Bible Unwrapped Joel Page 9
Session 1 As you start, allocate a chair-person who will read out these instructions. Read the whole session’s instructions before starting. Bible unwrapped is a chance to work through an entire book of the Bible and think about what God is telling us through the book. It’s a chance for you to spend time grappling with God’s word, without a leader (they are just there to help you keep on track and to time, and will not give you any pointers at all!). So, if you are prone to be quiet – do speak up as we help one another better understand God’s work together. If you are prone to speak too much - hold back and help everyone contribute. There are some hints and tips to get you going – but then it’s over to you! We’ve taken out the headings and the verse numbers – they were added in by the editors and a the headings are a matter of interpretation rather than the inspired word of God. We’ll be looking through the Old Testament book of Joel. Many of us will never have looked at Joel in the past at all! What does it actually mean? What does it teach us about God? Why is it in the Bible? What does it teach us about how to follow God in London and further afield? In 2 Timothy 3:16 Paul wrote that “all Scripture is God- breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness…” – so how does Joel fit with that? How to use Bible Unwrapped This weekend we’ll have three Bible Unwrapped sessions. There are instructions on what to do in each session, and space to make notes. The full text of Joel is also included on at the end of this booklet for you to scribble and jot down notes and thoughts. Reading the Bible carefully and deliberately As you read Joel it’s important to read the Bible text carefully and deliberately. The first thing to do when approaching the Bible is to pray for God’s help – the Bible is God’s word, and we need His Spirit to help us understand. So, at the start of each session (and during each session!) pray for God to help you understand his word. As you read through Joel it might be very tempting to skim over the details. If we do this we’ll miss out on what’s being said. This kinds of questions will help: What type of literature is this? (e.g. is it poetry, narrative, a speech…etc.?) Is there anything we don’t understand? Are there any shocks or surprises? Who are the characters? How do they react? Why do they react that way? Are there any repeated themes or ideas? Page 10
What’s the tone of the passage? How does it make us feel? How is the passage structured? How would we split it up? How does the passage flow? Are there linking words (but, therefore, for, so…etc.)? How does it fit into the surrounding context? How do we see God at work in this passage? What is the author’s intention? Why did he write it? Why did he write it in this way? It’s time to get stuck in!! Pray… appoint a time-keeper (note the finish time from the timetable) Read through the book once or twice on your own. Read it as fast as you can, without stopping over bits you don’t understand. Reading it quickly will help you get a feel for the bigger narrative flow. Then read it out loud once as a group. As it’s being read, note changes in scene, and things you don’t understand. Finally with the rest of the time, split the book up into 3 or 4 sections – look out for changes of location/theme/time/scene to help. What’s a rough summary of each section? Section 1: Section 2: Section 3: (Section 4): What do you think the book of Joel is doing? What could you pray for even after this brief look at the book? Pray If you have finished early, you’ll find it helpful to make a start on Session 2 Page 11
Session 2 Pray… appoint a time-keeper (note the finish time from the timetable) Zoom in on your first section (you may have started this last session). Read it through carefully and deliberately, using the questions in the introduction. Note down any observations. Try and write down the one big thing the author is telling you in the section (the main point). Section 1 Main Point: Do the same for Section 2 (and section 3 if you have 4 sections) What has this session added to your understanding of the book as a whole? What could you pray as a result? Pray If you have finished early, you’ll find it helpful to make a start on Session 3 Page 12
Session 3 Pray… appoint a time-keeper (note the finish time from the timetable) If you didn’t finish any sections from last time, quickly finish that now. Now try and pull all of your sections together: What’s the big point of the book of Joel? Section 1 Main Point: Section 2 Main Point: Section 3 Main Point: (Section 4 Main Point): What’s the overall message of the book? What’s the big thing that God is saying? The next thing to think about is application… How should we respond to the message of the book of Joel? What does Joel teach us about God? - What do we learn about His character? - What do we learn about His plans for the world? Page 13
