Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri Jefferson City 2019 Affiliated Organizations National Garden Clubs, Inc.—Central Region Federated Garden Clubs of Missouri, Inc.—Central District Missouri Prairie Foundation Missouri Botanical Garden History Meeting Schedule Organized: June 1973 Meets Monthly Federated: August 1973 Third Thursday Club Flower: Bittersweet 6:00 p.m. Social 6:30 p.m. Program followed Current Membership by Business Meeting Seventy-five (75) (unless otherwise noted) A History of Bittersweet merican bittersweet (Celastrus scandens L.) is a twining, woody vine that scrambles over low vegetation or trails along the ground. It can climb 20 feet. This strong, hearty, and enduring plant is exactly the type of foundation needed for our club. The dark green leaves of the Bittersweet are oval, finely toothed, smooth and two to four inches long. Clusters of small yellowish-green flowers bloom in May or June and can often be spotted along banks of streams or in moist thickets. Fruit of the Bittersweet is a dull orange, ball-shaped capsule that splits open in September, exposing the bright scarlet, fleshy-coated seeds. The fruit is eaten by several species of birds and other wildlife. Bittersweet depicts our club: A strong organization dedicated to the conservation of our streams and the protection of our wildlife. 1
Club Objectives The objective of the club shall be to study the basic art of gardening, to encourage conservation of natural resources and to cooperate with other clubs and agencies interested in horticulture and conservation. Conservation Pledge I pledge to protect and conserve the natural resources of the planet Earth and promise to promote education so we may become caretakers of our air, water, forests, land, and wildlife. "The single greatest lesson the garden teaches is that our relationship to the planet need not be zero-sum, and that as long as the sun still shines and people still can plan and plant, think and do, we can, if we bother to try, find ways to provide for ourselves without diminishing the world.” ~ Michael Pollan Fund-Raising The Annual Garden Tour generates funds to support the club operation and scholarships for area students. Nature is constantly sending even its oldest scholars to the bottom of the class for some egregious blunder.” ~ Alfred Austin 25
2019 Perennial of the Year Stachys monieri ‘Hummelo’ Common Name: betony This is a clump-forming perennial, forming a low mound of crisp green foliage. In early summer the upright spikes of bright-purple flowers appear, which attract bees to the nectar. Removing faded flowers will encourage more buds to form for weeks on end. An interesting and unusual perennial for near the front of the border, or in containers. Plants may be clipped back hard immediately after blooming, to tidy up the clumps for the rest of the season. Easily divided in early spring. Prefers a sunny location and is hardy to zone 4. www.perennials.com Zone: 4 to 8 Height: 18 to 24 inches Spread: 18 to 24 inches Bloom Time: July to September Bloom Color: Rose-purple Sun: Full sun Water: Medium Maintenance: Low Tolerates: Deer, Black Walnut 26
