A NOTE FROM FATHER DAVID To all the families who currently find themselves with kids preparing for the 2020 school year: Perhaps you have had to make the decision to take the at-home virtual-school route this year, or you know another family who has. Maybe you’re going to use the virtual program provided by local schools, or maybe you’re even going to use one of the many wonderful available Catholic homeschool programs for the first me in your life. I have four words for them or for you: You can do it! Let me expand on those four words. If you’re a parent, you have what it takes to be your child’s teacher. You might not believe it, or you might say, “Fr. David, have you met my child?” But I repeat: if you’re capable of paren ng your child, then you’re capable of teaching your child. You can do it. “Fr. David, teaching and paren ng are two different things.” Well, think about this: Do you and/or your spouse normally help your kids with homework at the end of the day, or at least make sure they do it? Yes? Surprise: that’s literally the only qualifica on you will need, thanks to the advances in today’s homeschool programs! Don’t believe me? You should, because I was one of those homeschool kids. My parents weren’t educa on majors in college or anything like that. I some mes joke that I “taught myself.” Yes, high school too. Of course, the program I used had counselors I could call for help, if I got stuck on something in a lesson or assignment. (I used Seton Home Study School, which was fully accredited and not very expensive.) My parents didn’t go through college preparing to teach their kids at home, but homeschool programs made it possible! And if you’re using a school’s at-home virtual op on this year, I’m sure it will be similar: the kids will have teachers available to answer any difficult ques ons about the lessons or assignments. Meanwhile, you will con nue doing what you have always done: helping them with their assignments in any way you can, making sure they get their work done, and everything else that comes with being parents to your children. You absolutely can do it! I do want to encourage you, if you’re planning to go the route of “virtual school” this year,” to consider using a Catholic homeschool program instead of your school’s virtual op on. Catholic homeschool programs have been perfec ng at-home learning for decades now; “virtual school” on the other hand is new this year, and teachers might be as confused as you about how it works. Over the years since my gradua on, Catholic homeschool programs have only go en be er and easier to use. I can remember mailing in my papers to be graded, and wai ng for them to come back with the teacher’s grade and comments. Nowadays, however, most homeschool programs use very convenient online tools. Some programs are even exclusively online, although I’m not en rely sure that’s the best thing for kids. But every kid is different, and teaching them at home allows you to tailor the program to your own child and to move at your child’s pace. If your kid is one of those brilliant ones who are always bored in class because they understand the lesson and did all their work already, while the rest of the class is trying to catch up—well, with homeschooling they can move on to the next lesson and maybe finish the school year in March or even advance to the next grade early! If your child is one of the ones who gets le behind in class all the me—well, with homeschooling they can’t possibly get le behind, because the next lesson won’t start un l they’ve learned their current lesson. Look, I’m not saying homeschooling is for everybody. I’m just saying that every healthy couple has what it takes to homeschool. You do! And if you’re one of those parents who finds yourself op ng for “virtual school” due to COVID-19, I want you to know that YOU CAN DO IT. Perhaps the real challenge for parents today isn’t “school-at-home,” but rather “kids-at-home.” But if you commit to it, your family can in fact live together harmoniously and even joyfully. I heard several stories of how “stay-at-home” helped siblings to learn to get along and even become closer friends. There’s no be er place to learn generosity, forgiveness, and all the other virtues, than at home. If the pandemic has given us this opportunity to reclaim our families, let’s take it! And remember: if you decide to have your kids do school at home this year, you’re not alone! Be sure to connect with local Catholic homeschool groups (like RCHAL) or stay in touch with other families that have chosen to do “virtual school,” to share the challenges you face, things you have found helpful, and any ways you can assist each other. Finally, remember to rely on God. It’s me to start praying together as families. Spouses shouldn’t leave everything school-related to one spouse, and the same applies to prayer. Moms and especially dads have a great opportunity right now to take seriously their spiritual leadership of their families. “Come on kids, we’re going to say a decade of the rosary together as a family.” Anyone who doesn’t have five minutes to pray every day needs to make a dras c change in their lifestyle. Every day, we make me for the things that are most important to us. Once we start pu ng God first and having a rela onship with Him, we will find that other things will begin to fall into place. With God’s help, I promise you, you can do it! 6 | SAINT LUKE THE EVANGELIST CATHOLIC CHURCH
