We care for the poor and needy through service and charitable giving, through our Opportunity Shop run in partnership with the local Catholic and Uniting churches, and by supporting the work of Anglicare, The Brotherhood of St. Laurence and The Anglican Board of Mission. Our clergy regularly baptise new members of the church, preside at weddings and care for the grieving through our funeral ministry. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD First Lesson Acts 10:34-43 Read at 8am by Cindy Kalai and 10am by Andrew Ankers Then Peter began to speak to them: ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism 4
that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’ Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalter Psalm 118: 1-2, 14-24, s aid together at 8am and sung by the choir at 10am O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good: his mercy endures for ever. Let Israel now proclaim: that his mercy endures for ever. The Lord is my strength and my song: and has become my salvation. The sounds of joy and deliverance: are in the tents of the righteous. The right hand of the Lord does mighty things: the right hand of the Lord raises up. I shall not die but live: and proclaim the works of the Lord. The Lord has disciplined me hard: but he has not given me over to death. Open me the gates of righteousness: and I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. This is the gate of the Lord: the righteous shall enter it. 5
I will praise you, for you answered me: and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected: has become the head of the corner. This is the Lord’s doing: and it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made: let us rejoice and be glad in it. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, and now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Epistle 1 Corinthians 15. 19-26 Read at 8am by Lindsay Hosking and 10am by Judith Chapman I f for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please stand for the Gradual Hymn 6

The Holy Gospel according to St. John, Chapter 20, commencing at the first verse. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, ‘They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.’ Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping?’ She said to them, ‘They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.’ When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?’ Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, ‘Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.’ Jesus said to her, ‘Mary!’ She turned and said to him in Hebrew, ‘Rabbouni!’ (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, ‘Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, “I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.” ’ Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, ‘I have seen the Lord’; and she told them that he had said these things to her. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 8
The Easter Sermon The Vicar, The Revd. Dr. Peter A. French allelujah’ from Messiah Anthem ‘H Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) THE REAFFIRMATION OF BAPTISMAL VOWS The priest addresses the congregation and invites all present to stand and renew their baptismal vows The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; you nourish and sustain all living things. Thanks be to God. We give your thanks for your Son Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing with the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God. We give you thanks that through the deep waters of death, Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. Thanks be to God. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who forms us in the likeness of Christ and leads us to proclaim your kingdom. Thanks be to God. And now we give you thanks that we are made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing, that this water may be a sign of our new birth in Baptism. May we continue forever in Jesus Christ our Lord, in the unity of the Spirit, now and forever. Amen. 9
Dear friends, through the paschal mystery we have been buried with Christ in his baptism, so that we may rise with him to new life. Now that our Lenten observance is ended, let us reaffirm the promises we made in baptism. Do you turn to Christ? I do. Do you repent of your sins? I do. Do you renounce all that is evil? I do. I ask you now to reaffirm as yours the faith of the Church. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith. We believe in one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Will you each, by God's grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life's end? I will, with God's help. God our creator, Rock of our salvation, has given us new birth by water and the Spirit, and forgiven our sins through Jesus Christ our Lord. May God keep us faithful to our calling now and for ever. Amen. 10
Holy water is now sprinkled over the people as a sign of God’s blessing in baptism and the renewal of our baptismal vows The Prayers of the People kneeling The prayers are lead at 8am by Vivienne Randall and at 10am by David Aspin At 10am the prayers end with: Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord: And + let light perpetual shine upon them. Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. Grant that what we have asked in faith, we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Greeting of Peace standing Christ is risen. Alleluia! He is risen indeed. Alleluia! The peace of the risen Lord be always with you. And also with you. All share with each other the sign of peace, customarily shaking hands with those around them and saying, ‘Peace be with you.’ The Parish Notices please be seated. The parish notices are given by the Vicar. The Offertory During the singing of the next hymn, an offering will be taken for the life and ministry of St. John’s church. Please do give generously, this church is entirely dependent upon the gifts of all its members and friends for its presence and life. 11
