Map Doors Open Day is a celebration of Stirling’s built heritage, both old and new, and we hope you enjoy the many wonderful buildings which are opening their doors for us this year and the exciting events organised for Archaeology Month. It’s all completely for free! Look out for the balloons / blue banners on participating buildings. Doors Open Days and Scottish Archaeology Month (both supported by Historic Environment Scotland www.historicenvironment.scot), are Stirling’s contribution to European Heritage Days, which take place throughout Europe each September. European Heritage Days have been happening annually since 1999, they were launched by the Council of Europe in 1991 and are now run by the Council of Europe and the European Commission. This year hundreds of thousands of people throughout the signatory States of the European Cultural Convention will celebrate Europe’s cultural heritage. Doors Open Days and Archaeology Month, as part of European Heritage Days, highlight local skills and traditions, the history of an area, architecture and works of art, but the broader aim is to bring citizens together in harmony even though there are differences in cultures and languages. Tuesday 11th September, 12.00noon - 2.00pm Explore The Battle of Stirling Bridge on the Anniversary of Wallace’s most famous victory, with Dr Murray Cook, Stirling Council’s Archaeologist. Back Walk Sculptures Friday 14th September, 1.00 - 3.00pm Join Ranger Claire Bird in exploring the wonderful sculptures on the Back Walk from the Wolf that helped us defy the Vikings to Scotland’s first female archaeologist and much, much more! Balfron Cemetery Friday 14th September, 11.00am - 12.00noon From the Abbot of Innchaffrey to Waterloo and Greek Thompson, Balfron is one of Stirling’s most historic and often overlooked cemeteries. A guided tour of the lovely little gem by the wonderful Pat Thompson, doyenne of all things Balfronny! Duration 1 hour, easy going and relaxed. 6

Walking Tours with Stirling City Heritage Trust – John Allan ‘A Man of Original Ideas’ Tuesday 11th September, 6.00 – 7.00pm This walking tour celebrates the work of local Victorian architect, John Allan. The walk will take us through Stirling city centre and King’s Park to visit a number of John Allan’s most important buildings and discuss the work and life of this most extraordinary man who contributed so significantly to the townscape of Stirling. He left an incredible legacy of tenements, grand villas and architecturally distinctive commercial buildings. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the walk. Booking required for tours. Walking Tours with Stirling City Heritage Trust – King Street ‘A Place of Quality’ Thursday 13th September: 6.00 – 7.00pm meeting point: outside King Street entrance to Stirling Arcade This walking tour celebrates the architectural heritage of King Street. Originally the royal burgh’s ‘High Gait’ the street was transformed in the nineteenth century to be the jewel in Stirling’s commercial crown with banks, large commercial retailers and well-known hotels. In support of the recent booklet and exhibition by Stirling City Heritage Trust, this walk in King Street will provide an insight into the architectural legacy of this period. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the walk. Booking required for tours. Allan’s Primary School Bastion Saturday 15th September, 12.00 – 4.00pm 29 Spittal Street, Stirling FK8 1DU This beehive bastion on the Old Town Wall, behind Allan’s Primary School, dates from the 1500’s. It later served as a gunpowder store, was converted into a Doocot sometime in the 1700’s and, more recently, was renovated in 2003. The Old Town Wall itself is constructed directly onto the rock which, in many places throughout the Old Town, is only just below the ground surface. Three gun loops are visible from the south side of the wall. Take this rare opportunity to come along and see inside and find out a bit more about this little building. Limited disabled access. 8

