From the Pastor’s Desk Living on God’s Mountain “Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.” Psalm 99:9 I have really grown to love the mountains. In the last three years, we have visited Yellowstone twice, the Grand Tetons, and Rocky Moun- tain National Park. We are thinking about going to Glacier National Park this year. Probably 25 years ago, I was part of a group that hiked and camped in the Rocky Mountains just west of Denver for a week. One day we spent an afternoon on the highest peak we were going to hike that week. It was breathtaking. We read scripture and praised God for his majesty and beauty. But sadly like all vacations and hiking trips, we had to come down from the mountain and go back to our reg- ular days and schedule. We long for those mountaintop experiences in our lives. Those times when we feel God’s presence in a very profound way. But how do we have those mountaintop experiences while living in the valley? Jesus tells us how in the Sermon on the Mount. During February and March we are going to look at the Sermon on the Mount found In Matthew chapters 5-7 and Luke chapter 6. Jesus had just started his ministry and picked his first few disciples. Jesus began to preach in Matthew 4 but in Matthew 5,6, and 7 Jesus gives his first recorded at length teaching about who he was and what message he was bringing from God to man. Great crowds were following him, so he went up on a mountainside and began to teach his disciples and eve- ryone else there what his ministry was all about. For those few hours, everyone there heard the voice of God’s son but when it was over they had to go back to their regular lives as well. Jesus’ words though were meant to stay with them and change them forever. They weren’t meant to be left on the mountaintop.
I encourage you to read these four chapters several times over the next couple of months. They have everything we need to live productive spiritual lives that prepare us for eternity. I look forward to living on God’s mountain with all of you the next couple of months. Jesus’ words tells us what is really important in this life. C.S. Lewis said it this way, “Aim at heaven, you get earth thrown in. Aim at earth, you’ll get neither.” What are you aiming at with your life right now? We start the Lent season on February 17th. We have seven confirm- ands that will give their statements of faith. We’ll have various people speak during these services. It will be a special time of worship each Wednesday. It’s been encouraging to see the virus numbers continue to decrease in our county. Our Sunday worship numbers continue to in- crease as well as those attending our Wednesday night dinners. I hear each week, people getting their vaccinations or scheduled to get them. There is a lot to thank God for right now. We still pray for all families affected by the virus as well as medical and educational people on the frontlines. So many powerful verses from the Sermon on the Mount that we will cover. I hope Matthew 6:34 gives you comfort and peace, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Worry takes away today’s joy. Live on God’s mountain each day and he will strengthen your faith and heart. And…Go Chiefs!!! Serving Christ Together, Russ

THANK YOU Jerry and I would like to thank the Men's Brotherhood and all that joined them for the wonderful Christmas Carol's cd, the music was great and we certainly enjoyed listening to the songs. Also, thanks to the Women's Guild and the Sunday School for the Christmas Greeting Cards, they were much appreciated. Also thank you to all that make it possible for us to sit in our recliners on Sunday mornings for church service. We'll certainly will be happy when we can join back in person. Happy New Year and God's Blessings to all. Jerry & Ruth Coale Dear UCC, Thank you very much for the scholarship and the senior gift. It all came in handy for school books and proper PPE for heavy equipment class. ~ Kueffer Koestner A special thank you to our wonderful church family, relatives and friends for the beautiful cards, notes of encouragement, phone calls and all the prayers for my recovery. I am glad to be home and doing better every day. God is so good! ~ Bob & Mary Burger Dear Church Family, As members of the California United Church of Christ, the Morris Burger family thanks you for the beautiful fresh flowers you sent for Morris’ viewing and Celebration of Life service. Morris loved the church of his baptism and confirmation. Although we were unable to attend the last months of his life, every Sunday we were in church at Susan and Philip’s home. Church members remembered Morris during his illness and last days with notes and cards, food and visits. The family is very grateful for these expressions of kindness. ~ Sincerely Dolores, for the family