- How does this encourage us to live in the light of his plans for the world? - What would this book have to say to the original readers? (People living before Jesus came) To what extent does that apply to us today as well? Why do we need to hear this truth? - When do we struggle to believe it? - What would change in our lives if we really did believe it? How can this point us to Jesus and help us love Him more? What might it mean to take refuge in him? How does this encourage us when we’re sharing the gospel with others in London? Pray Page 14
1 The word of the LORD1 that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel: 2 Hear this, you elders; 3 give ear, all inhabitants of the land! 4 Has such a thing happened in your days, 5 or in the days of your fathers? 6 Tell your children of it, 7 and let your children tell their children, 8 and their children to another generation. 9 What the cutting locust left, 10 the swarming locust has eaten. 11 What the swarming locust left, 12 the hopping locust has eaten, 13 and what the hopping locust left, 14 the destroying locust has eaten. 15 Awake, you drunkards, and weep, 16 and wail, all you drinkers of wine, 17 because of the sweet wine, 18 for it is cut off from your mouth. 19 For a nation has come up against my land, 20 powerful and beyond number; 21 its teeth are lions' teeth, 22 and it has the fangs of a lioness. 23 It has laid waste my vine 24 and splintered my fig tree; 25 it has stripped off their bark and thrown it down; 26 their branches are made white. 27 Lament like a virgin wearing sackcloth2 28 for the bridegroom of her youth. 29 The grain offering and the drink offering3 are cut off 30 from the house of the LORD. 31 The priests mourn, 32 the ministers of the LORD. 33 The fields are destroyed, 34 the ground mourns, 35 because the grain is destroyed, 36 the wine dries up, 37 the oil languishes. 38 Be ashamed, O tillers of the soil; 39 wail, O vine dressers, 40 for the wheat and the barley, 41 because the harvest of the field has perished. 42 The vine dries up; 43 the fig tree languishes. 44 Pomegranate, palm, and apple, 45 all the trees of the field are dried up, 1 Wherever the word ‘LORD’ is written in capitals, it is God’s personal name, Yahweh, rather than just another word for ‘God’ 2 A very rough, uncomfortable fabric that people wore as a sign of deep mourning or humiliation 3 In the Old Testament grain, wine and oil offerings maintained the people’s relationship with God Page 15
46 and gladness dries up 47 from the children of man. 48 Put on sackcloth and lament, O priests; 49 wail, O ministers of the altar. 50 Go in, pass the night in sackcloth, 51 O ministers of my God! 52 Because grain offering and drink offering 53 are withheld from the house of your God. 54 Consecrate a fast; 55 call a solemn assembly. 56 Gather the elders 57 and all the inhabitants of the land 58 to the house of the LORD your God, 59 and cry out to the LORD. 60 Alas for the day! 61 For the day of the LORD is near, 62 and as destruction from the Almighty it comes. 63 Is not the food cut off 64 before our eyes, 65 joy and gladness 66 from the house of our God? 67 The seed shrivels under the clods; 68 the storehouses are desolate; 69 the granaries are torn down 70 because the grain has dried up. 71 How the beasts groan! 72 The herds of cattle are perplexed 73 because there is no pasture for them; 74 even the flocks of sheep suffer. 75 To you, O LORD, I call. 76 For fire has devoured 77 the pastures of the wilderness, 78 and flame has burned 79 all the trees of the field. 80 Even the beasts of the field pant for you 81 because the water brooks are dried up, 82 and fire has devoured 83 the pastures of the wilderness. 84 Blow a trumpet in Zion4; 85 sound an alarm on my holy mountain! 86 Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, 87 for the day of the LORD is coming; it is near, 88 a day of darkness and gloom, 89 a day of clouds and thick darkness! 90 Like blackness there is spread upon the mountains 91 a great and powerful people; 92 their like has never been before, 4 The hill on which the city of Jerusalem was built Page 16
