GATHERING IN GOD’S NAME All stand when the entrance bell is rung Christ, whose glory fills the skies, Christ the true, the only light, sun of righteousness, arise, triumph over shades of night; dayspring from on high, be near; day-star, in my heart appear. Dark and cheerless is the morn if you seem not close to me; joyless is the day’s return, till your mercy’s beams I see, till they inward light impart, glad my eyes, and warm my heart. Visit then this soul of mine; pierce the gloom of sin and grief; fill me, radiancy divine; scatter all my unbelief; more and more yourself display, shining to the perfect day. Charles Wesley 1707–88 alt. Reproduced with permission Tune: Heathlands TiS 212 In the name of God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Words of welcome 3
Let us pray together Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God’s forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only begotten Son Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. 4
For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Let us pray. Faithful God, you have appointed us your witnesses, to be a light that shines in the world: let us not hide the bright hope you have given us, but tell everyone your love, revealed in Jesus Christ the Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD All sit A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah. 58:1-9a Thus says the LORD: Shout out, do not hold back! Lift up your voice like a trumpet! Announce to my people their rebellion, to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practiced righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgements, they delight to draw near to God. ‘Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?’ Look, you serve your own interest on your fast-day, and oppress all your workers. Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day to humble oneself? Is it to bow down the head like a bulrush, and to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Will you call this a fast, a day acceptable to the LORD? Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up quickly; your vindicator shall go before you, the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. 5
Psalm 112:1-9 Praise the Lord. Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who greatly delight in God’s commandments! Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in their house, and their righteousness endures for ever. They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful and righteous. R It is well with those who deal generously and lend, who conduct their affairs with justice. For the righteous shall never be moved; they will be remembered for ever. R They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, trusting in the Lord. When they see their adversaries, their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid. They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor; their righteousness endures for ever; their horn is exalted in honour. R Words and music by permission tr. from the USA United Methodist Liturgical Psalter (1989) Reproduced with permission. TIS 69 A reading from the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians. 2:1-12 When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God. Yet among the mature we do speak wisdom, though it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to perish. But we speak God’s wisdom, secret and hidden, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this; for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him’ – these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what human 6
being knows what is truly human except the human spirit that is within? So also no one comprehends what is truly God’s except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. For the word of the Lord, thanks be to God. I am the light of the world, says the Lord: whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life. Alleluia. Let your light shine before others: so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. Alleluia. The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew. 5:13-20 Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus went up the mountain and was joined by his disciples. Then he began to teach them: ‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfil. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’ For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Sermon – The Revd Roxanne Addley 7
HOLY BAPTISM The candidates and their sponsors gather at the altar step We welcome Milana Glover and Penelope Hinds who come to be baptised. I invite their sponsors to present them now. Sponsors We present (NAME) to be baptised. Before God and this congregation, you must affirm that you turn to Christ and reject all that is evil: Do you turn to Christ? I turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? I repent of my sins. Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust? I reject them all. Do you renounce evil? I renounce all that is evil. Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, and lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. Amen. Will you each, by God's grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God with all your heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life's end? I will, with God's help. To the congregation: You have heard these our brothers and sisters respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? All We will. Grant, merciful God, that Milana and Penelope may be so buried with Christ in baptism that the new nature may be raised up in them. May the fruit of your Spirit grow and flourish in them. Amen. May they know Christ’s forgiving love and continue in the fellowship and service of his Church. May they proclaim, by word and example, the good news of God in Christ. Amen. We thank you for the ministry we have in your world and to each other in the household of faith. Hasten that day when the whole creation shall be made perfect in Christ. Amen. The candidates and sanctuary party proceed to the font Everyone is welcome to follow and gather around the font 8
Spirit of truth, essential God, who did your ancient saints inspire, shed in their hearts your love abroad and touch their hallowed lips with fire, to you that through all ages live our worship without end we give. Still we believe, almighty Lord, whose presence fills both earth and heaven, the meaning of the written word is by your inspiration given; you only do yourself explain, the secret mind of God make plain. Come then, divine Interpreter, the scriptures to our hearts apply; and, taught by you, we God revere and in three Persons magnify; in each the triune God adore, who was, and is for evermore. Charles Wesley 1707–88 alt. Reproduced with permission Tune: Surrey TiS 426 The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish the earth; you nourish and sustain all living things. Thanks be to God. We give you thanks that through the waters of the Red Sea you led your people out of slavery to freedom, and brought them through the river Jordan to new life in the land of promise. Thanks be to God. 9
We give you thanks for your Son Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing with the Holy Spirit. Thanks be to God. We give you thanks that through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised to new life in triumph. Thanks be to God. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who forms us in the likeness of Christ and leads us to proclaim your kingdom. Thanks be to God. And now we give you thanks that you have called these your servants to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. Pour out your Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that those who are baptised in it may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. May they die to sin, rise to newness of life, and continue for ever in Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we give you praise and honour in the unity of the Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. I now ask you to affirm as yours the faith of the Church Do you believe in the God the Father? I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. The third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith: We believe in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. [NAME], I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen 10
