Page Three The Most Holy Trinity May 30, 2021 Fr. Ken’s Corner Dear Sisters and Brothers of Saint Rose of Lima Parish, I’m sure just about everyone has been looking forward to this Memorial Day Weekend for many reasons. We’re coming to the end of the restrictions forced upon us during the Covid virus pandemic, and with so many of us receiving the vaccine, we’re experiencing a sense of FREEDOM that we haven’t enjoyed for over a year. Once again, we can gather for barbeques, air shows, crowded beaches with the pleasant and warmer weather and going out to a ball game or patronizing your favorite restaurant – all without a sense of FEAR that we will be exposed to something possibly lethal – all without having to wear a mask. I capitalized two words up above – FREEDOM and FEAR. I think all of us had a highly elevated sense of fear a little over a year ago when everything closed down very abruptly. After so many years in this country, we haven’t been hit by a disease that was so deadly and so widespread. We’ve known people who have died due to cancer, heart attacks, stroke, car accidents and violence, but we haven’t faced down a single disease which had the power to kill young, middle-aged and old, rich and poor of every race and nation almost without challenge. One of the freedoms outlined by President Franklin D. Roosevelt was Freedom from Fear, and we all feared – with good reason – that someone we loved would be hit hard and die from this terrible disease. This weekend, we remember and, more importantly, we honor those in our Armed Forces who protected us from foreign enemies and who paid the ultimate price in extending that protection. In so many moments in our country’s history, some foreign power has acted and worked in such ways that we feared losing the way of life we’ve enjoyed – won at so great a price almost 250 years ago. This year, I would like to include in our thoughts and prayers those medical warriors - doctors, nurses, emergency medical personal. Police and Fire fighters - who gave their lives in the war against Covid-19. This year, I would also like to remember so many others, especially in the service industries, who died from the virus while serving people like you and me as we tried to keep our lives going with the basic necessities. In every case, they overcame their fears of catching and dying from the virus so that we might live a life closer to normal. The concept of FREEDOM is what those in the Armed Services of land, sea and air fought and died to achieve for you and me. This sense of being free from taxation without representation launched our great nation. A terrible Civil War was fought to give freedom to those in slavery. Two costly wars fought around the world and military actions in Southeast Asia and the Middle East taught us that freedom is not free. So many American lives were lost in those conflicts. Yet in recent months, we have witnessed a number of people around the country – even persons in state legislatures and in Congress - complaining and protesting that their freedom is being ‘taken away’ because they have been told that they have to wear a mask – for a simple reason, to protect others. This is NOT a political statement, but a reminder for us as followers of Jesus Christ in all situations, to practice Christian Charity and to show common courtesy. Those who died to protect the true freedom of speech, those who died to protect our freedom to worship as we choose, those who died to protect our freedom to vote, those who died to protect the freedom of the press, and those who died to protect our right to bear arms would cringe at the notion that a ‘freedom’ was being taken away by having to wear a mask to protect the freedom of others to remain healthy. During this Memorial Day weekend, let us all thank God for the gift of so many men and women in so many roles of service who gave their lives so that we might enjoy the liberties afforded and guaranteed to us through our Constitution. Let us also pray to God that no matter what our political leanings, we continue to work to BETTER BECOME ONE NATION UNDER GOD INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. This week is the last for required masks at St. Rose.
