LETTER FROM REV. CANON JUDITH WILSON Ring out the old, ring in the new…is one of the old traditional New Year greetings. I think most of us this year will be glad to ring out the old year 2020. It was a challenging year. Our world was turned upside down and we all had to find new ways of coping with the stress and the changes involved in the Coronavirus pandemic with lockdown, social restrictions and job uncertainties. But life on planet earth has always been like this. Throughout history there have been similar times of plague, famine, disaster, wars and loss, and each generation has had to learn how to live and respond to whatever happens. So now we welcome January and 2021, the new year ahead. Once again, we can ring in the new. There are still many challenges and changes until we can experience something of what we call ‘normal life’, but it is a new start. There is the hope of different types of vaccine to stop the spread of the disease and to protect us. The days are slowly beginning to get longer. The first snowdrops will soon be pushing their heads out of the dark earth. Renewal and new life will surely come, just as it has in years gone by. Perhaps we can begin the new year with hope, kindness, and courage. Hope enables us to face the future - it encourages us to keep on, keeping on. Hope shines in hearts like light in darkness and helps us trust that the future will bring better days. We have seen much kindness in our communities in this last year. The lonely befriended with phone calls, facetime, socially distanced meetings and even emails. Those struggling have found gifts of groceries and basic necessities to help them through. So many simple, kind words have made a difference to so many lives. In this new year, may we continue to find ways to act with kindness and generosity. It is not what we have, but how we use it, and we can all share with one another. The other thing that we need is courage…courage to go on when things are difficult or dangerous…courage to step out to new challenges or to changes…courage to go on loving and caring and giving… None of us knows what 2021 will hold for us, but we do not have to face it alone. God’s promise in Jeremiah tells us…” I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans for your welfare and not for harm, plans for a hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11) Because God loves us, we can trust him to care for us in all the unknowns that we face, so let us set out into 2021 with faith, hope, love, and courage, trusting in God’s goodness in all his plans for us. May God give us all a blessed and peace filled new year. Judith Blofield News January 2021 Page 4
A MESSAGE FROM REV. KEVIN BILLSON I am very pleased to be able to resume my duties as Rector from the 22nd December. I have had a very good outcome from my recent surgery and recuperation has gone well, though I will need to take things steadily for a time. I would like to thank everyone for the many good wishes and cards I have received and especially for your prayers. Thank you also to all who have sustained the ministry of our benefice churches during my absence both in planning and leading worship. God’s goodness and grace has abounded, and I am grateful. Rev Kevin BLOFIELD CHURCH, HEMBLINGTON & NORTH BURLINGHAM – caring for our church family Looking after our church family is very important to us, particularly during this difficult time when many of you have been shielding for many weeks or are worried about going out where it all feels slightly strange. Our churches are open for private prayer as well as our services on Sundays, but many people are still shielding and we want to make sure we keep in touch by phone, with a socially distanced visit outdoors, or by delivering a printed service to you if you do not use computers. If you or someone you know needs support, would like a regular phone call, or who has something special to celebrate, please let one of the Ministry Team or one of the Churchwardens know so that we can make contact. [The contact numbers can be found on page 3 of this magazine] BBC NEWS ARTICLE On BBC news, in the middle of December, you may have seen an inspiring, yet at times a heart-rending story, of the work of two Christian ministers amongst some very needy people in one of the most deprived areas of our country. The BBC has also featured a background news article to one of the ministers on its web pages and his story is nothing short of miraculous. You can read it here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-55273677 Blofield News January 2021 Page 5

There are some questions you may be asking: Covid safe-guarding measures in place. If Government advice allows, the worship in the Benefice will continue throughout the month of January with suitable Covid precautions in place and will follow the guidance of the Church of England. In particular, it is necessary to wear an appropriate face covering at all services unless a person has a medical exemption. Hand sanitising stations are available at all three churches and everyone is expected to follow the guidance on social distancing. There is a limit to the number of pews that are in use. It is now possible to check into Blofield, Hemblington & North Burlingham churches by scanning an official NHS QR code for those who have the app on their phones, otherwise you will be asked to leave your contact details for contact tracing if it became necessary. Orders of service are circulated prior to the service by email to those whose email address we have, and there are always copies