ATTRACTIONS Tip from the mayor Dr Thomas Spies The university town of Marburg is like a history book written over the course of the centuries. And in the thick of it, in the historical market place, is the prestigious town hall [6] – as the centre of social, cultural and political life. For more than 400 years now, there has been consistently amusing drama to be seen and heard every hour on the hour: On the town hall’s renaissance gable, the cock raises its wings to the messenger’s tinny craw. 4 GÄSTEFÜHRUNGEN

Castle of the Landgrave The founding residence of the Hessian Landgrave was built as a castle to crown the land of the so-called “Gisonenfelsen” rocks. Origins date back to around 1000 whereby the castle of the Land- grave was counted among the first hill castles in Germany and the starting point for the development of Marburg. Castle of the Landgrave, princely residence, fortress – the Gothic and late Gothic structures with renaissance fixtures represent a unique, multifaceted history. The casemates located at the castle moat and park are evidence of this. An important part of the castle, which is now in the possession of 12 the university, is the Museum for Cultural History which includes collections on Hesse’s pre and early history, religious art and civic urban living. In summer, the beautiful castle park, the town festival “3 Tage Marburg” and the open air cinema on the castle park stage are centres of attraction for Marburg residents and its guests.
