St. Charles Public Library September - November 2020 Discover Your Library St. Charles Public Library News and Event Guide BANNED BOOKS WEEK: CELEBRATING YOUR FREEDOM TO READ Join us for the Annual Banned Books Week, September 27–October 10, as we celebrate the freedom to read, seek and express ideas, even those considered controversial. Launched in the 1980s, Banned Books Week was created on the heels of a 1982 Supreme Court case ruling that school officials cannot ban books in their libraries simply because of their content. From that, the Banned Books Week initiative was formed to spark conversations about challenged books and the role of censorship. What makes a book end up on the banned or censored list in schools, libraries and book stores? The most common reasons according to the American Library Association are sexually explicit materials, offensive language, unsuited to age group, violence, homosexuality, witchcraft, religious viewpoints or anti-family. Books still are being banned today, but during Banned Books Week, we celebrate the right of the reader to form his or her own opinion about a book. The list of banned books includes titles that can help readers, especially teens and young adults, understand and navigate difficult situations. Banned Books Week is a great way to discuss censorship and to encourage communication. To celebrate this week, visit our website for a list of banned books or stop by the Library to pick up a “banned book.” See for yourself why it was—or still is—considered controversial.

Adult Programs NEW & NOTEWORTHY by Edith G. Craig The St. Charles Public Library continues to move forward with our renovation and expansion this fall. Our construction camera is documenting all of the exterior progress as our sunken terraced garden and new entrance is built. The foundation for our new entrance on the east side of the building gives us a peek into the grandness of the future space. As I toured the construction site, it’s easy to envision the new fireplace and bright meeting rooms. Some of the lower level concrete walls have been removed in preparation for the gorgeous glass wall that will welcome you into the space. This fall, we will continue with structural exterior work that will give way to interior mechanical, electrical and plumbing work in the winter. It’s these visions that keeps us engaged in these tumultuous times. In less than one year, we will all have a stunning, renovated library building that will welcome people of all walks of life. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to visit us in our temporary location, 305 S. Ninth Street. Call, email, text or chat to schedule your visit.
