Message from the Superintendent
                                James Mousalimas
The San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) is proud to provide
the community with the 2020-2021 Student Events Catalog. The outstanding
activities and events on the following pages, such as the county and
state spelling bees, mock trial competitions, and science Olympiads, are
designed to support student learning, encourage excellence, and recognize
achievement among our county’s third through 12th-grade students.

Coordinated by the SJCOE’s Educational Services Division, San Joaquin
County academic events are fun and unique educational opportunities that
challenge students to think in complex ways and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in an
environment outside of the classroom. At the events, students represent their school and district at the
county-level, and winners of these events often move on to represent the county at the state and national
level. This experience, along with the knowledge and skills that students gain from participation, further
prepares them for success in college and career.

The SJCOE encourages all charter schools, parochial schools, private schools, public schools, and school
districts located within San Joaquin County to take advantage of these activities and events that motivate
student learning, promote teamwork, build school spirit, and celebrate education.

It is with great pleasure that the SJCOE hosts these countywide activities and events. However, their
success would not be possible without:

• The support of our generous sponsors and our partnership with the San Joaquin County Office of
Education Educational Foundation (SJCOEEF), county school districts, local businesses, and
       community organizations.
• The volunteers who graciously donate their time and share their expertise and talents.
• The educators and coaches who guide, train, and motivate students.
• The families who promote student participation and encourage students to reach their goals by
developing their abilities and pursuing their interests.
• The students who proudly represent their school and district, challenge themselves, and spend
countless hours studying, researching, and practicing to improve and showcase their skills.

We enter this year of academic competitions and events with the same uncertainty all school-related
activities must face during this pandemic and the ever-evolving circumstances it has created. Some
events will not be possible this year. Others might look different or take place virtually. But there will still
be opportunities for students to strive, compete, and have the student-event experience this year. Working
alongside the educators, volunteers, and community partners -- we are determined to meet this challenge for
the sake of our students.

Sincerely,

James A. Mousalimas
County Superintendent of Schools

The Central California eSports League (CCEL) is
providing additional opportunities for high school students to have
their voices heard, obtain additional scholarships to college, and
foster healthy digital citizenship through structured, competitive
online video gaming. Our league is the only full-inclusion high
school sports program currently being offered within the central

The San Joaquin County Office of Education FabLab is an engineering
classroom designed to “WOW.” The idea is for students to learn Next
Generation Science Standards (NGSS) engineering design
standards while being amazed at their own ability to use math,
science, and technology to invent something new.

The lab has tons of high-end equipment (laser cutters, 3D
printers, CNC milling, robotics arenas, vinyl cutter, and more
than 100 computers from 3D augmented reality zSpace
workstations, and tiny Arduinos) to give an amazing science
and engineering experience to students who come for field

with the achievements of all youth and concentrates its efforts on secondary students from public and private
schools throughout California. The Decathlon embodies a partnership of businesses, foundations, and individuals in
cooperation with the educational community and county offices of education.

A team consists of nine high school students from the same school. The nine-member team is comprised of three Honor,
three Scholastic, and three Varsity students, as indicated by the following academic categories:

Category GPA
Honor 3.80-4.00
Scholastic 3.20-3.799
Varsity 3.199 & below

The California Academic Decathlon is a program in which both
public and private high school students are eligible to compete
as individuals and as team members in a series of 10 academic
tests and demonstrations. These include mathematics, economics,
science, social science, art, language and literature, music, essay,
interview, and speech.

The Decathlon is funded by the San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE), with some expenses paid courtesy
of the San Joaquin County Office of Education Educational Foundation, which provides money to enhance and upgrade
the program. Corporate sponsorship and other personal contributions for the Academic Decathlon help to keep the cost
to enter a team at $450 in the San Joaquin County competition. The SJCOE also provides the administration and
oversight of the general program.

Mock Trial
               February 2021

About the competition
Mock Trial has been a tradition in San Joaquin County for over 20 years. This outstanding high school event is
sponsored by the San Joaquin County Bar Association, Humphreys College, Laurence Drivon School of Law,
and the San Joaquin County Office of Education Educational Foundation, in cooperation with the
Constitutional Rights Foundation.

In this true-to-life competition, high school teams debate fictitious cases before presiding superior court judges
and scoring attorneys. Cases involve contemporary issues and pre-trial arguments on the amendments to the
U.S. Constitution. Teams also may include courtroom artists and journalists.

