St. Vincent de Paul Parish 2 Sunday Scripture Reflection It has always been a fairly common occurrence that people get lost. Since the dawn of time, people have used various methods to find their way. Yet sometimes we don’t have good directions. Sometimes we take a wrong turn. Although GPS and Google Maps have cut down on getting lost, it still happens. Sometimes as well we can get lost in our lives. A poor decision leads to another and one day we wake up to discover that we are a long way from where we hoped or wanted to be. Perhaps grief, anger or sadness has knocked us out of line. Perhaps the anxieties and worries about the church or our political system weigh us down and lead us to lose sight of our ideals. Whatever the reason, we often can feel lost or adrift in our lives, wondering how we got to where we are or how to get to where we want to be. We hear today the story of how the Magi followed the star to the infant Jesus, how they finally arrived to see the child and worship him. In our lives, there isn’t a physical star to lead us to where we want, but the star that grounds us and helps us to find direction and meaning is Christ himself. When we begin to follow his light in our lives, even if it seems far off and dim, we grow in our love and our hope. The light directing us and leading us is always there if we are open to seeing it. As St. Paul said, nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ – not distance, not sin, not fear. Jesus is waiting for us to see him in our lives, to give of ourselves in service to one other. Today we are invited to trust in him, especially if we feel lost, at drift or alone. Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis has invited us to recognize the loving and merciful presence of Jesus in our lives, and to be the mercy of God for others. Even when we are adrift and unsure and full of doubts, Jesus is there to welcome us and help us to grow. He is the star that can draw us back into a life of love and faith. Our celebration today of Epiphany is really a celebration of the fact that Jesus came for every person throughout the world. No one – past, present or future – is outside his love and mercy. Christ works in the life of each person, you and me included. We are called to recognize his loving presence and guidance in our own lives, and to help others who are lost or alone to see it in their lives as well. The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019

St. Vincent de Paul Parish 8 News & Notes ! " TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Monday of this week is Christmas Day in Russia and in much of the Orthodox world. This curious difference in schedule has a lot to do with how calendars have been developed and changed over the years. In the year 45 B.C. Julius Ceasar gave the empire his Julian Calendar, with the winter solstice on January 6. This put an end to a system in which officials called pontiffs were able to tweak the calendar by adding extra days in as needed. He invented two new months at that time, December and January; and in order to correct the mess the pontiffs had made, forced a year of 445 days on the empire in what he named The Last Year of Confusion. The new months varied in number of days according to a complex schedule, but the calendar was still off by nearly twelve minutes a year, and lost a full day every 130 years. Pope Gregory XIII reformed the calendar in 1583, but not everyone appreciated his efforts. England held out for two hundred years. The year 1700 was a leap year in England, but not in France; they were eleven days apart! George Washington was really born on February 11; when the Gregorian calendar was finally adopted in the English colonies shortly before the Revolution, he had to move his birthday to February 22. Now the calendars are thirteen days apart, which accounts for Russias Julian calendar Christmas. And Caesar thought he had brought confusion to an end! —Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. St. Vincent de Paul Parish 9 News & Notes ON PACKING BOXES, AND EPIPHANY MOMENTS Copyright 2018 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) About a month ago now, I had a chance through my employer to participate in a service project for the Salvation Army. Per HR’s late-October email: “We are looking for your support and involvement to further our efforts in the fight against hunger through our partnership with the Salvation Army!” Further down, the email gave details around a couple of specific service needs, and here’s the one that caught my attention: “We are asking our associates to volunteer to fill food boxes at the Salvation Army location here in Elk Grove Village…We need 30 people each day, and if we get 60 people to participate each day we will split the time into two shifts…” It caught many of my colleagues’ attention, too, because come the day, we sent two teams of 30+ to the SA warehouse. The first group worked from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM. My group worked from 10:00 AM to noon. The SA folks had clearly handled such volunteer