First Presbyterian Church january 12, 2020 10:30 a.m. BAPTISM OF THE LORD SUNDAY The Service for the Lord’s Day Please sign the Welcome Pad and pass it along the pew. Turn off all cell phones, and refrain from using cameras during worship. Let us prepare our hearts and minds to worship God. Prayer of Preparation Holy God, You sent your Son to be baptized among sinners, to seek and save the lost. May we, who have been baptized in his name, never turn away from the world, but reach out in love to rescue the wayward; by the mercy of Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

* Prayer of Adoration The Confession of Sin * Call to Confession and Prayer of Confession....................................... Myles Fish Merciful God, In baptism you promise forgiveness and new life, making us part of the body of Christ. We confess that we remain preoccupied with ourselves, separated from one another. We cling to destructive habits, hold grudges, and show reluctance to welcome one another. We allow the past to hold us captive. In your loving-kindness, have mercy on us, and free us from sin. Fulfill the promises of our baptism so that we may rise to new life, and live together in grace. Amen. A brief period of silence is reserved for personal confession. 3
* Assurance of Pardon * The Peace Leader: Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you. As you share the good news of forgiveness in Jesus Christ, please offer one another these words: “The peace of Christ be with you.” Congregational Response: No. 475 – Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing nettleton 4

God called You “My beloved Son,” The suff’ring servant true, Sent You the kingdom to proclaim, God’s holy will to do. Straightway and steadfast until death You then obeyed God’s call Freely as Son of Man to serve And give Your life for all. We Respond to God’s Word * Hymn of Response: No. 307 – God of Grace and God of Glory................... (see page 13) * Affirmation of Faith................................................................Alexandra Mauney God’s redeeming work in Jesus Christ embraces the whole of human life: social and cultural, economic and political, scientific and technological, individual and corporate. It includes the natural environment as exploited and despoiled by sin. It is the will of God that the divine purpose for human life shall be fulfilled under the rule of Christ and all evil be banished from creation. Biblical visions and images of the rule of Christ, such as a heavenly city, the household of God, a new heaven and earth, a marriage feast, and an unending day culminate in the image of the kingdom. The kingdom represents God’s triumph over all that resists the divine will and disrupts God’s creation. Already God’s reign is present as a ferment in the world, stirring hope in all people and preparing the world to receive its ultimate judgment and redemption. With an urgency born of this hope, the church applies itself to present tasks and strives for a better world. It does not identify limited progress with the kingdom of God on earth, nor does it despair in the face of disappointment and defeat. In steadfast hope, the church looks beyond all partial achievement to the final triumph of God. Amen. – from the Confession of 1967 Prayers of the People concluding with the Lord’s Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offering 6
Offertory: Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts............................K. Lee Scott (b. 1950) Chancel Choir Jesus, thou joy of loving hearts, Thou fount of life, thou light of heav’n, From the best bliss that earth imparts, we turn unfilled to thee again. Thy truth unchanged hath ever stood; Thou savest those that on thee call; To them that seek, Lord, thou art good; to them that find thee, all-in-all. Our restless spirits yearn for thee where’er our changeful lot is cast; Glad, when thy gracious smile we see, blest, when our faith can hold thee fast. Come, holy Jesus, and ever with us stay; Make all our moments calm and bright; Chase the dark night of sin away, shed o’er the world thy holy light! – attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux (1091-1153) * Congregational Response: Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow lasst uns erfreuen * Prayer of Dedication 7

Isaiah 42:1-9 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. 11
Acts 10: 34-48 Then Peter began to speak to them: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. 12
