Message from the County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Troy A. Brown The San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) is proud to provide the community with the 2021-2022 Student Events Catalog. The outstanding activities and events on the following pages, such as the county and state spelling bees, mock trial competitions, and science Olympiads, are designed to support student learning, encourage excellence, and recognize achievement among our county’s third- through 12th-grade students. The SJCOE invites all charter schools, parochial schools, private schools, public schools, and school districts located within San Joaquin County to take advantage of these activities and events that motivate student learning, promote teamwork, build school spirit, and celebrate education. At the events, students represent their school and district at the county level, and winners of these events often move on to represent the county at the state and national levels. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to make connections with each other and teams from other schools, too. This leadership experience, combined with the knowledge and skills that students gain from participation, further prepares them for success in college and career. Coordinated by the SJCOE’s Educational Services Division, San Joaquin County academic events are fun and unique educational opportunities that challenge students to think in complex ways and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in an environment outside of the classroom. It is with great pleasure that the SJCOE hosts these countywide activities and events. However, their success would not be possible without: • The support of our generous sponsors and our partnership with the San Joaquin County Office of Education Educational Foundation (SJCOEEF), county school districts, local businesses, and community organizations. • The volunteers who graciously donate their time and share their expertise and talents. • The educators and coaches who guide, train, and motivate students. • The families who promote student participation and encourage students to reach their goals by developing their abilities and pursuing their interests. • The students who proudly represent their school and district, challenge themselves and spend countless hours studying, researching, and practicing to improve and showcase their skills. Due to the ever-evolving circumstances of the pandemic and in an abundance of caution for the health and safety of students, families, and volunteers, many of this year’s activities and events have adapted to meet this uncertainty. However, whether held in-person or virtually, we are excited that our county’s students will have continued opportunities to compete and have the student-event experience this year. Sincerely, Troy A. Brown, Ed.D. San Joaquin County Superintendent of Schools

Also, engineering is fun! Students design and build mars landers to float in the vertical wind tunnel, sew and wire wearable technology to track how far they travel, and create cardboard equipment to control Nintendo games that they program. Teachers can book a field trip as a capstone to a project or as a chance to learn a new topic of your choosing. Contact us and we’ll work on a fun and engaging lesson for your class.
