Back to the origins
Martigny-la-romaine (Roman Martigny) has preserved its
archaeological remains, while the town of Saint Maurice ex-
hibits the Abbey’s Treasure. There is art everywhere, at the
turn of a corner, in the woodcut engravings on a cabin, in
city roundabouts, at the Pierre Gianadda Foundation and its
park of sculptures, at the Musée Marconi, along the ancient
Roman road Via Francigena, in the stained glass windows of
St. Maurice’s Abbey, as well as those created by Hans Erni.

Where to find our regional products ?
• The asparagus, a Valais specialty, is cultivated between April and May, particularly in Saillon, but also in Charrat.
• The most famous variety of apricot is the Luizet, grown in Saxon, although it can also be found in Bovernier.
• The orchard fruits are grown between Charrat and Martigny and can be directly purchased from their growers.
• Chestnuts are grown in Fully and celebrated in October with a large popular festival.
• Over 70 winemakers/wine merchants in the region will allow you to taste some of their specialities, such as the Petite
Arvine, the Syrah or the Gamay de Bovernier.

A unique landscape
Martigny’s surroundings present a range of beautiful hiking trails and
curious sights such as the Trient or the Durnand Gorges, the adonis
(small yellow flower) footpath, the Follatères nature reserve and its
Salanfe lake chestnut orchard, the mine route or the path of vineyards – all while
you explore the Rhone valley. Along the way, you will undoubtedly
meet pilgrims walking the Via Francigena between Canterbury and
Rome. And for those who love the high mountains, the Muverans
Tour, the Dents du Midi Tour and the Mont-Blanc Tour are some of
the most celebrated in the world.

Bovernier’s inhabitants have been nicknamed Vouipes, the
same word used for wasps. The village, located at the base
of the Catogne mountain, is the home of the Durnand
Gorges and of the Fountain Walk; it is also known for the

CHARRAT
altitude : 461 m - population : 1’700 inhabitants
The village of Charrat was created after its separation from
Martigny in 1836. It is known as one of the few lands in
Western Europe where the adonis (small yellow flower)
grows naturally and visibly during the spring, along the
Sentier des Adonis (adonises footpath). Strollers can also
visit an entirely restored common oven (four banal, in
French) on top of the Vison hills.
DORÉNAZ
altitude : 451 m - population : 850 inhabitants
Located at the entrance of the Dorénaz village are the cliffs
where countless climbing enthusiasts come to practice
their sport. 305 million-years old, they are considered the
second oldest rocks in Switzerland. A cable-car connects
Dorénaz with the hamlets of Alesse and Champex several
times a day, inhabited during the whole year and working
as departure points to several hiking routes.

altitude : 1’224 m - population : 450 inhabitants
An important alpine resort in the beginning of the 20th
century, the town is nowadays known for its untouched
wildlife, and for the Emosson Reservoir Lake, Verticalp
Emosson and its two-cabin cable-car, the steepest in the
world. In the Old-Emosson valley, over 800 dinosaur tracks
dated back to 250 million years have been discovered, and
constitute a unique excursion.

Charming village of the plain, Leytron owes its title of
“commune Grand Cru” to its white and red humagnes, its
emblematic grape fittingly celebrated every November. The
wine trail that runs through the municipal vineyards will
delight your soul, while a break in the cellars and restau-
rants of the area will please your palate. In the heart of the
village, a small church sits proudly since 1695. Dedicated
to St. Martin, it works today as a showroom.

Ski resort and starting point for many hikes and biking

In Saxon, the apricot town at the base of the Pierre Avoi,
every one can create his or her own itinerary through the
Sentier d’Adonis (footpath of the small yellow flowers cal-
led adonises) and the Sentier de l’Abricot (apricot foot-
path), with the possibility of a didactic walk with games
at the Sentier Ludique, unique in Switzerland. You can
also walk the Bisse de Saxon, Valais’ longest footpath.
Immerse yourself in Saxon’s history by visiting its mu-
seum, and join the Fête de l’Abricot, bi-annual apricot
festival which takes place in the first weekend of August.

VERNAYAZ
altitude : 452 m - population :1’850 inhabitants
Vernayaz is the newest village of the Valais – it was
founded in 1912, after its separation from Salvan. The
Pissevache waterfall seems to gush out of the mountain
with a spectacular fall of over 370 feet. Vernayaz is the
home of the Trient gorges, which are impressive displays
of the phenomenon erosion ; it also houses the two
Gueuroz bridges with over 650 feet - among Europe’s
tallest.