Offertory Hymn ‘Love’s redeeming work is done’ Love's redeeming work is done; fought the fight, the battle won: lo, our Sun's eclipse is o'er, lo, he sets in blood no more. Vain the stone, the watch, the seal; Christ has burst the gates of hell; death in vain forbids his rise; Christ has opened paradise. Lives again our glorious King; where, O death, is now thy sting? dying once, he all doth save; where thy victory, O grave? Soar we now where Christ has led, following our exalted Head; made like him, like him we rise; ours the cross, the grave, the skies. Hail the Lord of earth and heaven! Praise to thee by both be given: thee we greet triumphant now; hail, the Resurrection Thou! Charles Wesley (1707-1788) Receiving the Offertory Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. Blessed be God for ever. 12
THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, everliving God. We give you thanks and praise for your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, who by the power of your Spirit was born of Mary and lived as one of us. He is the true Paschal Lamb who was offered for us and has taken away the sin of the world. And now we give you thanks that you raised him in triumph from the dead. By his death, he has destroyed death and by his rising to life again has restored us to eternal life. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Lord God, you are the most holy one, enthroned in splendour and light, yet in the coming of your Son Jesus Christ you reveal the power of your love made perfect in our human weakness. Embracing our humanity, Jesus showed us the way of salvation; loving us to the end, he gave himself to death for us; dying for his own, he set us free from the bonds of sin, that we might rise and reign with him in glory. On the night he gave up himself for us all he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: ‘Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.’ In the same way, after supper he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: ‘Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new 13
covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’ Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Therefore we proclaim the death that he suffered on the cross, we celebrate his resurrection, his bursting from the tomb, we rejoice that he reigns at your right hand on high and we long for his coming in glory. As we recall the one, perfect sacrifice of our redemption, Father, by your Holy Spirit let these gifts of your creation be to us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ; form us into the likeness of Christ and make us a perfect offering in your sight. Look with favour on your people and in your mercy hear the cry of our hearts. Bless the earth, heal the sick, let the oppressed go free and fill your Church with power from on high. Gather your people from the ends of the earth to feast with all your saints at the table in your kingdom, where the new creation is brought to perfection in Jesus Christ our Lord; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory be yours, almighty Father, for ever and ever. Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of Bread We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. We who are many are one body, for we all share in the one bread. 14
Agnus Dei Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer of the world, grant us your peace. Invitation to Communion Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. Administration of Holy Communion All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you do not wish to receive communion and would like to receive a blessing, please come forward and indicate your desire to do so by keeping your arms behind your back. Communion Anthems sung by the choir ‘O death’ & ‘B ut thanks be to God,’ from Messiah Georg Friedrich Händel (1685-1759) O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 ‘Come, ye faithful’ Reginald Sparshatt Thatcher (1888–1957) 1. Come, ye faithful, raise the strain 3. Now the queen of seasons, bright of triumphant gladness; with the day of splendor, God hath brought his Israel with the royal feast of feasts, into joy from sadness; comes its joy to render; loosed from Pharaoh's bitter yoke comes to glad Jerusalem, Jacob's sons and daughters; who with true affection led them with unmoistened foot welcomes in unwearied strains through the Red Sea waters. Jesus' resurrection. 2. 'Tis the spring of souls today; 4. Neither might the gates of death, Christ hath burst his prison, nor the tomb's dark portal, and from three days' sleep in death nor the watchers, nor the seal as a sun hath risen; hold thee as a mortal: all the winter of our sins, but today amidst thine own long and dark, is flying thou didst stand, bestowing from his light, to whom we give thine own peace, which evermore laud and praise undying. passeth human knowing. Text St. John of Damascus, Translation John Mason Neale 15
Post Communion Prayers kneeling God of Life, who for our redemption gave your only-begotten Son to death on the cross, and by his glorious resurrection have delivered us from the power of our enemy: grant us so to die daily to sin, that we may evermore live with him in the joy of his risen life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Father, we offer ourselves to you as a living sacrifice, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out in the power of your Spirit, to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen. Post-Communion Hymn ‘Thine be the glory’ Thine be the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son: endless is the vict'ry thou o’er death hast won; angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away, kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay. Thine be the glory, risen, conqu'ring Son; endless is the vict'ry thou o’er death hast won. Lo! Jesus meets thee, risen from the tomb; lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom; let the church with gladness, hymns of triumph sing, for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting. Refrain No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of life; life is naught without thee: aid us in our strife; make us more than conqu'rors, thro' thy deathless love; bring us safe thro' Jordan to thy home above.
