ST. MARK’S MESSENGER VOLUME 23 ISSUE 1 • JANUARY 2019 Pastor Dan’s Article The first time Moses tried to save Yahweh’s people, he failed. You’d have to think that Moses would have been aware of his position. He had been raised in the palace of the Pharaoh, trained to lead the Egyptians. There would have been nobody in a better place to free Israel from their oppression than him. I think this would have been something that Moses would have thought about. I think this is why he killed the guard in Exodus 2, and why Pharaoh’s immediate response was to try to kill him; this is an insurrection, he was trying to free his people. And because he failed, he ran away. Ran away and spent 40 years in the desert watching his father-in-law’s herds. While this may not seem odd to you, in that time, a grown man would not be the one watching the herds, it was a job given to a boy, a child. Grown men had more important things to do. Which means this story is the story of a grown man who had been prepared to lead the world’s largest super power, spent 40 years essentially pouting on the backside of the desert, doing the job of a child. He failed, he messed up and he spent 40 years running away from his destiny. And in that 40 years, I think its safe to say, there was still nobody else as qualified to lead God’s people out of slavery than he was. I believe that the people were in slavery those 40 years because Moses wasn’t ready to lead them out. Its not that Yahweh couldn’t free his people, he chose to wait for Moses to be his partner in bringing his people our of Egypt. This leads me to wonder, how long was the burning bush burning? Was it burning for the whole time, just waiting for Moses to notice? How many times did Moses see the bush and not notice it. Even when he did notice it, he commented that it was on fire, but not being consumed. How long does it take you to watch a bush burn, before you notice it isn’t burning up? Maybe God was trying to get Moses’ attention the whole time he was in his self-imposed exile, but Moses was so focused on his failure that he didn’t have his eyes open. Not only that, can you image what living in your failure for 40 years does to your self esteem? In Exodus 3, while Yahweh is calling him, Moses just keeps giving Yahweh excuse after excuse, which makes sense if you’ve spent half of your life living in the fallout of your failure. Its no wonder he didn’t think he could do it anymore. Yet Yahweh wasn’t having any of that, re-affirming him, providing him help, answering his questions. Even though Moses didn’t think he could do it, Yahweh did. He called then sent Moses to Egypt and the rest is history as Moses brought Israel out of slavery. Moses, for me, is a very relatable character. Often, I have a dozen excuses about why I couldn’t and shouldn’t do something. “I’m not gifted enough.” “I’ll probably just mess it up.” “People won’t think I’m good enough.” “I won’t know what to say or do.” “I tried before, and failed.” My insecurity, I’m sure, is laughable to God. He’s called us, why wouldn’t he provide us what we need to accomplish his mission. Just like Moses, your life has uniquely situated you in a place, that there are callings from God that you are the most qualified to follow. There are places in the world where you’re the only one who could go into with God’s love. There are opportunities to minister to people that will remain open until you choose to say yes to God’s call. The only question is, will you notice God’s call and join in the work that he is doing, work that only you can do? 2019 is a new year. Perhaps you’ve spent the last 40 years wandering in the desert, but maybe this year is the year to begin to overcome the excuses you’ve told yourself about yourself and join God in bringing transformation wherever you go. For His Kingdom, Dan Bellinger, Family & Outreach Pastor 1

St. Mark’s Culture & DNA This section of our newsletter is meant to be a source of education to help us better understand the culture, DNA, structure and ministry of St. Mark’s. We hope you find this encouraging, informative, challenging and inspiring. It’s critical as we develop a Kingdom Culture we have the same understanding, language and information, so we do encourage you to read this section each month. Our DNA: Each month in this section we highlight a key part of our DNA, or our common makeup as a church. While we are all unique and have our own unique DNA, we also as a church have a shared, yet unique DNA. The foundation of our church DNA and culture are our Core Values. We recently did a sermon series on these that you can listen to or watch online. St. Mark’s Core Values are: • Christ-Centered Faith • Trust of the Holy Spirit • Authority of Scripture • Discipleship • Focus on Mission and Service • Church as Christian Community • Our Lutheran Tradition Our Vocabulary: Most churches (along with other organizations) do not realize that the language and the vocabulary of the organization have great significance to the organization. The main underlying emphasis of our strategic plan for 2017-2021 is to continue to create a Kingdom Culture at St. Mark’s, that is have a culture as a church that matches the Kingdom of God and the vision for the church cast by Jesus in the Bible. One of the cornerstones of any culture is language or vocabulary. As a part of our strategic plan we have developed a key vocabulary that we need to become a part of our church life and culture. Each month we will focus on different parts of our vocabulary in this section of the newsletter to help us develop a common cultural vocabulary here at St. Mark’s. Prayer of the Month: Prayer of St. Francis Lord, make me an instrument of your peace Where there is hatred, let me sow love Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy; O divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console, To be understood, as to understand To be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Culture Question of the Month: What do you see God doing in your life right now? 7
