Insiders v Outsiders Art Lecture Series Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man Sunday 13 January 2pm Simon Poë discusses an image from the Bible story of Jacob and Esau and looks at the dominance of the ‘smooth men’. This first talk examines the myth of Marsyas and Apollo, the Wild Man of the Woods, and much, much more. Insiders and Outsiders Sunday 27 January 2pm This talk is on the Royal Academy of Arts in London: its foundation in 1768; who was in and who was out; and the rivalry between William Hogarth and Sir Joshua Reynolds. Lord Leighton and the Academy of the Undead Sunday 10 February 2pm Leighton was the second great leader of the Royal Academy but his figures are often criticised for looking like animated statues or even corpses. He died in 1896 and Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published the following year. Hear how within the Academy, Leighton’s brand of academic painting staggered on, zombie-like well into the 20th century. £3.50 per lecture. No booking required. EXHIBITIONS We Are Premier League! From October To celebrate Huddersfield Town’s great success in gaining promotion to the Premier League, and staying there, we have put together a small display of items from our archives at Tolson Museum. The 1920s were the real glory years when Town dominated the league. Rare memorabilia on show includes a programme from the 1922 FA cup final when Town beat Preston North End. Free entry. Accessible by stairs only. Our Fight for the Voting Right! Our exciting new exhibition explores the stories of the suffragettes and suffragists of Huddersfield, from the mill cottages of Batley to the grand houses of Huddersfield. Come and see our extraordinary ‘Votes for Women’ banner and help us recognise the centenary of the 1918 Act that gave (some) women the right to vote at last. #Vote100 Free entry. EVENTS Armistice Centenary Commemorations November 2018 sees the centenary of Armistice Day, which saw the end of fighting in the First World War. Mark this occasion with a visit to Kirklees’ largest War Memorial, The Tolson Memorial Museum. Exhibitions Huddersfield Art Society Until 3 November This well-established art society presents a vibrant and varied exhibition of artworks, most are for sale. Industrial Landcape by Glen Williams Hoot Creative Arts with Sally Jerome - Look Twice 22 September to 3 November An exhibition of printing work by Hoot Creative Arts made in response to paintings, prints and sketches by the late Huddersfield artist Sally Jerome. The exhibition shows a richly layered printed piece on a long continuous roll of paper, alongside some of the pieces of Jerome’s work it was inspired by, together with connected sound work also made by Hoot. Stuart Roy Clarke: The Game 29 September to 5 January 2019 ‘The Game’ reflects the changing face of the country’s favourite pastime with a particular focus on Huddersfield Town. The large- scale photographs are all taken by Stuart Roy Clarke, an artist who has worked non-stop for over 30 years producing a football portrait of the nation. Clarke has an independent eye but has been supported by all the major football bodies from the 1990s until the present season, a special time for The Terriers. Liz K Miller: The Circular Scores 10 November 2018 to 2 February 2019 Liz K Miller is the winner of the West Yorkshire Print Workshop’s 2017 Flourish Award for Excellence in Printmaking. Through mapping and notating, she explores the seductiveness of cycles and repetitive patterns to the human condition. This exhibition brings together imagery that deconstructs and re-invents musical score in order to visualize the complexity of sound within time and space. HCMF at Huddersfield Art Gallery Christopher Fox: Other Times, Other Places 16 November – 25 November 2018 Inspired by the great stone circles of these islands, Other times, Other Places gathers sounds rather than stones - field recordings from different locations around the British Isles. It can be experienced either as a sound installation or as the setting for live performances. It is a collaboration between Christopher Fox, the improvising musicians Angharad Davies and Tom Jackson, and the composer/sound designer Georgia Rodgers. It’s Happening | Oct 2018 - March 2019 23
Exhibitions Contemporary British Painting Untitled Yard Painting (Albert) by Narbi Price Prize 2018 winner of the painting prize 2017 1 December to 2 February 2019 The Contemporary British Painting Prize is an annual prize celebrating the best of contemporary painting created in the UK. The shortlisted artists will each show three paintings in the exhibition at Huddersfield Art Gallery. The winner will be announced at the gallery on 1st December. The judges are Matthew Collings (painter, critic and broadcaster), Amisha Karia (Head of Collection, Paintings in Hospitals) and Grant Scanlan (Huddersfield Museums Manager). Coming in 2019…. David Blackburn Once again we are partnering with Messums of London to stage a major exhibition, this time of artwork by Huddersfield’s visionary landscape artist the late David Blackburn MBE. Co-curated by Maxwell Doig, this is not to be missed. Events Mindful Drawing Workshops Thursday 4 October, Saturdays 6 October, 3 November, 1 December, 2 February, 2 March 11am-1pm Join artist Maggie O’Keefe for a mindful approach to drawing inspired by the artwork on display at the gallery.
