Last December, the Board formed a Capital Improvements Committee to evaluate and make recommendations regarding our docks and clubhouse. We’re ready to share the baseline data on the docks. l Several of our members have taken on the task of exploring what it would take to either rebuild our existing docks in the same footprint or in a new configuration. The committee researched whether the docks should be fixed or floating, or a combination of both. Permitting options were also explored. There is a lot of good, solid information the committee has put together in an interesting presentation. Please be assured that there hasn’t been a decision made about the docks yet. The purpose of the Docks Town Hall is to present information to you, our members, before the Board of Directors makes its decision. Time Again to Turn-About The turnabout party is the one time a year CYC members get to show its Staff their appreciation for all the attention the Staff gives us all year long. Each and every day, members use the Club and its facilities and the Staff makes our days and weeks memorable by catering to individual member whims and wishes. This one day the members gladly play cook, waiter, barmaid, babysitter and host to a day the Staff can indulge their whims and wishes. We truly hope this year’s Turn-About Party was an event for all the Staff to remember. September 2021 CYC COMPASS 5

Hello Everyone, Even though Tropical Storm Fred tried to horn in on our Monthly Cruise to Twin Dolphin, we still had 18 boats attending. The rain held off Thursday evening so we could have a cookout by the pool with everyone bringing side dishes. Frank Giardina and Jim Turner showed off their grilling skills with hamburgers and hotdogs. Friday morning, some guys went golfing while ladies walked to Caddy’s on the beach for some shopping. Thirty four of us celebrated Richie Shaw’s birthday with dinner at Mattison’s Grill on Friday evening. Saturday morning Jim and Cat Coats provided everyone with Muffins, Bloody Mary’s, Champagne and Mimosas. A few boats headed home on Saturday, though most stayed until Sunday. As always, if anyone is interested in joining us on any of our cruises, please email me at Slnewcom@ verizon.net Stay Safe on the Water and Happy Boating!!! next month’s cruise will be our Annual Cruise-In at Clearwater Yacht Club Sept. 16-19. We will hold our beloved Potato Derby on Saturday at the Club. Of course, all the boyscout/cubscout parents remember the anomaly called the Pinewood Derby—yeah, that’s the one we helped our sons prepare for. As adults, we just substitute a potato for the pinewood. It is always a fun event. So please plan to attend. Prizes will be awarded for the best decorated potato car and, of course, the winner of the race. 8 CYC COMPASS September 2021

By Curtis Wold, Rear Commodore In August, we started off with Music B-I-N-G-O on Tuesday the tenth with Donna as the host trying to get us to guess the name of that tune. Following that, the annual White Party on Saturday the fourteenth featuring White/ Champagne/Sparkling wine tasting brought out a great crowd that kindly moved upstairs thanks to rain from Tropical Storm Fred. Trivia was replaced by Music Bingo on Thursday, the twenty-sixth. We finished the month with the traditional Employee Turnabout Party on Sunday the twenty-ninth with homemade potluck dishes and sides from the members and Tom Cummings and his team at the grill. In September, we are kicking off the month on Labor Day Weekend (September 4-6). Brittany Monet sponsored by Paul Greenhalgh (DJ Paul) will entertain on September 4, Brian Caudill playing on September 5 and a relaxing pool party/barbeque on September 6. The Cruisers Cruise-In at CYC September 16-19. Trivia will be on September 16, JR playing on September 17, and the Potato Car Race/Cookout and Yachting Kickoff on September 18th. We’ll close out the weekend with watching the Bucs v. Atlanta on September 19. We will finish the month with the CYC Poker Run, Saturday, September 25, 10am-3pm. Our thanks again to Christy Crist,Tom Cummings, Hoyt Nichols, and Jim Hannigan for sponsoring the Captains Rum Night with Jim Donnell playing downstairs on Friday, September 24. Keep your eye on the calendar, Facebook, and Constant Contacts for other entertainment details. For this month’s yacht club trivia, how should one determine the size of the national ensign or yacht ensign to fly from one’s boat? Text me at 727-641-8633 with your answer and your name; I will give you a gift certificate for a couple of drinks at the CYC Tiki Bar for the first member who texts me the correct answer. Last month, I asked, what is the proper way to fly the club burgee and national ensign on a gaff-rigged pole? According to the United States Power Squadron website, “. . . the national ensign should be flown from the gaff and the club or organization burgee should be flown at the masthead.” As of the Compass deadline, I had no correct responses to this trivia question rather than three, so folks continue making this too easy on my CYC bill. The next Entertainment meeting will be on Tuesday, September 14 at 6:30 pm at CYC. Until then, I can be reached at woldca@gmail.com or on my cell phone by text or voice at (727) 641-8633.