St. Mark’s Financial Update Operating Fund Snapshot General Fund/Budget/Operating Fund The Operating Fund is our yearly budget. This is also called the general fund. This is what Pastor Dan likes to describe as the ‘regular’ income and expenses of the church. The Operating Fund covers those things that occur on a regular basis such as compensation for Pastor Marcus, Pastor Dan, Kathy and Laura and things such as utilities, insurance and other regular expenses for our staff, building and ministries. This is different from the special (restricted/designated accounts) that cover new initiatives and one-time or special expenses. Through November 30, 2018 Operating Fund Reserve Remaining: $11,798.67 Income Expense Net Budget $246,652.08 $246,652.08 $0 Actual $236,515.19 $245,936.90 -$9,421.71 Difference -$10,136.89 $715.18 ————— ————————————————————————————————————————————— Finance Note: November giving was a bit low, but we are hoping to finish strong in December. Christmas, Wednesday night services and a five Sunday month should help some. Our anticipation is to end close to budget. For those who could not attend the annual meeting, we shared a lot of important information about our finances, budget and challenge in 2019. If you have questions, please see a council, finance team or staff member. Finance Education for January St. Mark’s utilizes various funds to help categories, track and spend the funds we receive. This is due to a variety of factors, primarily focused on meeting the needs of the church and honoring designed giving from those who give to St. Mark’s. Throughout the year, we want to educate you about these various funds in our newsletter. This month we are focused on our three major funds: the General Fund, the Building Fund and the Funding Our Future fund. General Fund: This is the main fund of St. Mark’s and is how we pay for budgeted expenses and where we record general income, offerings and any undesignated income. The vast majority of money we receive on Sunday mornings or via electronic or online giving goes into this fund. This is how we pay our salaries, general bills such as utilities and insurance, and fund most of our regular programs and ministries. In that sense, this fund is our operating fund and is most essential to our work and ministry at St. Mark’s. Building Fund: This is the fund used for special building projects and needs that cannot be covered in the budget. These are often one time, larger needs around maintenance and replacement such as heating and cooling. This helps us take care of our building and have a consistent budget each year for the more regular maintenance needs. This fund is only used for the building. Funding Our Future: This is the fund used for special ministries, projects and needs that cannot be covered in the budget. These are often one time, larger needs or seed money to start new ministries or initiatives. These are not for items that should be covered in the budget or things that are considered maintenance or administrative in nature. They must be things that help move the church forward. They also must be consistent with our mission, vision and are usually something that are a part of our strategic plan. Council makes the decision on how these funds are used based on suggestions from staff, council or ministry team leaders. This fund was initially started for a 3 year term, but has been continued much like the building fund was in the past. 8

Why do we???… This is a part of a series of articles we will publish in our newsletter every other month or so. It is an opportunity to look at the ‘why’ of what we do. Why do we??… Have a Second, Modern Worship Service? Back in April of 2017 we started a new, modern second service. At the end of 2017, we decided to move it from 5:00pm to 11:30am given that we did not feel that the time was working out as well as we had hoped and we were worried about burn out with the music team. We are coming to the end of our first full year with the new time. Attendance varies wildly for this service from as few as 10 to as many as 40. The nursery is usually more full in this service than in the first service. Those who come are composed of three groups: the staff and volunteers who help, church members who come on occasion and new individuals and families. Almost all who come from that last group are under 40 years old. While the service has not grown as quickly or as much as we would have hoped, we have several individuals and families that would not have a church service that they would go to without this service. In that sense, we feel really good about what we have been doing. It is always good to think about why we do these things, especially when they do not turn out quite as expected. So, why do we have a second modern worship service? Reaching People. At the heart of the purpose in each and every church is reaching people with the saving faith of Jesus Christ. Regardless of location, denomination and pastor, every church who proclaims faith in Jesus should be reaching people who do not have faith in Jesus. This service was started to help us do a better job in reaching people. Worship love language. We all have a worship love language. For some it is the organ, for others it is modern music, for some it is the piano, for others it has nothing to do with music at all! We cannot speak everyone’s love language, nor can we (or should we) design one worship service that makes everyone happy and speaks their worship love language 100%. We want to be sure to offer something for most of the worship love languages even if we cannot speak every language and please everyone. Creating a community. We want to create healthy, Christ-centered community for those who are unchurched and dechurched. The modern service is designed not only to create a space for modern worship, but also to create community. Connecting to Jesus and the Church. No one person, group or church has all the answers. We rely on each other as one holy catholic (universal) church to learn from one another so that we may work together (not in competition) to reach the world for Jesus and to make disciples of all people. We need something after ALPHA. Almost all of the unchurched people that participate in ALPHA would never step foot in a traditional service and if they did, they would likely never return. We desire for all ALPHA participants to connect to a church, whether it is St. Mark’s or another faith community. It's essential that we have some sort of service that they can go to after experiencing ALPHA. We want to thank all who help support this service. We could use more help, even once a month or once every other month with nursery, prayer, tech or a variety of other areas. Let the office know if you are interested in helping us. Please do continue to keep this service in your prayers. 10
