Dear Evan Hansen…. As some of you have observed, I love going to the movies! Unfortunately, since the coronavirus came into our lives, most of us have avoided theaters. But this past week I was finally able to see a film called “Dear Evan Hansen.” Perhaps some of you have seen it, or had the opportunity to see it as a Tony Award winning musical on Broadway when it debuted in 2017. It is the story of a young high school student named Evan Hansen. Evan suffers from social anxiety, so his experience in school is difficult. He is shy and awkward, he has no friends and is o en alone. Without divulging too much of the plot, Evan accidentally becomes involved in the life of a troubled classmate named Connor Murphy. Connor and Evan are not friends, they are barely acquaintances, but their lives come together when Connor commits suicide and his family believe that he and Evan were best friends. Evan exploits the misunderstanding, and uses it to gain popularity in his school as well as a connec on with Connor’s parents and sister (who he secretly has a crush on). The film explores mental illness, teen suicide, and the tremendous isola on young people (and adults as well) can some mes feel even in the midst of a crowd. As I watched this film and listened to the music again a erwards, it brought me back to my own experience of high school so many decades ago. I, too, was shy and introverted, suffering from anxiety and self-isola on, and (except for a few notable and wonderful excep ons) without many friends or meaningful rela onships. In my case, what brought me out of this painful introversion was religious faith. My a endance at a spiritual retreat at the beginning of my senior year in high school changed my life: not only did I discover a wealth of kind, compassionate, young Catholic kids, but I also came face-to-face with a person I heard about but didn’t really know: Christ. I discovered a treasure trove of meaningful friendships, people who were not perfect but with whom I could share my heart and my life along with my insecuri es and fears. Best of all, I discovered in Christ the best friend who would be with me during moments of anxiety, and in whose transforming love I could find meaning and direc on for my life. Although the film Dear Evan Hansen showcases a beau ful and emo onally impac ul storyline and music, what was most apparent to me was a lack of any spiritual dimension to the characters or any awareness of a reality beyond this earthly one that could have brought comfort to any of the people involved in the story. Any comfort offered, any solace and meaningful interac on experienced, was horizontal and never ver cal. In other words, the film portrayed the crucial importance of friendship and family rela onships and the ways they give our lives meaning- a social network of hearts united in love, shared sorrow, and the experience of a suppor ve community that can uphold us as we seek to uphold others in their own isola on and insecurity. In this regard, the film was right on target- family and friends are absolutely necessary to our thriving and to our emo onal and mental well-being. But the film found no place to encounter the ques on of a loving God who reasonably exists and is there to uphold us in our darkest moments. In this I felt sad about the message of the film, because I knew that many young people who suffer from isola on, anxiety, depression, and dysfunc onal rela onships will probably see the film and not be presented with the role religious faith can rightly play in our lives. As I watched Dear Evan Hansen, I thought about the young people in my own life, in our community, and in our parish. How many of them suffer from anxiety, depression, bullying, family and rela onal struggles, mental illness, and feelings of isola on or neglect? How many turn to the internet or other poten ally unhealthy outlets for comfort and find only judgment and impersonal ‘friends’ that care li le for them. How many adults feel the same devasta ng isola on, “tap, tap, tapping on the glass, waving through a window, on the outside looking in” (as Evan Hansen sang)? Are our schools, in fact, giving our children an awareness of an eternal des ny and the knowledge of a God who willed them into existence and sustains them in His providen al love? Are parents giving their children this gi , the gi of faith that will save them even when sports awards and diplomas will not? As Fr. Nick asked us last week at Mass, what are we seeking? Peace? Hope? Joy? Love? And are we seeking these things in the right places? How can we show our children and others the place to truly experience these things if we ourselves do not know where to turn? But all is not without hope! Because God is always available for those who desire to seek Him, even just a liƩle bit. Can we point ourselves and one another in the right direc on, journeying together toward the Light by which we will finally truly see? At the end of the play, Evan joyfully sang “All we see is light, watch the sun burn bright, we could be alright for forever, feels like we could go on forever….” Well, Dear Evan Hansen, this life may not, but YOU can if you allow yourself to be embraced by an Eternal Love wai ng for you, wishing for you, hoping for you, and seeking you within your own struggle to seek peace, hope, joy, and love that lead us, if we let them, to Him.
