Message from the Superintendent James Mousalimas The San Joaquin County Office of Education (SJCOE) is proud to provide the community with the 2020-2021 Student Events Catalog. The outstanding activities and events on the following pages, such as the county and state spelling bees, mock trial competitions, and science Olympiads, are designed to support student learning, encourage excellence, and recognize achievement among our county’s third through 12th-grade students. Coordinated by the SJCOE’s Educational Services Division, San Joaquin County academic events are fun and unique educational opportunities that challenge students to think in complex ways and apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in an environment outside of the classroom. At the events, students represent their school and district at the county-level, and winners of these events often move on to represent the county at the state and national level. This experience, along with the knowledge and skills that students gain from participation, further prepares them for success in college and career. The SJCOE encourages all charter schools, parochial schools, private schools, public schools, and school districts located within San Joaquin County to take advantage of these activities and events that motivate student learning, promote teamwork, build school spirit, and celebrate education. It is with great pleasure that the SJCOE hosts these countywide activities and events. However, their success would not be possible without: • The support of our generous sponsors and our partnership with the San Joaquin County Office of Education Educational Foundation (SJCOEEF), county school districts, local businesses, and community organizations. • The volunteers who graciously donate their time and share their expertise and talents. • The educators and coaches who guide, train, and motivate students. • The families who promote student participation and encourage students to reach their goals by developing their abilities and pursuing their interests. • The students who proudly represent their school and district, challenge themselves, and spend countless hours studying, researching, and practicing to improve and showcase their skills. We enter this year of academic competitions and events with the same uncertainty all school-related activities must face during this pandemic and the ever-evolving circumstances it has created. Some events will not be possible this year. Others might look different or take place virtually. But there will still be opportunities for students to strive, compete, and have the student-event experience this year. Working alongside the educators, volunteers, and community partners -- we are determined to meet this challenge for the sake of our students. Sincerely, James A. Mousalimas County Superintendent of Schools

Durham Ferry Outdoor Education Center Durham Ferry Outdoor Education Center 29393 S. Airport Way Manteca Durham Ferry has been an important site for the people of the San Joaquin region. In the mid-1800s pioneers and freight wagons heading to the southern gold mines used this area as a ferry crossing. Later it was named South County Regional Park and then Durham Ferry State Recreation Area. In 1997, when state and county funds didn’t suffice to continue managing the park, the property was given to the San Joaquin Office of Education to be used for educational purposes. The site, located at 29393 S. Airport Way, Manteca, rests on a large bend of the San Joaquin River. The 240- acre property includes nearly 80 acres of riparian forest on the riverside of the levy road. The site is a gem of local biodiversity, home to many native plants, birds, mammals, and other wildlife. It sits on the Pacific Flyway, an international route for migratory birds, and is near enough to San Joaquin National Wildlife Refuge and Caswell State Park to have potential continuity with some of the wildlife populations at these sites. The Durham Ferry Outdoor Education Center offers field trips for multiple grade bands. MEANDER field trips are for students in grades 3 - 5. The field trip includes an hour guided hike along San Joaquin River trails and grade-appropriate, inquiry-driven, hands-on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math activities. Standards-based lessons are centered around life and earth science, ecology, natural and cultural history, environmental literacy, engineering, and technology. Upon request, we will provide teachers with a lesson sequence with pre- and post-field trip activities. We can accommodate up to three classes at a time. The field trip cost is $300 per class for no more than 32 students. BioBlitz field trips are for students in grades 6 - 12. Students will work in small groups to identify and record the predominant species at the Durham Ferry Outdoor Education Center. Students will hike, use maps, datasheets, and iPads to contribute their observations to the iNaturalist app and help build a database of the local species. Field Trip cost: $300 for a class of no more than 32 students. Let’s Play Outside summer camps These summer day camps have multiple offerings throughout the summer.
