Prelude

Hymn 371: “Thou whose almighty word” Moscow
1 Thou, whose almighty word 3 Spirit of truth and love,
chaos and darkness heard, life-giving holy Dove,
and took their flight; speed forth thy flight!
hear us, we humbly pray, Move on the waters' face
and, where the Gospel day bearing the gifts of grace,
sheds not its glorious ray, and, in earth's darkest place,
let there be light! let there be light!

2 Thou who didst come to bring 4 Holy and blessèd Three,
on thy redeeming wing glorious Trinity,
healing and sight,                          wisdom, love, might;
health to the sick in mind, boundless as ocean's tide,
sight to the in-ly blind, rolling in fullest pride,
now to all humankind, through the world far and wide,
let there be light! let there be light!

Opening Acclamation
Celebrant: Blessed be the one, holy, and living God.
People: Glory to God, for ever and ever.

Celebrant: Jesus said, “The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord
your God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all
your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love
your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:29-31
The Confession
Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
All: God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing
your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in our-
selves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves
us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore,
and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your
love and serve only your will. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through
our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the
Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Song of Praise: 122 (St. 1): “Alleluia, song of gladness” Urbs Beata Jerusalem
Alleluia, song of gladness,
voice of joy that cannot die;
alleluia is the anthem
ever raised by choirs on high;
in the house of God abiding
thus they sing eternally.

The Word of God
Celebrant: God be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.

The Celebrant says the Collect (Prayer) of the Day BCP 215
Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on
earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant
us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and
the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Deuteronomy 18:15 - 20
Common English Bible translation (CEB)
The Lord your God will raise up a prophet like me from your community, from
your fellow Israelites. He’s the one you must listen to. That’s exactly what you
requested from the Lord your God at Horeb, on the day of the assembly, when
you said, “I can’t listen to the Lord my God’s voice anymore or look at this great
fire any longer. I don’t want to die!” The Lord said to me: What they’ve said is
right. I’ll raise up a prophet for them from among their fellow Israelites—one
just like you. I’ll put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I
command him. I myself will hold accountable anyone who doesn’t listen to my
words, which that prophet will speak in my name. However, any prophet who
arrogantly speaks a word in my name that I haven’t commanded him to speak,
or who speaks in the name of other gods—that prophet must die.

Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People.
People: Thanks be to God.

Gospel Alleluia: “Arise, shine, for your light has come” Arise shine
Refrain only, Sung twice
Arise, shine, for your light has come,
his glory is upon you.

The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark 1:21 - 28
People: Glory to you, O Christ.
Common English Bible translation (CEB)
Jesus and his followers went into Capernaum. Immediately on the Sabbath Jesus
entered the synagogue and started teaching. The people were amazed by his
teaching, for he was teaching them with authority, not like the legal experts.
Suddenly, there in the synagogue, a person with an evil spirit screamed, “What
have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know
who you are. You are the holy one from God.” “Silence!” Jesus said, speaking
harshly to the demon. “Come out of him!” The unclean spirit shook him and
screamed, then it came out. Everyone was shaken and questioned among them-
selves, “What’s this? A new teaching with authority! He even commands unclean
spirits and they obey him!” Right away the news about him spread throughout
the entire region of Galilee.

Deacon or Priest: The Gospel of our Savior.
People: Praise to you, O Christ.

The Homily The Rev. Will Dickinson
The Nicene Creed                                                         BCP 358
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only
Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down
from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the
Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius
Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in
accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the
right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the
dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord,
the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father
and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Proph-
ets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one
baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

O Lord our God, accept the fervent prayers of your people; in the multitude of

for you are gracious, O lover of souls, and to you we give glory, Father, Son, and
Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Hymn 448: “O love, how deep, how broad, how high” Deus Tuorum Militum
1 O love, how deep, how broad, how high, 4 For us to wicked hands betrayed,
how passing thought and fantasy, scourged, mocked, in purple robe arrayed,
that God, the Son of God, should take    he bore the shameful cross and death;
our mortal form for mortals' sake! for us gave up his dying breath.

2 For us baptized, for us he bore            5 For us he rose from death again;
his holy fast and hungered sore;             for us he went on high to reign;
for us temptations sharp he knew; for us he sent his Spirit here
for us the tempter overthrew. to guide, to strengthen, and to cheer.

3 For us he prayed; for us he taught; 6 All glory to our Lord and God
for us his daily works he wrought:           for love so deep, so high, so broad;
by words and signs and actions, thus the Trinity whom we adore
still seeking not himself, but us. forever and forevermore.
Celebrant: Let us now join in the prayer that Jesus taught us.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we
forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from
evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer for the Power of the Spirit Among the People of God
God of all power and love, we give thanks for your unfailing presence and the hope
you provide in times of uncertainty and loss. Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us
your holy fire. Revive us to live as Christ’s body in the world: a people who pray, wor-
ship, learn, break bread, share life, heal neighbors, bear good news, seek justice, rest
and grow in the Spirit. Wherever and however we gather, unite us in common prayer
and send us in common mission, that we and the whole creation might be restored
and renewed, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing
May Christ, the Son of God, be manifest in you, that your lives may be a light to the
world; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be
among you and remain with you, always. Amen.

The Dismissal
The congregation responds Thanks be to God!
