Prayers for the Morning The Minister shall read aloud these Sentences of the Scriptures that follow. O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: let the whole earth stand in awe of him. Psalm 96:9 Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. John 6.68 1st Hymn #2 (Common Praise - Canada) When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking cries: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" Alike at work and prayer to Jesus I repair: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" Whene'er the sweet church bell peals over hill and dell, may Jesus Christ be praised! O hark to what it sings, as joyously it rings: may Jesus Christ be praised! In heaven's eternal bliss the loveliest strain is this, may Jesus Christ be praised! The power of darkness fear when this sweet chant they hear: may Jesus Christ be praised! To God, the Word, on high the hosts of angels cry: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" Let mortals, too, upraise their voice in hymns of praise: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" Let earth's wide circle round in joyful notes resound: "May Jesus Christ be praised!"
Let air and sea and sky from depth to height reply: "May Jesus Christ be praised!" Be this, while life is mine, my canticle divine: may Jesus Christ be praised! Be this the eternal song through all the ages on: may Jesus Christ be praised! The Minister, turning to the people, shall say the Exhortation. DEARLY beloved, we have come together in the presence of Almighty God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his holy Word, and to ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and our salvation. And so that we may prepare ourselves in heart and mind to worship him, let us kneel in silence, and with penitent and obedient hearts confess our sins, that we may obtain forgiveness of the same by his infinite goodness and mercy. A general Confession to be said of the whole Congregation with the Minister. Merciful God, you have called us to live lives worthy of the calling to which we have been called. But we confess to you and each other that we have not always spoken the truth in love; we have not always made every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Forgive us and, by your grace, help us to grow in every way into him who is our head, Jesus Christ. Amen. The Absolution, or Remission of sins, to be pronounced by the Priest alone.
The Almighty and merciful Lord grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of his Holy Spirit. Amen. Minister. O Lord, open thou our lips; People. And our mouth shall show forth thy praise. Minister. Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised; People. There is no end of his greatness. Minister. One generation shall praise your works to another People. And shall declare your love. Minister. All your works praise you, O Lord, People. And your faithful servants bless you. Minister. They make known the glory of your kingdom People. And speak of your love. Minister. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord; People. Let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever. Canticle Longing said together. Come, true light.
Come, life eternal. Come, hidden mystery. Come, treasure without name. Come, reality beyond all words. Come, person beyond all understanding. Come, rejoicing without end. Come, light that knows no evening. Come, unfailing expectation of the saved. Come, raising of the fallen. Come, resurrection of the dead. Come, all powerful for unceasingly you create, re-fashion and change all things by your will alone. Come, invisible whom none may touch and handle. Come, for you continue always unmoved, yet at every instant you are holy in movement; you draw near to us who lie in hell, yet you remain higher than the heavens. Come, for your name fills our hearts with longing and is ever on our lips; yet who you are and what your nature is, we cannot say or know. Come, alone to the alone. Come, for you are yourself the desire that is within me. Come, my breath and my life.
Come, the consolation of my humble soul. Come, my joy, my glory, my endless delight. GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. PSALM 84 said together. How lovely is your dwelling place, O LORD of hosts! My soul longs, indeed it faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God. Happy are those who live in your house,
ever singing your praise. Selah Happy are those whose strength is in you, in whose heart are the highways to Zion. As they go through the valley of Baca they make it a place of springs; the early rain also covers it with pools. They go from strength to strength; the God of gods will be seen in Zion. O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob! Selah Behold our shield, O God; look on the face of your anointed. For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than live in the tents of wickedness. For the LORD God is a sun and shield; he bestows favor and honor. No good thing does the LORD withhold from those who walk uprightly. O LORD of hosts, happy is everyone who trusts in you.
GLORY be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, Is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. TE DEUM LAUDAMUS said together. WE praise you, O God, we acclaim you as the Lord. All creation worships you, the Father everlasting. To you all angels, all the powers of heaven, the cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white-robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you: Father, of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all praise, the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the King of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you took our flesh to set us free you humbly chose the Virgin’s womb. You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You are seated at God’s right hand in glory. We believe that you will come and be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, And bring us with your saints to glory everlasting. Save your people, Lord, and bless your inheritance.
Govern and uphold them now and always. Day by day we bless you. We praise your name for ever. Keep us today, Lord, from all sin. Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy. Lord, show us your love and mercy, for we have put our trust in you. In you, Lord, is our hope: let us never be put to shame. God so loved the world, freely sending the Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life-gate that all may go in. Refrain: Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the earth hear God’s voice. Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give God the glory, who great things has done. O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood, to every believer the promise of God: that when the offender, repenting, believes, through Jesus’ atonement, God’s pardon receives.

ALMIGHTY GOD, we are taught by your word that all our doings without love are worth nothing. Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love, the true bond of peace and of all virtue; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Second Collect, for Justice. BLESSED PRESENCE, who created us in your own image: Grant us grace fearlessly to contend against evil and to make no peace with oppression; and, that we may reverently use our freedom, help us to employ it in the maintenance of justice in our communities and among the nations, to the glory of your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Third Collect, for Reconciliation. HOLY ONE, creator of all that is, seen and unseen, of story and of song, of heartbeat and of tears of bodies, souls, voices, and all relations: you are the God of all truth and the way of all reconciliation. Uphold with your love and compassion all who open their lives in the sacred sharing of their stories, breathe in us the grace to trust in your loving forgiveness, that we may face our histories with courage; touch us through the holy gift of story that those who speak and those who listen may behold your own redeeming presence; guide us with holy wisdom to enter through the gates of remorse that our feet may walk gently and firmly on the way of justice and healing. Amen. The Summary of the Law. OUR LORD Jesus Christ said: hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with
all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and write both these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee. Reflection Intercessions A General Thanksgiving, to be said by the Minister and people together ALMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, We your servants do give you most humble and heartfelt thanks For all your goodness and loving kindness to us and to all people: We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your in- estimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And we beseech you, give us that due sense of all your mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen. A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom. ALMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee; and dost promise that when two or three are gathered together in thy Name thou wilt grant their requests: Fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.
Poem Bread Richard Levine, from A Tide of a Hundred Mountains, Bright Hill Press, 2012 Read by Nancy Ruth Jackson Each night, in a space he’d make between waking and purpose, my grandfather donned his one suit, in our still dark house, and drove through Brooklyn’s deserted streets following trolley tracks to the bakery. There he’d change into white linen work clothes and cap, and in the absence of women, his hands were both loving, well into dawn and throughout the day— kneading, rolling out, shaping each astonishing moment of yeasty predictability in that windowless world lit by slightly swaying naked bulbs, where the shadows staggered, woozy with the aromatic warmth of the work. Then, the suit and drive, again. At our table, graced by a loaf that steamed when we sliced it, softened the butter and leavened the very air we’d breathe, he’d count us blessed.