93 nor will be again after them 94 through the years of all generations. 95 Fire devours before them, 96 and behind them a flame burns. 97 The land is like the garden of Eden before them, 98 but behind them a desolate wilderness, 99 and nothing escapes them. 100 Their appearance is like the appearance of horses, 101 and like war horses they run. 102 As with the rumbling of chariots, 103 they leap on the tops of the mountains, 104 like the crackling of a flame of fire 105 devouring the stubble, 106 like a powerful army 107 drawn up for battle. 108 Before them peoples are in anguish; 109 all faces grow pale. 110 Like warriors they charge; 111 like soldiers they scale the wall. 112 They march each on his way; 113 they do not swerve from their paths. 114 They do not jostle one another; 115 each marches in his path; 116 they burst through the weapons 117 and are not halted. 118 They leap upon the city, 119 they run upon the walls, 120 they climb up into the houses, 121 they enter through the windows like a thief. 122 The earth quakes before them; 123 the heavens tremble. 124 The sun and the moon are darkened, 125 and the stars withdraw their shining. 126 The LORD utters his voice 127 before his army, 128 for his camp is exceedingly great; 129 he who executes his word is powerful. 130 For the day of the LORD is great and very awesome; 131 who can endure it? 132 “Yet even now,” declares the LORD, 133 “return to me with all your heart, 134 with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 135 and rend5 your hearts and not your garments.” 136 Return to the LORD your God, 137 for he is gracious and merciful, 138 slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; 139 and he relents over disaster. 5 To tear something into pieces Page 17
140 Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, 141 and leave a blessing behind him, 142 a grain offering and a drink offering 143 for the LORD your God? 144 Blow the trumpet in Zion; 145 consecrate a fast; 146 call a solemn assembly; 147 gather the people. 148 Consecrate the congregation; 149 assemble the elders; 150 gather the children, 151 even nursing infants. 152 Let the bridegroom leave his room, 153 and the bride her chamber. 154 Between the vestibule6 and the altar 155 let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep 156 and say, “Spare your people, O LORD, 157 and make not your heritage a reproach, 158 a byword among the nations. 159 Why should they say among the peoples, 160 ‘Where is their God?’” 161 Then the LORD became jealous for his land 162 and had pity on his people. 163 The LORD answered and said to his people, 164 “Behold, I am sending to you 165 grain, wine, and oil, 166 and you will be satisfied; 167 and I will no more make you 168 a reproach among the nations. 169 “I will remove the northerner far from you, 170 and drive him into a parched and desolate land, 171 his vanguard into the eastern sea, 172 and his rearguard into the western sea; 173 the stench and foul smell of him will rise, 174 for he has done great things. 175 “Fear not, O land; 176 be glad and rejoice, 177 for the LORD has done great things! 178 Fear not, you beasts of the field, 179 for the pastures of the wilderness are green; 180 the tree bears its fruit; 181 the fig tree and vine give their full yield. 182 “Be glad, O children of Zion, 183 and rejoice in the LORD your God, 184 for he has given the early rain for your vindication; 185 he has poured down for you abundant rain, 186 the early and the latter rain, as before. 6 The room in the temple at the furthest end to the alter Page 18
187 “The threshing floors shall be full of grain; 188 the vats shall overflow with wine and oil. 189 I will restore to you the years 190 that the swarming locust has eaten, 191 the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter, 192 my great army, which I sent among you. 193 “You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, 194 and praise the name of the LORD your God, 195 who has dealt wondrously with you. 196 And my people shall never again be put to shame. 197 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, 198 and that I am the LORD your God and there is none else. 199 And my people shall never again be put to shame. 200 “And it shall come to pass afterwards, 201 that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; 202 your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, 203 your old men shall dream dreams, 204 and your young men shall see visions. 205 Even on the male and female servants 206 in those days I will pour out my Spirit. 207 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood 208 and fire and columns of smoke. The sun shall be turned to 209 darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome 210 day of the LORD comes. And it shall come to pass that everyone 211 who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount 212 Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as 213 the LORD has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom 214 the LORD calls. 