In Mock Trial, students experience the excitement of working in teams, exchanging ideas, setting goals, and
examining issues while interacting with positive role models from the community. By studying the case and
preparing strategies and arguments for trial, students also develop presentation skills, analytic ability, and team
cooperation.

About the competition
Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of
individual and team events for which students prepare during the year. The competitions follow the format
of popular board games, TV shows, and athletic games. These challenging and motivational events are
distributed between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers,
and technology.
There is a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills, and
science applications. There are three levels of competition available to any San Joaquin County school, public
or private: Division A for grades 3-6; Division B for grades 6-9; and Division C for grades 9-12.
Entry is limited to two teams per school for each division. A fee of $200 per team for B/C and $150 per team
for A is required of each school to help defray competition costs.

Founded in 1957, San Joaquin County’s Outdoor School is one of the oldest, largest,
and most successful programs of its kind in California. Our mission is to encourage
children to experience a rich, science-based environment and learn to appreciate the
bounty and diversity of the earth by taking a responsible role in protecting our natural
resources. This exciting educational program for fifth- and sixth graders is often long 2021-2022
remembered as the highlight of a student’s elementary years.

Outdoor School provides an exciting avenue for kids to explore nature outside of the
classroom and brings to life concepts they are learning about in a brand new way. All activities and curriculum align
with the California State Science Standards and the program is fully certified by California Outdoor School Administrators
(COSA). The outdoor school is located in the coastal redwood forest only 12 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. With easy
access to diverse ecosystems and habitats, the redwood forest, beaches, tide pools, and dunes of the Central California
Coast provide a spectacular arena for study and exploration.

The San Joaquin County Outdoor Education Program is a five-day, four-night experience for fifth- and sixth grade students
from the county’s public, private, and parochial schools. During
the 2018-19 school year, the environmentally conscious program
accommodated over 4,600 campers and 900 visiting teachers and Contact us for more information

Computer science is in all types of items that we use every day. People often see computer science as
calculations and commands. In our coding camps students get to see computer science as so much more.
Students get to create a piano with play dough and circuits, engineer an arcade system in a maker space, or
design a smart fashion with programmable textiles. Camps range from elementary through high school and
cover languages from Scratch to Python. As students apply their knowledge in fun
and creative ways, computer science becomes more than an abstract concept and
moves to being a tool students use to contribute to the world around them.

                  Manteca
Durham Ferry has been an important site for the people of the San
Joaquin region. In the mid-1800s pioneers and freight wagons heading
to the southern gold mines used this area as a ferry crossing. Later it
was named South County Regional Park and then Durham Ferry State
Recreation Area. In 1997, when state and county funds didn’t suffice to
continue managing the park, the property was given to the San Joaquin
Office of Education to be used for educational purposes.

The site, located at 29393 S. Airport Way, Manteca, rests on a large bend of the San Joaquin River. The 240-
acre property includes nearly 80 acres of riparian forest on the riverside of the levy road. The site is a gem of
local biodiversity, home to many native plants, birds, mammals, and other wildlife. It sits on the Pacific Flyway, an
international route for migratory birds, and is near enough to San Joaquin National Wildlife Refuge and Caswell
State Park to have potential continuity with some of the wildlife populations at these sites.

The Durham Ferry Outdoor Education Center offers field trips for multiple grade bands.

MEANDER field trips are for students in grades 3 - 5. The field trip includes an hour guided hike along San
Joaquin River trails and grade-appropriate, inquiry-driven, hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering,
and math activities. Standards-based lessons are centered around life and earth science, ecology, natural and
cultural history, environmental literacy, engineering, and technology. Upon request, we will provide teachers with
a lesson sequence with pre- and post-field trip activities. We can accommodate up to three classes at a time. The
field trip cost is $300 per class for no more than 32 students.

BioBlitz field trips are for students in grades 6 - 12. Students will work in small groups to identify and record the
predominant species at the Durham Ferry Outdoor Education Center. Students will hike, use maps, datasheets,
and iPads to contribute their observations to the iNaturalist app and help build a database of the local species.
Field Trip cost: $300 for a class of no more than 32 students.

Let’s Play Outside summer camps
These summer day camps have multiple offerings throughout the summer. Campers in grades 4 - 7 will
participate in science activities and art. They will go on nature hikes to the San Joaquin river and deploy wildlife
cameras. Campers will practice archery, fishing, and other recreational activities. We make science fun!