Women’s Guild - January 20, 2021 The Women’s Guild met January 20, 2021 in the Friendship Hall with 11 Ladies present. Linda Schnieders opened the meeting with our Bible verse: 1 Corinthians 1:26 “Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.” Carole Barbour led our Bible study on the disciples Matthew, Thomas, James, Simon and Judas son of James. We don’t know too much about these disciples. Matthew was a tax collector and his Jewish name was Levi. Thomas is mentioned in each of the three synoptic gospels only once and that is in a list- ing with the other 11 disciples. James was the son of Alphaeus. Simon is num- ber 10 in the listing of the apostles. Judas is the last of the faithful apostles and is the son of James. These men are ordinary. What makes them special is the message they preached and the Lord they knew and served. Our thought for the day was given by Laura Burger a poem about smiles. Smiles are a free gift of God. Wear a smile. Our mission this month is the Moniteau Christian Ministries Center/Food Pantry/Buddy Packs. The mission for the Church is One Great Hour of Sharing and the Sunday School mission is the Samaritan Center. An offering was re- ceived. The minutes of the December 16, 2020 meeting were corrected to show that we are to donate $100 to each of our monthly benevolent projects as follows: January: Moniteau Christian Ministries Center/Food Pantry/Buddy Packs, February: Every Child’s Hope (Evangelical Children’s Home), March: World Day of Prayer, April: Salvation Army, May: Rape and Abuse Crisis Center, June: California Ministerial Alliance, July: Halo House, August: River City Habitat of Humanity, September: Festival of Sharing, October: Operation Shoe Box, November: Blanket Fund, December: Healing House and New Beginnings. The minutes were approved as corrected. The financial report was accepted. Committee #1 served Raymond Bieri’s celebration of life dinner. Committee #2 will serve the next dinner. Card Ministry will be sending out Valentine Cards to nursing home residents and shut-ins. We received several thank you notes and Christmas cards thanking us for Christmas gifts and cards. Thank you Mary Burger and Pamela Hill for delivery of Christmas Gifts to Nursing Homes and Shut-ins.
World Day of Prayer is March 5, 2021. It was decided to postpone a gathering that day due to concerns for the Covid virus and for it to be put on the agenda in August to discuss again. Bible study for February will be the first 3 Miracles on the chronological list- ing of Jesus’ Miracles. 1. Jesus turns water into wine at the wedding in Cana. John2:1-11. 2. Jesus heals an official’s son in Capernaum Galilee. John 4:43- 54. 3. Jesus drives out an evil spirit from a man in Capernaum. Mark 1:21-27 & Luke 4:31-36. Memorial money use: A motion was made to purchase a commercial can opener costing up to $425. Motion carried. Fatigue mats for in front of dish- washer were discussed and tabled to get more information. January birthday was Mary Brizendine – January 14 Alberta Rich closed the meeting with a prayer. UCC Men’s Brotherhood Minutes – Monday, January 25, 2021 Devotion – Robert Barbour opened the devotion time with the hymn, “All Hail the Power of Jesus Name”. He then shared a devotion entitled, I have discov- ered the secret of life. As we go through life, we tend to buy and collect lots of stuff. Life is a process of accumulation and dispersion. And, sometimes the ac- cumulation gets way ahead of the dispersion. It seems like it’s easier to get than to get rid of. This eventually creates problems. The key is to figure out what is important and sort the rest out. And, if we remember to include God in the sort- ing process, things will go a whole lot better. Business Meeting – Abe called the meeting to order. The secretary’s minutes from the December meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s report showed a current balance of $1206.71 and was approved. Abe read a thank you note from Keith and Paula Selk expressing thanks for the Christmas caroling DVD the brotherhood made. The group decided to hold election of officers at our regular February meeting. Program – Russell Cobb introduced Donna Ward, Director of Grace Living Center in Clarksburg, Missouri. Donna presented an interesting and informative program about the goals and operation of the Center. Grace Living Center is lo- cated in a building that was formerly a restaurant and can serve up to six resi- dents at a given time. It serves as a transitional living center for homeless wom- en with addictions. Most of the residents are referred by court order and some come at their own accord and live at the center for up to 11 months. The resi- dents are required to hold a job, help with house chores, take developmental classes and attend church and devotional time on a regular basis. Each resident pays a program fee to cover utilities and other living costs. A future goal of the center is to set up a group of tiny houses on adjoining lots that would allow for some residents who have completed their residency to have a small place to live in independently. Grace Living Center is a 501 c-3 non-profit organization and is operated under the auspices of a board of directors. Jeff Green, local attorney, is one of the board members and attended our meeting with Donna and partici- pated in the discussion. Next months’ program will be presented by Keith and Anna Marie Hendrix. Anna Marie grew up in Cuba and will visit about her time there. Refreshments – Robert and Carole Barbour provided wonderful refreshments after the meeting.