Blair Drummond House Friday 14th September, 1.00 - 3.00pm Cuthil Brae, by Stirling, FK9 4UT Take the access marked “Cuthil Brae”, near Kincardine parish church, off the A84 between Stirling and Doune. This amazing Category B Listed baronial mansion dates from 1868-72 and was designed by J C Walker. It is situated within its own attractive parklands which now overlook the adjacent safari park. Come and meet some of the people who live and work here, ask questions and see what a special place this is. Visitors can look around the house themselves or join one of the regular guided tours of the house and grounds - tours will last approximately 30 minutes. Children and families are most welcome and children can enjoy the new activity trail and flying fox! Teas, coffees and delicious home baking will be available. The InTouch workshop will be open for visitors to buy items made by our residents and day students with funds from this going to Camphill Blair Drummond Sport and Recreation centre appeal. Iris Murdoch Building Saturday 15th September, 10.00am – 2.00pm University of Stirling, Stirling FK9 4LA The Iris Murdoch Building is the home of the Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC) at the University of Stirling and is an international centre of excellence whose purpose is to improve lives for people living with dementia, promote creating dementia friendly communities and improving policy and practice. It was officially opened in March 2003 by Dame Judi Dench, an advocate for improving lives for people with dementia. Dame Iris Murdoch was an Irish novelist and philosopher, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1997. Judi Dench and Kate Winslet both portrayed Iris Murdoch within the movie ‘Iris’. This was the first dementia friendly public building in the UK and still attracts visitors from around the world. It houses the Design and Technology Suite. The Suite provides examples for those looking to visually understand how they can make space more supportive for someone living with dementia. The principles for dementia design remain the same, which is one reason why the building is so popular with visitors. Come along to visit the Iris Murdoch Building during Doors Open 2018 and you will be able to: • take a handset tour of the Design & Technology Suite, tour duration approx. 30 mins. Please visit the reception desk on arrival for a tour handset (handsets only available in English). • view the artwork on display within the gallery • access the DSDC publications and information library • take a walk in the DSDC’s dementia friendly garden and take in the breath-taking views over Airthrey Loch towards the castle. Disabled access – the building is fully accessible by wheelchair but entrance doors are not automatic opening - staff will be able to assist if required. 10
Doors Open Day 2018 12. St Mary’s Scottish Episcopal Church Saturday 15th September, 10.00am – 4.00pm Main Street, Aberfoyle FK8 3UJ This Gothic Arts and Crafts simple style church building, designed by James Miller and constructed by Hugh Kennedy, dates from 1892-3 and is Category C Listed. It was constructed by the quarry workers from the Aberfoyle slate quarry in their own time and for no pay. The church’s first congregation included many of these quarry workers who had come from Ballachulish and the Western Isles, a staunchly Episcopalian area of Argyll, who had settled in Aberfoyle to work in quarries here. Disabled access. 13. Stirling Community Fire Station Saturday 15th September, 11.00am – 3.00pm Raploch Road, Stirling FK8 1TH Always one of the most popular Doors Open Days attractions! Visitors can take a tour, find out about all the specialist firefighting equipment, see the training facilities, ask questions and learn about Community Safety and Home Fire Safety Visits. The station will be operational throughout and Doors Open Days and visitors might get a safe opportunity to watch the fire personnel responding to an incident. In the event of any emergency Specialist Fire Safety Staff will remain at the station with visitors. Disabled access to the yard. 11
Doors Open Day 2018 14. Stirling Sheriff Court Saturday 15th September 10.00 – 4.00pm (last tour 3.00pm) Viewfield Place, Stirling FK8 1NH An opportunity to visit the cells! Popular with all the family, the Category B Listed Sheriff Court is not to be missed. Originally designed by Thomas Brown in 1864 then modified by Wardrop and Reid in 1874-76. Court Room One contains an impressive hammer-beam roof, original seating and hooded canopy above the judge’s bench. Tours of the court rooms and cell area will last approximately one hour and will take place every half hour. This building is very popular and the tours can be extremely busy, please be aware that you may have to queue and that tours may be closed if maximum numbers are reached. Disabled access. 12