available at the church. Unfortunately, it is still not possible for there to be congregational singing, but suitable music is usually included in the services. If another government lockdown is announced that prevents worship in church buildings, alternative provisions will be made and communicated by email and notices wherever possible. What about our online services? Online services will resume for the month of January at 11.00 am on Sunday. For details of how to view this service, search for ‘Blofield Church’ in YouTube. Also, an email link to the service will be provided before each Sunday. Please contact a churchwarden if you want to be added to the list which contains the link and which is circulated each week. What about collections and giving to our churches? We are grateful that many people have continued with their planned giving and regular donations, though, I’m sure you are aware that there is a considerable strain on each church’s finances at the present time. If at all possible, please consider giving by online donations, by BACS or by standing order. Christmas Boxes From Blofield, Hemblington North Burlingham Churches Dear Friends, Compassion and Love through Giving On behalf of the food bank and Salvation Army at Gorleston can I just say how overwhelmed I am, and they are, with the generosity of so many people who made up gift boxes. In the end we must have had over sixty boxes and that will be a lot of happy faces on Christmas Day. The Food Bank has been particularly busy, as you might imagine. We hear on the news of businesses failing and jobs lost: the results of this downturn in our economy are apparent as the numbers of people seeking help rises. Volunteers at the food bank have been preparing nearly 80 boxes of food per week, some food boxes could be supporting a family of five or six. They are trying to give each recipient a taste of Christmas too, which is where your boxes have made such a difference. So, thank you once again and a Happy Christmas. BLOFIELD CHURCH ‘Play Church’ Toddler Group at Blofield Church To all those parents and grandparents who hoped ‘Play Church’ would be open again, we’re really sorry to say that at the present time this is not possible due to the Coronavirus restrictions. The guidance from the Government and the Church of England states: ‘The restarting of parent and toddler groups is only permissible as a support group and not a social gathering.’ Toddler groups are all about sharing, singing, moving, playing, making friends and socialising. The hope is that Spring will bring us the chance to do all of these things again. BLOFIELD CHURCH FOODBANK AND CARE IN THE COMMUNITY We hear daily about the need for food donations for those who have lost jobs or finding the necessity of providing meals and essential toiletries very difficult during the pandemic and the response from people in our Benefice has been outstanding. Our basket that was once filled weekly, is now overflowing with groceries, luxury Christmas items and toiletries three times each week. There have been donations from the W I, Sea Scouts and even local football clubs. I’ve even had a call to collect a sack of potatoes and had bags of food delivered to our home. An enormous thank you to everyone who continues to donate so generously to the Food Bank at Blofield Church. This is desperately needed by many vulnerable people in the city and it has also led to us being able to support some local families. There is a basket for non-perishable food items and toiletries in the church porch. This is collected most days and delivered to the collection point in Norwich. A QUIZ FOR WINTER EVENINGS Leave it lying around on the kitchen table, by the TV or on your desk. The family can help fill in answers and, maybe, enjoy the £20 prize! You have until January 11th to puzzle over it. A light hearted quiz for you, your family & friends to enjoy. Quiz £2 ~ prize £20. Proceeds to Blofield Church. Available at Blofield Church when there are services and from the side porch at The White House, The Street, Blofield. Barbara Pilch Blofield News January 2021 Page 9

The much-loved national treasure – who for many years took centre stage in the Natural History Museum’s Hinzte Hall before embarking on his current UK tour. He had been due to go on display in Norwich Cathedral in Summer 2020 but his visit was rescheduled to: January to March 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Norwich Cathedral is now looking forward to welcoming Dippy in summer 2021 and the new dates for the exhibition will be announced in the coming months. Norwich Cathedral’s centuries-old architecture will provide a stunning backdrop for the famous 26-metre long (85ft) dinosaur on the final stop in his travels. The historic landmark is also the only Cathedral on Dippy’s eight- venue tour. Throughout the whole of Dippy’s visit, Norwich Cathedral’s regular rhythm of worship will continue as normal. Visitors will also be able to enjoy exploring the Cathedral’s many highlights, including its beautiful cloisters and its incredible collection of medieval roof carvings which are the largest of their kind in the world. Since setting off from the National History Museum in 2018, Dippy has so far visited Dorset County Museum, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Ulster Museum, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow, Great North Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne and National Museum Cardiff. Dippy is currently at Number One Riverside in Rochdale, the penultimate stop on the tour.
