Fresno Greek Fest 2020 This year’s Fresno Greek Fest will be a “Drive Through” with food to go! We are preparing all of the food in July and August and we need your help! In order to keep everyone appropriately socially distanced, we will have limited, separated work stations with dis- posable aprons and isolated supplies. Because of this, we will have a reservation system for preparation shifts so that everyone will have a place to work. We strongly encourage household family members to come and work togeth- er. (We will not be pairing anyone with someone who is not from their household.) Even if you haven’t come to help before, we will really need you to come, as a party of two or more, to help with food preparation. We will provide all directions in a safe and clean environment. Please watch for a more detailed email to follow!` 3

The Athena Philoptochos Society We hope this newsletter finds everyone continuing to stay safe, masked, and distanced! With Church just re-engaging and Food Festival taking on a different approach, we are still waiting before we begin scheduling for next year. We will keep you informed. Please take some time to reach out to one another to keep our connections strong! We miss you but look forward to safer days ahead! Strapped In: How to Enjoy the Ride and Trust the Divine Driver By, Melissa Allen We’ve all seen it happen in the grocery store parking lot. The back door of the minivan is open and a mom is leaning in, battling her toddler in an attempt to get her into a car seat. The little girl is too young to do it herself, and she doesn’t have the capacity to understand that it’s for her own good. So she balks and cries and carries on, stiffening herself into a board that will not bend to sit and be buckled in to safety. There are times when a child will settle down and fall asleep once the fight is over. And there are others who cry and wail and carry on the whole way home. Mom drives and tries to keep one eye on the road ahead while the other eye looks in the rearview mirror. She attempts to pacify her little one by talking sense into the situa- tion, and in an effort to calm her child says, “It’s okay. I know you don’t like it, but we’ll be home soon. I put you there because I love you and want you safe. I can’t take you out yet. Please believe me.” How often do we go through life and find ourselves in a car-seat situation? We, too, might be crying and carrying on because certainly, this is not where we are supposed to be. We, too, might say, “I want to get out. I want the ride to stop. I want to do what I want right now. Let me out of this car—this situation, this limitation, this troubling time.” But who is listening to our complaints? Who is the parent in the driver’s seat? Could God be the one looking at us, attempting to reassure by saying: “It’s okay. I know you don’t like it, but it will be over soon. Your prayers will be answered at just the right time. You will be at peace once again. I put you there because I love you and want you safe. It’s the best place for you to be right now. Please believe me.” Do we have faith to believe this? Can we imagine ourselves, tantrum-ridden children, angry about being restricted at this moment but trusting that our best Parent, God, truly knows what He is doing and will take us to a place of peace? Like a good Parent, He lets us balk and carry on. But like a trusting child, let’s bend, let’s sit, and let’s try to believe Him through the ride. 5
St. George Greek Orthodox Church Youth June Updates In June, we continued our Zoom activity time for the youngest Sunday School classes (ages 2-8). In addition, we also continued our chats for our other grade levels as well as the dance group. Please contact John at John.j.strzelecki@gmail.com if you or any members of your family would like to be placed on the texting lists for activity time or join any of our band groups. Things to Look Out for in July Our Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco will be doing virtual summer camp beginning the second week of July. This will be a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday program. The last day to register is THIS SUNDAY JULY 5TH. For more infor- mation, please see the attached flyer on page 10. Also, we will continue our Zoom meetings throughout July as well as coordi- nating activities for our youth that correspond with our cooking schedule for festival. Archdiocesan Youth Safety Training With the gradual opening of the church, we are once again committed to completing as a parish our Archdiocesan Youth Safety training for the 2020-2021 school year. This training is mandatory for anyone who wants to work with our youth; whether as an advisor, dance instructor, Sunday School teachers or any other youth worker position. In particular, all youth workers must complete a background check as well as training modules for Youth Safety and Youth Protection (which take one to two hours). The training is required to be completed yearly and the background check every two years. Please email John at John.j.strzelecki@gmail.com if