Stirling Tolbooth Saturday 15th September 10.00 – 4.00pm Jail Wynd, Stirling FK8 1DE Located within the heart of Stirling’s Old Town and now a thriving Arts and Music Venue, the Tolbooth has been a workhouse, wartime army recruitment post, town hall, a courthouse and a jail and is the site of the last ever execution in Stirling. Visitors are welcome to come in and wander around this Category A Listed building or can advance book a place on a tour of the building. Tickets for guided tours need to be booked in advance via the Tolbooth Box Office on 01786 274 000 or Albert Hall Box Office 01786 473 544. Tours will begin at 11.00 & 1.00, for up to 20 people, and will last approximately an hour. Limited disabled access – to all floors and public areas via lift but the guided tours include staircases and narrow doorways and therefore may not be suitable for everyone. 13

The Engine Shed Saturday 15th September 10.00am – 4.00pm Forthside Way, Stirling FK8 1QZ This Buildings Through Time 10.00am – 4.00pm Join us at the Engine Shed this Doors Open Days in Stirling to construct your own building out of paper. This is a drop-in workshop and is suitable for age 5+, Parental/guardian supervision is required for the duration of the workshop. Conservation Science 10.30am – 1.00pm This Doors Open Days in Stirling join a member of Historic Environment Scotland’s Conservation Science team and explore the many techniques used to conserve our built environment. During your visit you will hear about the scientific analysis of building materials and how this helps us to conserve more than 300 properties in Historic Environment Scotland’s care. Suitable for all ages. 14
Doors Open Day 2018 Digital Documentation 1.30 – 4.00pm Historic Environment Scotland’s Digital Documentation team uses cutting edge digital technologies to document our heritage in 3D. The data from digital heritage projects like the Scottish Ten and Rae Project continues to be used to inform conservation, heritage management and interpretation. Join a member of the team to hear more about their work and to see how they conserve our heritage. Suitable for all ages. Disabled access. Doors Open Day Photo Competition Stirling is a city full of rich history, and its story is reflected in its architecture. From the changing face of our high streets, to some of Scotland’s most renowned architects and royal residences, Stirling’s buildings tell the exciting stories of the city itself. For Stirling Doors Open Days, the Engine Shed, part of Historic Environment Scotland (HES), are running a photography competition. Participants should submit a photo of their favourite building in Stirling to be in with a chance to win a day out at Stirling Castle, including lunch for 4 people (up to a value of £50). The top entries will be showcased at an exhibition at the Engine Shed. All entries must be submitted to technicaleducation@hes.scot, with the subject line ‘Photo Competition’ and received by no later than Monday 17 September. All entries for Stirling Doors Open Day photo competition which are displayed at the Engine Shed will be used solely for the purposes of the exhibition. Permission will be required from the copyright holder to use any of the photographs submitted for the competition for any other purpose. Should any photographs submitted for the competition feature people, photographers will have obtained permission to take and use these photographs for the competition. 15

