Vodun is primarily a Haitian system of folk medicine that attributes illnesses to angry ancestors. It consists of appeasement ceremonies used to find the cause, and healing rites in which a Vodun priest interacts directly with sick people to cure them. Propitiatory rites where food and drink are offered to specific spirits to make them stop their aggression, and preventative rites where ancestors are offered sacrifices to help ward off future trouble. AUGUSTINE Catholic Center, Office of Communications • 11625 Old St. Augustine Road, • Jacksonville, Florida • 32258 Phone: 904-262-3200 • Fax: 904-262-2398 • www.dosafl.com FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DATE: March 18, 2019 CONTACT: Kathleen Bagg 904-262-1705/office Statement on Holy Ghost Father William Malone Jacksonville, FL. – Credible allegations of sexual abuse of a minor have been made against Father William Malone, a Holy Ghost Father who served in the Diocese of St. Augustine from January 1982 to March 1992. The abuses occurred in the early 1980s at Sacred Heart Parish in Jacksonville. A thorough review of the allegations was conducted by an independent investigator. Based on his report, the Diocesan Review Board found the allegations to be credible. The report has been shared with local law enforcement. Bishop Felipe Estévez has met with the victim to express his deep sorrow for the pain the victim has suffered, and he apologized on behalf of the church. Father Malone served as an associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Jacksonville from 1982 to 1991, and associate pastor at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Palm Coast from 1991 to 1992. He moved to the Holy Ghost Fathers community in Long Island, N.Y. in March 1992. In September 1993 he returned to the Ireland Province of the Holy Ghost Fathers where he remained until his death in 2003. If you or someone you know has been harmed by someone representing the Catholic Church, call the police. You can report abuse to the Florida Department of Children and Families by calling 1-800-962-2873. You may also contact the Diocesan Victim Assistant Coordinator, Tina Nugent, by calling 904-208-6979 or email inquiries@dosafl.com A total of 699 children have been identified by the federal government as homeless in the St John´s County Public School District in March 2019. These are 'hidden poor' in our zip code 32092 and some are attending the Picolata Crossing Elementary School, Millcreek Academy, Pacetti Bay Middle School, Wards Creek Elementary School, Nease High School, and others. While the government and the School District have programs that ensure that the children’s education continues, OLGC Church has joined the community to support children that want to continue their education but need help to buy even the basics, such as composition notebooks, pencils, underwear, morning snacks, black dry markers, tab dividers, ring binders etc. Please contact Jorge Bertran for more details at olgc.jorge@gmail.com THANKS TO YOUR GENEROUS SUPPORT, we helped 73 families in February!