you are interested in more information on completing your training. Family Wellness Ministries As you may know, our Archdiocese and Metropolis has many resources to support our families for Family Wellness. The Me- tropolis of San Francisco Wellness Ministry, which our beloved Fr. Jim and Pres. Donna help coordinate, has the following mis- sion statement: “Connecting individuals, couples, families and clergy through the heart toward healthy Christ-centered relationships.” Our Family Wellness Ministry is committed to providing resources, training, support and information through seminars and workshops to church communities, individuals, families, lay and clergy alike, and who are strug- gling to repair broken relationships and who want to create deeper connections. We have been created by God to connect with others face-to-face and heart-to-heart. We are called by our Lord to love, to listen, to care for and comfort. The Family Wellness Ministry of the Metropolis of San Francisco is established to bring families and loved ones together, to connect through the heart for deeper Christ-centered relationships. Faced with the many challenges of living in a society wrought with divorce, addiction, abuse, and shifting moral values, we see more and more families struggling to keep their families together and their relationships meaningful. Our age of social media, created for the purpose of helping people connect, in many cases is having the opposite effect. We know less of who others tru- ly are, and less of who we are, as we mutually project onto social media what we want others to “see.” Our Family Wellness Ministry is committed to respond to these challenges by encouraging families to reconnect “face-to-face and heart-to-heart”. We are engaging in practical ways to build healthier clergy and parish families by offering resources, training, support, seminars and information to church communities throughout our Metropolis. “Families, clergy and laity should be able to turn to their parish or the wider Church, which offers real guidance and real ser- vices. Throughout its history, the Orthodox Church has offered Her members, and anyone who seeks Her out, places for learn- ing, prayer, reflection, and healing.” ~Metropolitan Gerasimos The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America - Center for Family Care https://www.goarch.org/departments/family Metropolis of San Francisco – Family Wellness 6 http://www.familywellnessministry.org/
Summer Series: “Couples’ Communication”: Let’s talk about it! Introducing a new ministry for Orthodox Young Married Couples with the collaboration of the Metropolis Family Wellness Ministry and the Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministries. Join us for an open forum for young married couples to gain insight and helpful tools that will cultivate “wellness” in their marriages and family life. We will meet once a month this summer during June, July and August, and then we'll offer our amazing book series this fall. It is open to engaged couples as well, especially as they are going through their marriage enrichment classes. This summer series will be offered once a month on Thursdays, July 16, and August 20, 2020 at 6:30pm PST on zoom. George Papageorge MFT, Director of Family Wellness Ministry will share insights from his 30 years of coun- seling couples. Johanna Duterte Carter, Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministries, will help facilitate our discussions. All together, we will connect, interact, and learn practical principles for healthy communication and conflict resolution. We will discuss relevant topics such as… What role does “self awareness” play in talking skills? What role does “empathy” play in listening skills? What communication tool box did I inherit from my family of origin? The vital role of having “differences”. Dispelling the myth that good marriages are conflict free. For more information and Zoom log-in, please visit the Youth and Young Adult website: 7 www.gosfyouth.org/young-married-couples

“A Time for Every Purpose Under Heaven” Orthodox Christian Stewardship Program St. George Greek Orthodox Church 2219 N. Orchard Street Fresno, CA 93703 559 233-0397 2020 Confidential Stewardship Commitment Form Please fill out this form and return to the church office (2219 N. Orchard St. Fresno, CA 93703). Did you know that out of the 400+ families that our church ministers to, only 220 families are stewards? Of those 220 families, 78 fami- lies give less than $500 per year. If each of these 220 families gave at least $2,200 per year, we would be able to fulfill the financial obliga- tions of our church. This would free up income from fundraisers, like the Food Festival, to use on property improvements and future growth. We ask that if you have the means, please consider giving at least $2,200 per year in stewardship. If you already give at least $2,200 per year, we ask that you consider increasing your stewardship by 10% for 2020. No matter what you are financially able to give, you are a valued member of St. George Church.