Doors Open Day 2018 17. Walking the Marches Saturday 15th September 11.00am – 1.00pm Old Municipal Buildings, 8-10 Corn Exchange Road, Stirling FK8 2HU Come along and help celebrate our heritage, taking part in the 800-year-old tradition of inspecting Stirling’s city boundaries. It promises to be a lively procession complete with our very own Stirling Bellman, Pipe Bands and medieval time travellers. The Walking of the Marches will start and finish at the Rotunda at the bottom of King Street, with the Albert Halls, Smith Art Gallery and Museum, Cowane’s hospital and the Holy Rude as key stopping points along the way and will last around 90 minutes. Come along and join us, bring a banner if you like! There will be a lunch in the Golden Lion Hotel c1.30pm for those who would like to continue the celebration and hear more about Stirling’s past, present and future. Logie Old Kirk Saturday 15th September 10.00am - 4.00pm Sunday 16th September 2.00 – 5.00pm Logie Old Kirk, FK9 4LB Logie Old Kirk has been a centre of Christianity for over 1500 years: explore its history with the Volunteers of the Logie Old Graveyard Group. Bannockburn House Saturday 15th September : tours start 10.30am, 12.30, 2.30pm Sunday 16th September: tours start 10.30am, 12.30, 2.30pm Bannockburn FK7 8EY Bannockburn House is Category A Listed and has survived largely unchanged since the 17th century, apart from a Victorian extension. After over 50 years of dormancy the house and surrounding gardens and grounds were bought by the local community in December 2017 - with help from public donations and grants from organisations including Stirling Council and the Scottish Land Fund. A dedicated group of volunteers is now breathing new life into the house and grounds with the aim of creating a community hub providing a range of activities and resources to benefit future generations. Come and discover the house’s connections to centuries of history, and its links to the worldwide tartan trade. Crafts, souvenirs and snacks will be available – sorry, cards not yet accepted. Carbeth Hutters Community Company Saturday 15th September: 1.00 – 2.30pm Sunday 16th September: 1.00 – 2.30pm Stockiemuir Rd., Carbeth G63 9AY Carbeth is a collection of characterful, off-grid huts set within the designed landscape of the Carbeth Estate. The huts date back to the time of the First World War and some families still have huts there and have seen many generations enjoy visiting the area. Come along and take a tour of the Carbeth Estate and learn about the history, aims and ethos of the community. Meet before 1.00pm at the Community Hut (take the access road immediately to the left of the old Carbeth Inn, first right and it’s the first building on the right) for a 1.00pm start. Good walking boots are essential and rainwear is an advisable option. Booking essential and places are limited. Church of the Holy Rude Saturday 15th September: 11.00am – 4.00pm Sunday 16th September: 11.00am – 4.00pm St John Street, Stirling FK8 1ED The iconic Holy Rude at Stirling’s Top of the Town is one of Scotland’s most important medieval churches. This Category A Listed building dates from 1407 and has particularly impressive interior and stained glass windows. See if you can find the inscription in the floor that marks the place where King James VI was crowned in 1567. The Top of the Town graveyards are full of interesting headstones and sculptures and very characterful, definitely worth visiting when you’re at the Holy Rude and Cowane’s Hospital. There will be a King James Bible exhibition. Walk Round Guides of Significant Features in the church will be available to visitors. Disabled access. 21
Doors Open Day 2018 22. Cowane’s Hospital Saturday 15th September: 10.00am – 4.00pm Sunday 16th September: 12.00 – 4.00pm 49 St John Street, Stirling FK8 1ED This Category A Listed hospital building at the Top of the Town was designed by John Mylne in 1639 and founded by John Cowane for poor members of the local Merchant Guild. Originally two storeys inside it was altered in 1852 to form a guildhall with balcony, gallery and elongated windows in the main hall. The Top of the Town graveyards are full of interesting headstones and sculptures and very characterful, definitely worth visiting when you’re at the Cowane’s Hospital and the Holy Rude. The hospital and café will be open for visitors to wander round and have a snack. Lots to see and a lovely place to sit outside or nearby, especially on a nice day. Disabled access to ground floor. 22

Holy Trinity Scottish Episcopal Church Saturday 15th September: 10.00am – 4.00pm Sunday 16th September: 1.00 – 4.00 pm Albert Place, Stirling FK8 2RG On Sunday 16th only - guided tours will be available to visitors. Tour times are not fixed and will be offered to visitors upon arrival, tour duration is approximately 30mins. This Category A Listed church was consecrated on 12 September 1878 and is thus celebrating its 140th Anniversary. It was designed by one of Scotland’s most prolific architects, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. In 1920 Sir Robert Lorimer was commissioned to create a Memorial Chapel within the church to commemorate the dead of World War I. This church has many special interior features, including fine stained glass windows, one of which was transferred from the church’s previous building in Barnton Street. There will be a small display on the life of St Ninian and, as well as the usual services, Choral Evensong on 16th September. Kippen Parish Church Saturday 15th September: 2.00 – 5.00pm Sunday 16th September: 2.00 – 5.00pm Fore Road, Kippen FK8 3D The beautiful village of Kippen overlooks the Carse of Stirling and has amazing views across to the Trossachs. The Category B Listed Kippen Parish Church dates from 1825, was enlarged in 1928 and was first mentioned in public records in the 1300s. This is a well-loved for church building which contains a stunning wealth of arts and craftsmanship on the inside and it is well worth the trip to Kippen to see. Disabled access. 25. Kippen Smiddy Saturday 15th September: 2.00 – 5.00pm Sunday 16th September: 2.00 – 5.00pm Kippen Cross, Rennie’s Loan, Kippen FK8 3DX Kippen Smiddy is located within a particularly characterful range of buildings in one of the prettiest places in the Stirling Council area. The building dates from the late 1700s, it is situated within the Kippen Conservation Area and is Category C Listed. It was used by the Rennie family as a blacksmiths for nearly 200 years until the mid-1980s. It is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. Don’t miss this chance to visit this authentic Smiddy building. Limited disabled access. 24