[NAME], I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ's own forever. Live as a disciple of Christ: fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. God has brought you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. God has called you into his Church. We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God. The newly baptised are greeted by the congregation All stand We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. You are invited to exchange a sign of peace with those around you 11
During the hymn the bread and wine are brought to the altar and a collection is taken up O changeless Christ, for ever new, who walked our earthly ways, still draw our hearts as once you drew the hearts of other days. As once you spoke by plain and hill or taught by shore and sea, so be today our teacher still, O Christ of Galilee. As wind and storm their Master heard and his command fulfilled, may troubled hearts receive your word, the tempest–tossed be stilled. And as of old to all who prayed your healing hand was shown, so be your touch upon us laid, unseen but not unknown. In broken bread, in wine outpoured, your new and living way proclaim to us, O risen Lord, O Christ of this our day. O changeless Christ, till life is past your blessing still be given; then bring us home, to taste at last the timeless joys of heaven. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING … for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Glory be to thee, O Lord most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. … in songs of never-ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen. As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD & COMMUNION We who are many are one body: For we all share in the one bread. 13
All kneel or sit O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us thy peace. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. Communicant members of all churches are welcome to receive Holy Communion. If you would prefer a blessing, indicate this by crossing your arms over your chest. Please feel free to stand or kneel to receive Communion. Low-gluten altar breads are available, please tell the priest if you require one. During communion the choir will sing: Sicut cervus by Palestrina Like as the hart desireth the water brooks, so longeth my soul after thee O God. Following communion, all stand for the Post-Communion prayer THE SENDING OUT OF GOD’S PEOPLE Great God, your Spirit, like the wind unseen but shaking things we see will never leave us undisturbed fulfil our dreams, or set us free, until we turn from faithless fear and prove the promise of your grace in justice, peace and daily bread with joy for all the human race. 14
Lord, shake us with the force of love, to rouse us from our dreadful sleep; remove our hearts of stone, and give new hearts of flesh, to break and weep for all your children in distress and dying for the wealth we keep. Help us prevent, while we have time, the blighted harvest greed must reap. And then, in your compassion, give your Spirit like the gentle rain, creating fertile ground from which your peace and justice spring like grain; until your love is satisfied, with all creation freed from pain, and all your children live to praise your will fulfilled, your presence plain. Alan Gaunt 1935– . Words by permission Stainer & Bell Ltd, London Arrangement © Gordon Jacob Tune: Jerusalem TiS 416 Announcements are made Most loving God, you send us into the world you love. Give us grace to go thankfully and with courage in the power of your Spirit. The peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God, and of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. Amen. Go in the peace of Christ. Thanks be to God. Organ postlude: Praeludium by Johann Krieger You are invited for tea and coffee in the Old Vicarage Parish Centre down the path to your left as you leave the church 15

Total giving for the quarter was $47,377 against a budget of $43,750. At this stage, we believe that we are on track to meet our budget goals for parishioner giving this year. In addition to regular giving, a number of parishioners have also made donations to the Christ Church Music Foundation, and many have given through the parish to the following causes: Christmas Bowl: $507; Gippsland emergency relief fund: $1,708. The wardens and the vicar would like to thank all parishioners for their ongoing generosity in funding the ministry and mission of Christ Church. If you are not yet part of the Planned Giving programme and would like to make a regular donation via direct debit or weekly envelopes, forms are available at the back of the church and can be completed at any time. We also encourage your ongoing support of the Christ Church Music Foundation. - Christine French, Sarah Benfield, Stephen Hehir. 16
NOTICES Sunday Study Groups for 2020 There will be a series of opportunities throughout the year to deepen our knowledge of the faith and tradition of the church. The February series is led by the vicar: Lex orandi, lex credendi – the Anglican Prayer Book Tradition Music Foundation Summer Cocktail Party The 2020 major fundraiser for the Music Foundation will be on the evening of Friday February 21. Stunning South Yarra location. Invitations are available this Sunday. Explorations in 2020 “Explorations” is a Bible study group that meets after the 10am Eucharist each Wednesday for an hour. We examine the readings for the following Sunday, and often the Sunday preacher will be part of the group. It is an excellent opportunity both for deepening faith and knowledge, and for good fellowship. All are welcome. Toorak Road Night Works – February - March The City of Melbourne will be starting night-time footpath renewal works on the northern footpath of Fawkner Park. They will start on Monday night 3rd February 2020 and anticipate the works will be completed in eight (8) weeks. Toorak Road will be closed from 8pm to 6am Sunday to Thursday nights during this period. There will be no parking along the northern boundary of Fawkner Park during the whole time of the works, but access to the Christ Church car park will not be affected. Pastoral Visiting Program As part of our ministry to support our parish community, we are planning to grow our team of pastoral visitors. Pastoral visiting is a ministry involving nurturing our community who are new or unable to come to church by visiting and providing a listening ear and extended Communion. We are running a training program after Easter to equip interested people with the necessary skills for pastoral visiting. If you are interested in this ministry, please talk to Roxanne or Marilyn to receive a role description. We will also be having an interview before Easter to further discuss the role with interested people. Please consider if God is calling you to this important ministry. 17
CONTACT emails Each week, those on the parish roll who have provided email addresses will receive an email of the week’s notices, along with other useful information, and links to items of interest. If you have not received the email it is because either a) we do not have your correct email address or b) the email has gone to your spam folder. If you did not receive the email and would like to do so, please email the parish office on ccoffice@ccsy.org.au. St Martins’ Food Ministry Christ Church has been asked to contribute to the “non-food” elements often needed in assistance parcels. The following can be placed in the basket at the rear of the church each Sunday: small packets of toilet rolls, packets of tampons, toothbrushes, toothpaste, individual packets of soap, shampoo and conditioner, packets of nappies. Flowers Due to the unavailability of regular in-house flower arrangers, Parish Council has agreed a new system for providing flowers at Christ Church. Flowers for weddings, funerals, and major feasts will be provided by award-winning local florist Victoria Whitelaw. Flowers will not routinely be provided at other times other than by donation. Parishioners who would like to pay for flowers for a particular occasion (suitable flower arrangements start from $250) should contact the parish office, or fill out the new “flowers form” available at the back of the church. Anyone who would like to volunteer to arrange flowers may speak to the vicar at any time. Spirituality through Literature Book Group You are most welcome to join us for one or all books.