effort before, as everything was nailed down/buttoned up (whichever phraseology you prefer). But since we’re talking clichés, let’s just say that this wasn’t their first rodeo. They had the logistics worked out before we entered the packing area. Two parallel lines. Sort of like the two lines at a salad bar, but instead of putting things on your plate, you put things on somebody else’s plate (or here, into somebody’s else’s box). At one end of the line, folks were forming the boxes that the food was packed into. These boxes were maybe the size of box you’d end up with if you bought a case of printer paper. Most of my colleagues ended up here and I had intended to join them, but I was tagged instead to be one of the people filling the boxes with the food being given away. The SA had pallets of stuffing mix and mac & cheese and flour and on and on, with one person stationed at each commodity to fill up the boxes as they rolled over the conveyor belt toward sealing and palletizing. Me? I was the cake mix guy. Fitting. I like cake. And while I kept up with the flow, I was often smiling to myself recalling the I Love Lucy episode when she was wrapping chocolates on the line. Hysterical! I was surprised to hear at noon that we had packed 1,382 boxes. This meant that I’d packed roughly half of that number of cake mix units and that Joanne--across from me at the salad bar--had packed the other half. It also meant that that my colleagues at the very beginning of the line had folded the 1,382 boxes that Joanne, Natalie, Lori, and Max and all the rest filled up. The SA people told us it was an impressive total--and that’s good, I guess--but a month later, I’m really hanging on to something else they told us. They told us that with a permanent staff of less than ten people, they simply couldn’t do this on their own. This spoke to me. Many hands really do make light the load, you know? Epiphany moment-wise, this isn’t way up there, and yet it’s something to consider as we head into 2019. The Kingdom needs us more than ever. There is good work to be done everywhere we turn it seems, and when we roll up our sleeves--in whatever context--amazing things happen. The Epiphany of the Lord January 6, 2019

St. Vincent de Paul Parish 14 Celebration of the Sacraments at St. Vincent de Paul Reconciliation: Saturday afternoon, 4:15-4:50 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room near the Sheffield entrance of the church, or you can call the Parish Center for an appointment. Baptism: Please contact Mary Carter (mcarte40@depaul.edu) to register for baptism preparation, which is held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. You may attend this class either before or after your child is born. Following preparation and after your child is born, please contact Mary to schedule a baptism date. Baptisms are celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the month at 11:30 a.m., or during a regular Sunday mass. Baptism is not celebrated during the Lenten season. Marriage: Please contact Mary Carter (mcarte40@depaul.edu) to discuss the celebration of the sacrament of marriage here at St. Vincent’s, or concerning preparation and prenuptial matters if you are getting married in another parish. For baptized Catholics, marriage is celebrated within a Catholic church in the presence of a priest or deacon. The first item to plan is the selection of a date and time. In order to celebrate the sacrament of marriage at St. Vincent, one needs to be a registered parishioner for four months prior to discussion of a date. DePaul University faculty, staff, students, and alumni may also celebrate their wedding here, provided either the bride, groom, or both are Roman Catholic, registered at a parish and actively engaged in the practice of their faith. Weddings are celebrated on Saturdays only, at 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. Weddings are not celebrated during the season of Lent, Holy Week or Saturdays that conflict with other parish events. Mary confirms all reservations for weddings. Confirmation: Catholic adults who would like to receive the sacrament of Confirmation are invited to contact Rebecca at rcarmic1@depaul.edu. Confirmation preparation sessions are held Sunday evenings February through May. RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a program that prepares adults to receive the sacrament(s) of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. Preparation sessions are held on Sundays from 11:15 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and celebration of the sacraments occurs at the Easter Vigil mass. To learn more or to enroll in the RCIA program, please contact Rebecca at rcarmic1@depaul.edu. First Communion: Requires two years of classes. Family catechesis (classes for parents and children) religious education classes are held monthly. Please contact Rebecca at rcarmic1@depaul.edu. Priesthood/Religious Life: Please contact Fr. Jim Osendorf, CM, by phone at 1-800-depaul-1 or by email at vocations@vincentian.org to learn more about becoming a priest or religious.