Leighton Library Saturday 15th September: 11.00am – 3.00pm Sunday 16th September: 11.00am – 3.00pm The Cross, Dunblane FK15 0QA Come and visit Scotland’s oldest purpose-built private library, prominently located within the centre of the historic Cathedral City of Dunblane and close to the Golden Post-box. This impressive Category A Listed traditional building is over 300 years old, it is particularly characterful form the exterior and the well preserved interior retains furnishings as well as the library’s collection of books. The friendly volunteers will be pleased to tell you more about the history of this wonderful building. Unfortunately no disabled access due to forestairs. 27. Mugdock Castle Saturday 15th September: 2.00 – 5.00pm Sunday 16th September: 2.00 – 5.00pm Mugdock Country Park, Craigallian Road, Milngavie G62 8EL Mugdock Castle is situated within the scenic Mugdock Country Park, which is one of Scotland’s most popular visitor attractions. This Scheduled Ancient Monument dates back to the 1300’s and retains its original four-storey south-west tower mostly intact. Come and see inside the Castle tower and climb the stairs to the top and enjoy the fantastic views from the parapet walk over Mugdock Country Park and beyond. Disabled access to grounds, there is no access to tower. 25
Doors Open Day 2018 28. Old Auchentroig Saturday 15th September: tour times will be shared upon booking your place. Sunday 16th September: tour times will be shared upon booking your place. Buchlyvie, Stirling FK8 3PB This is a very rare opportunity for a limited number of visitors to book your place on a tour of this fantastic little house (tour duration will be approximately 30 mins). Old Auchentroig is more than another building associated with Rob Roy MacGregor and has been described as ‘a very early artisan interpretation of the symmetrical classicism which succeeded 17th century Renaissance styles. It is of exceptional significance in understanding the development of Scottish vernacular architecture’. Dated 1702 this Category A Listed Laird’s house was restored as part of the National Trust for Scotland’s Little Houses Improvement Scheme in 1999. It retains its date-stone, with coat of arms above, and is unusually intact for a building of this age and retains a high proportion of its original fabric (including practically its entire roof structure). Doors Open Day 2018 29. St Columba’s Church Saturday 15th September: 10.00am – 4.00pm Sunday 16th September: 2.00 – 4.00pm 2 Park Terrace, Stirling FK8 2NA Not to be missed! St Columba’s is a prominent and building within King’s Park, dating from 1902 it is Category B Listed and surely one of the most utilised church buildings within the Stirling Council area. Just for Doors Open Days the bell tower will be open to those visitors brave, able and fit enough for the climb! Access is upstairs from the main vestibule, then up a steep, narrow set of stairs before a very steep and long ladder to the top. Sensible clothing is essential and all safety procedures must be followed. Make sure you don’t miss the coffee morning on Saturday! Disabled access but not to tower - due to steps and ladders. 27

