) Glenn Hahn (Gloria Dei LCMS, Houston, TX) Adam and Kim Martin (Grace LCMS, San Diego, CA) Blanca Venturini (Concordia LCMS, San Antonio, TX) Emma Wilber (Redeemer LCMS, San Antonio, TX) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH [1 Timothy 2:1-4] SERVICE OF THE SACRAMENT PREFACE P The Lord be with you. 2 Timothy 4:22 C And also with you. P Lift up your hearts. C We lift them to the Lord. [Colossians 3:1] P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C It is right to give Him thanks and praise. [Psalm 136] P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS ~ Holy, Holy, Holy Isaiah 6:3; Matthew 21:9
PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING P Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, and made His cross a life- giving tree for all who trust in Him. We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us: LORD’S PRAYER Matthew 6:9-13 Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE WORDS OF OUR LORD Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-25 P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” PAX DOMINI ~ The Peace of the Lord John 20:19 P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C Amen.
AGNUS DEI ~ Lamb of God John 1:29 Sit DISTRIBUTION The pastor and those who assist him receive the body and blood of Christ first and then distribute them to those who come to receive, saying: Take, eat; this is the true body of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, given into death for your sins. Amen. Take, drink; this is the true blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, shed for the forgiveness of your sins. Amen. In dismissing the communicants, the following is said: P The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen and preserve you in body and soul to life everlasting. Depart T in peace. C Amen. WELCOME TO WORSHIP Worship is a special time in our week. During this hour, God comes to us in His Word and His Sacraments and we respond in prayer and praise! Here are a few practical tips for minimizing distractions and maximizing participation: • Every day we are bombarded with messages. But God wants to give you the most important message you will receive all week! Turn off or put away your phones and electronic devices so that you can participate fully in what God is doing during this special time dedicated to Him. • While it is sometimes necessary to quiet an infant or toddler with a small snack or a bottle, we ask that no other foods or beverages be brought into the worship space (sanctuary). • Even pre-school and elementary-age children can participate in worship! (See “Children & Worship” for details) • The ministerial staff is always available to you should you have spiritual care needs. Please contact the front office to arrange for pastoral care. • Hearing devices are available for the hearing impaired. Please speak with one of the ushers. SUNDAY EDUCATION HOUR | 9:45-10:45am For Adults • Adult Bible Class / lecture style / Led by Pastor Meissler. For Students & Children • Nursery/Kinder (age 3 and up) meet in the gym classroom. • Grades 1-12, meet upstairs in the ministry building. Confirmation will resume September 19th. CHILDREN & WORSHIP We love children and are happy they are here with us. Just as a child learns to speak by imitating the voice of mom or dad, so, too a child learns to worship by participating in the service at an early age. If you have questions about how to incorporate your child into the worship life of the congregation in an age-appropriate way, please see one of the pastors. Assistance for children with special needs during worship and Sunday School is also available, see an usher for details. A fully equipped and staffed nursery is also available (ask an usher for directions). It is open for children up to age three. Parents can also use it when quieting a child or changing a diaper. The service can be heard in the nursery. We do ask that sick children not be left in the nursery for the well-being of the other children. Books, spiral notebooks, and colored pencils are available in the basket in the narthex for use during worship. Parents, please help your child(ren) put all items back in the basket in the lobby so that they are ready to be used again next week. Children’s bulletins are also available from the usher.
