PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL KAYAK ASSOCIATION 2021 TRIPS and TRAINING CALENDAR WELCOME Welcome to the 2021 PIKA trips and training calendar, your guide to paddling happiness. PIKA’s volunteer trip facilitators spend a lot of time researching and creating this calendar for paddling throughout the year. It includes trips, clinics and practices that appeal to every skill level. Facilitators may limit the number of participants on their trips so sign up early and often! Please note that there are no “drop in” trips. You MUST contact the facilitator to sign up, at least 2 days before the day of the trip and earlier for weekend or full week trips. Trip launch sites can be changed, group size may be limited, trips may be cancelled or rescheduled and if you haven’t spoken to the facilitator, you may find yourself on the beach alone. In addition, a float plan must be filed by the facilitator and your emergency contact information is required. Please make sure you get a confirmation back from the facilitator. Consult the PIKA trip classification system on page 4 to determine if a trip may be suitable for you. Discuss your skills with the facilitator if necessary. MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT Hello everyone and welcome to our 2021 trip calendar. We are going forward with a positive attitude and a full trip calendar. If we end up having to cancel a few paddles because of COVID-19, that would be much better than not preparing a calendar at all, and missing so many wonderful opportunities – we will be ready for the world when the world is ready for us. We were able to do 31 PIKA paddles in 2020. This happened only because we had them in our calendar in the first place. PIKA members are required to practice solo and assisted re-entries every year to be eligible to join PIKA trips. Prior to COVID-19, we organized practice sessions in indoor pools during the winter. This year, however, there will be no pool sessions. Instead, we have scheduled 7 outdoor practice sessions during the spring to allow members to practice their solo and assisted re-entries before the May 31 deadline. At these sessions, PIKA volunteer instructors demonstrate the re-entry techniques including proper distancing procedures and then you practice them! Plan to attend 1 of these sessions: March 14, April 11, April 24, May 2, May 8, May 20, May 30. HOW TO SIGN UP FOR A TRIP When you select a trip to sign up for, ensure that your skills meet the paddle’s PIKA classification. The facilitator may not allow you on the trip if they feel that you don’t meet that classification. To sign up for a trip, contact the facilitator by email at least 2 days before the trip (or by the date specified in the trip description) and provide the following information: Your name Number of years of paddling experience and your Paddle Canada or equivalent skill level Name of manufacturer of your kayak and its colour Medical issues that the facilitator needs to be aware of Your cell phone number Emergency contact phone number Your vehicle’s manufacturer, model, colour and license plate number Your MMSI number if you are bringing a VHF radio The facilitator will send you detailed information about the trip and a waiver form which you must complete and return before the trip. PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL KAYAK ASSOCIATION 2021 TRIPS and TRAINING CALENDAR COVID-19 SAFE PRACTICES When you head out for a paddle, here are our recommended COVID-19 safe practices: Don't paddle alone...paddling in groups of 3 or 4 is best. No more than 6 No car pooling unless you live together Don't touch each other's gear and don't help undo each other's kayaks Be careful when assisting another kayaker with their kayak, unloading, carrying, loading Use hand sanitizer after helping to carry/load/unload someone's boat Make sure the foot pedals/rests/rudder controls are set for the length of your legs before starting the paddle. No one can help you adjust them on the water while remaining COVID-19 safe. Carry hand sanitizer and Lysol wipes (a few wipes in a Ziploc will fit in your PFD pocket Carry a couple masks in a Ziploc in your PFD as well...emergency only...one for you and one for the unexpected swimmer who needs an assisted re-entry and you haven't got a safe distance method under your belt yet. All paddlers need to be able to self re-enter, but stuff happens!!! For those of you who wear those circular "buffs" around your neck, they pull up easily to double as a mask. Remember to stay 2 metres apart, including when you stop for lunch Don't go out in rough water...we don't want you to have to do an assisted re-entry, or need to involve search and rescue Be confident in your self re-entry so that an assisted is not necessary Don't forget all your usual safety equipment and dress for the water...it is still cold Revised May 18, 2021 pikakayak.com Page 3 of 35
PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL KAYAK ASSOCIATION 2021 TRIPS and TRAINING CALENDAR TRIP CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM PIKA applies the classification system described below in its trip calendar to indicate the expected skills/degree of difficulty (1-4) and distance involved and physical effort necessary (A-D) for a PIKA trip. A trip classification is set by the most difficult and most strenuous part of the trip. It does not take into account changes in sea conditions or weather which may change trip classification unexpectedly. For the required equipment for a trip, see the PIKA Paddler Guidelines on the PIKA website. A–Not B–Moderately C–Strenuous D–Very Strenuous Strenuous Strenuous Less that 3 3 to 5 hours 5 to 6 hours More than 6 TRIP CLASSIFICATION hours per day per day per day hours per day Less than 6 nmi 6 to 10 nmi 10 to 15 nmi More than 15 nmi Sheltered spots Some sheltered Infrequent Few or no spots sheltered spots sheltered spots 1–Easy Minimal paddling skills 1A 1B 1C 1D Assisted re-entry skills Protected inland waters Moderate wind effects Weak to moderate current Easy to moderate landings 2–Moderate Basic paddling, able to brace Self/assisted re-entry skills Sheltered/partly-sheltered coastal waters Moderate wind effects 2A 2B 2C 2D Weak to moderate current Easy to moderate landings 3–Difficult Good paddling, sea skills Self/assisted re-entry skills Open coast, exposed water, crossings and swells. Kayaking conditions are variable and contain unpredictable elements that make any attempt to grade inexact. Revised May 18, 2021 pikakayak.com Page 4 of 35

PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL KAYAK ASSOCIATION 2021 TRIPS and TRAINING CALENDAR JULY Wednesday 2B-2C Nuchatlitz Provincial Facilitator: Doug Childress to Friday Park doug_childress@hotmail.com June 30- Nuchatlitz Provincial Park Nuchatlitz Provincial Park encompasses the very northwest tip of Nootka Island and a large number of small island groups. Expect to see an abundance of nosey July sea otters in large numbers with an opportunity for whale sightings. Day trips 9 around the islands in the park, excursions to Catala Island from a base in the park. In the south part of the inlet visit sea caves and explore the Mary Basin area. We will see an abundance of marine life, especially sea otters. The plan is to restrict ourselves to two base camps, weather and sea state dependent. Some open coast exposure during crossings. Option 1 Depart from Gold River on Thursday July 1 at 7:00am. Reservations for 8 have been made for travel on the Uchuck. Travel in comfort on this 136 ft supply vessel stopping at remote villages, fishing and logging camps along the way. The Uchuck wet launches us at Rosa Harbour via a crane, returns to Gold River in reverse on Friday July 9. Gold River to Nuchatlitz follows Nootka Island on its way to Kyuquot, we would depart at Rosa Island. Transport fee is $70.00/passenger one way, plus $21.00 for the kayak. The 2021 Uchuck web site mentions a 10% discount for Paddle Canada members. Option 2 I see this option as a contingency option should the MV Uchuck not take passengers due to the pandemic. We camp overnight in Zeballos June 30 then launch July 1 from the bridge at Little Espinosa Inlet. Return on July 9 with a possible water taxi which takes up to 8 kayaks. $500 for the taxi from Rosa to Zeballos village. Some car shuttles between Zeballos and Little Espinosa Inlet may be required (4km). Camping gear, emersion gear, food and water. Details to follow. Sign up by May 1.