215 “For behold, in those days and at that time, when I restore the 216 fortunes of Judah7 and Jerusalem, I will gather all the nations and 217 bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat8. And I will enter 218 into judgement with them there, on behalf of my people and my 219 heritage Israel, because they have scattered them among the 220 nations and have divided up my land, and have cast lots for my 221 people, and have traded a boy for a prostitute, and have sold a 222 girl for wine and have drunk it. 223 “What are you to me, O Tyre and Sidon, and all the regions of 224 Philistia?9 Are you paying me back for something? If you are 225 paying me back, I will return your payment on your own head 226 swiftly and speedily. For you have taken my silver and my gold, 227 and have carried my rich treasures into your temples. You have 228 sold the people of Judah and Jerusalem to the Greeks in order to 229 remove them far from their own border. Behold, I will stir them 230 up from the place to which you have sold them, and I will return 231 your payment on your own head. I will sell your sons and your 7 Also called the ‘southern kingdom’, it is the region in which Jerusalem is part 8 Jehoshaphat means ‘the LORD has judged’ 9 Cities and regions neighbouring Israel, which Israel was often at war with Page 19
232 daughters into the hand of the people of Judah, and they will sell 233 them to the Sabeans10, to a nation far away, for the LORD has 234 spoken.” 235 Proclaim this among the nations: 236 Consecrate for war; 237 stir up the mighty men. 238 Let all the men of war draw near; 239 let them come up. 240 Beat your ploughshares into swords, 241 and your pruning-hooks into spears; 242 let the weak say, “I am a warrior.” 243 Hasten and come, 244 all you surrounding nations, 245 and gather yourselves there. 246 Bring down your warriors, O LORD. 247 Let the nations stir themselves up 248 and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; 249 for there I will sit to judge 250 all the surrounding nations. 251 Put in the sickle, 252 for the harvest is ripe. 253 Go in, tread, 254 for the wine press is full. 255 The vats overflow, 256 for their evil is great. 257 Multitudes, multitudes, 258 in the valley of decision! 259 For the day of the LORD is near 260 in the valley of decision. 261 The sun and the moon are darkened, 262 and the stars withdraw their shining. 263 The LORD roars from Zion, 264 and utters his voice from Jerusalem, 265 and the heavens and the earth quake. 266 But the LORD is a refuge to his people, 267 a stronghold to the people of Israel. 268 “So you shall know that I am the LORD your God, 269 who dwells in Zion, my holy mountain. 270 And Jerusalem shall be holy, 271 and strangers shall never again pass through it. 272 “And in that day 273 the mountains shall drip sweet wine, 274 and the hills shall flow with milk, 275 and all the stream beds of Judah 276 shall flow with water; 277 and a fountain shall come forth from the house of the LORD 278 and water the Valley of Shittim. 10 A nation in southern Arabia Page 20
279 “Egypt shall become a desolation 280 and Edom a desolate wilderness, 281 for the violence done to the people of Judah, 282 because they have shed innocent blood in their land. 283 But Judah shall be inhabited for ever, 284 and Jerusalem to all generations. 285 I will avenge their blood, 286 blood I have not avenged, 287 for the LORD dwells in Zion.” Page 21

I stand amazed in the presence O Church, arise and put your armour on of Jesus the Nazarene, Hear the call of Christ our Captain and wonder how he could love me, For now the weak can say that they are a sinner, condemned, unclean. strong In the strength that God has given How marvellous! How wonderful! With shield of faith and belt of truth, And my song shall ever be: We’ll stand against the devil’s lies How marvellous! How wonderful! An army bold, whose battle cry is love, Is my Saviour’s love for me! Reaching out to those in darkness 2. For me he prayed in the garden 2. Our call to war – to love the captive soul, and bowed to the will divine; But to rage against the captor he had no tears for his own griefs, And with the sword but sweat drops of blood for mine. That makes the wounded whole, How marvellous... We will fight with faith and valour 3. He took my sins and my sorrows, When faced with trials on every side he made them his very own; We know the outcome is secure he bore the burden to Calvary, And Christ will have and suffered and died alone. The prize for which He died – How marvellous... An inheritance of nations 4. When with the ransomed in glory 3. Come see the cross his face I at last shall see, Where love and mercy meet ’twill be my joy through the ages As the Son of God is stricken to sing of his love for me.