Stirling Civic Trust Saturday 15th September: 10.00am – 4.00pm Sunday 16th September: 12.00 – 4.00pm at Cowane’s Hospital, 49 St John St., Stirling FK8 1ED Civic Trusts were established in Scotland in 1967, following an English lead in 1957, and Stirling Civic Trust started in 1977. At this time a huge building program was in place after the Second World War and some buildings of historic interest were being demolished to make way for new build. The remit for the Trusts was to monitor planning applications to ensure that wherever possible, buildings of heritage interest and significance were preserved and/or restored. The key aims of Stirling Civic Trust are to: encourage high standards of architecture, planning and landscape design in the City of Stirling and its surroundings and; to encourage the preservation of existing features of architectural or historic interest and the preservation, development and improvement of features of general public amenity. Come along to Cowane’s Hospital to meet members and find out more about what they do and how you could become involved to help make Stirling City and its surroundings a better place to live and work. Stirling Council Archives Saturday 15th September 12.00 noon - 4.00pm Sunday 16th September 12.00 noon - 4.00pm at Cowane’s Hospital, 49 St John St., Stirling FK8 1ED If you’re interested in your family history, history of your house, any another building or the past in general within the Stirling Council area then come along to Cowane’s Hospital and speak to the staff from our Local Archives Team. Our knowledgeable Team will have exhibition boards displaying some of the many highlights from their extensive collection and will be happy to chat with you about what information they hold and how they can help you with your project. Archives is an invaluable resource if you’re interested in the past and want to know more - don’t miss it! Disabled access to ground floor. 29

Stirling Old High School Observatory & Telescope Saturday 15th September 7.00 - 9.30pm (evening only) Sunday 16th September 7.00 - 9.30pm (evening only) Stirling Highland Hotel, Spittal Street, Stirling FK8 1DU Take your opportunity to see the moon, and more, through the 129 year-old Newtonian reflecting telescope within the copper-domed Observatory at the Category A Listed Stirling Highland Hotel. This impressive building used to be Stirling High School building and was converted into an hotel in 1990. Telescope viewing will be provided by Stirling Astronomical Society members. Group tours of up to 10 people will last approximately 30 minutes. This is a very popular event so you may have to queue but the hotel has kindly provided a room where you can watch a digital presentation while you wait. To avoid everyone arriving at the same time, if your party doesn’t have children please come after 8pm. No disabled access to Observatory – due to the two flight spiral staircase but those unable to climb the stairs can enjoy the digital presentation. 30

Stirling Youth Hostel Saturday 15th September 10.00am - 4.00pm Sunday 16th September 10.00am - 4.00pm St John Street, Stirling FK8 1EA Come and explore this Category B Listed Building and one of the most popular youth hostels in Scotland. The original building, Erskine Marykirk Church, dated from 1824 but was almost completely destroyed in a fire and only the front façade now remains of the original building. Popular with visitors from around the world, it’s a great base from which to discover the Stirling area, for more information visit http://www.syha.org.uk/ Limited disabled access. 34. Lecropt Kirk Sunday 16th September 1.30 - 4.00pm Dunblane Road, Bridge of Allan FK9 4NB This landmark church building can just be seen above the tree tops from the M9 between Stirling and Dunblane. Located close to Bridge of Allan and set on the edge of a woodland, it is classified within the highest Category of Listing. This is an outstanding building to visit, inside and out, but especially if you are following the current trend of animals in churches. Come on in and enjoy this peaceful church building and see just how beautiful some of the decoration is. Disabled access. 31

St Andrew’s Scottish Episcopal Church Sunday 16th September 2.00 - 4.00pm Leny Road, Callander FK17 8AL Set within the sunny village of Callander this particularly attractive Gothic church is Category B Listed and was built by the resident stone mason from Balquhidder. The building dates from 1857 and is cruciform in plan with a later 19th century half-octagon plan sanctuary. Along with St Mary’s, Aberfoyle, St Andrew’s is one of the most westerly parishes of Diocese of St Andrew’s, Dunkeld and Dunblane. Disabled access. 32
