Tennis NZ Seniors continue to play an important role within our tennis community by providing Tennis for all levels throughout the year. Philip Seeman is the recipient of the Trevor Wither’s Trophy for Tennis
Achievement.

Philip has played at the highest level, representing New Zealand in both ITF
TENNIS ACHIEVEMENT.
Teams and Individual competition. Since starting his tennis career as a
junior in 1968 at the Wainuiomata Tennis Club and winning the Junior Club
Champs in 1973, Philip has not looked back. He played in the Otago men’s 1990 Mary Metcalf WBOP
team at the age of 16 and continued to represent Canterbury and also 1991 John Jarvis Wgn

BEVERLEY EVANS SERVICE TO TENNIS
Murray Billington (Lower Northland)
Murray Billington was the recipient of the Bev Evans Trophy for “Service to
Tennis”.
He has made an outstanding contribution to Seniors Tennis during his thirty
years of involvement as a player and administrator, both at Club and National
level. PREVIOUS RECIPIENTS OF THE
BEVERLEY EVANS TROPHY FOR
For the six years he was on the Tennis NZ Seniors Management Committee, SERVICE TO TENNIS
four of these were as President. Very much a “hands on” President who was
involved in the running of the organisation, organising venues, and meeting

with host clubs holding our National events and making sure the association

Murray was a regular player at Seniors tournaments and during his time as 2013 Shirley Brown WC

At National level, he has twelve individual titles, of those, eight doubles titles 2016 Dorothy Lumsden Hwks B
were in partnership with David Theyers and at the Teams Event his Lower 2017 Julie Blow Auck
Northland team won nine titles. Murray also represented TNZS twice at the 2018 Murray Billington L/Nthld
ITF Worlds Teams Event in Perth (2009) and Croatia (2013).
In 2017 Lower Northland Seniors recognised the contribution Murray had
made as a committed and involved member for over 29 years by awarding him
a Life Membership. He served in a variety of roles – President, Vice President,
Club Captain and Vice Club Captain. For many years he was instrumental in
running the very successful May Lower Northland Tournament and in 2008
researched and wrote the 25th Anniversary LNSTC booklet outlining the history
of the club.
Tennis NZ Seniors congratulates Murray as a very worthy recipient of the
Beverley Evans Service to Tennis Award for 2018.

Beverley & Murray Billington Club of the Year Award

Congratulations to Tennis Seniors Auckland on being awarded the Bev &
Murray Billington “Club of the Year” Trophy.
This award recognizes the valuable contribution and achievements the Club
has shown in the seniors tennis community. Tennis Seniors Auckland have a PREVIOUS RECIPIENTS OF THE
young committee which brings new ideas and have a good way of connecting BEVERLEY & MURRAY BILLINGTON
with players. For their local club days, they have moved away from Nicholson CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD
Park Tennis Courts and back to local tennis clubs, finding it is involving a larger
number of players. Over the winter months they have been organising their
social play at the indoor courts at Merton Road Tennis Centre which is proving 2016 Western Bay of Plenty
very popular as it is out of the wind and rain. 2017 Taranaki

Tennis Seniors Auckland have eight fixtures each year, played between 2019 Auckland
February and August involving 12 men and 12 women each match. They ran a
very successful Wimby Challenge using wooden racquets with the players
dressing up accordingly.
Julie Blow has been a long standing member for many years, first working
alongside Ashley Wilson (President) back in 2001 as Secretary/Treasurer – a
role she still holds. Feleti Sofele has been a member of the Management
Committee since 2010 and Grant Waller since 2017.
The recognition is thoroughly deserved and we wish Tennis Seniors Auckland
every success in the future.

Congratulations to Tennis Seniors Auckland organising committee, led by
Grant Waller, whose organisation contributed to the smooth running of a
very successful event. There was only the smallest drizzle of rain on
Sunday morning – not enough to delay matches for very long. Overall the
weekend was near perfect.
240 players participated from around New Zealand including our regulars
from Japan along with other players from China, Brazil, US, UK & Australia.
The main venue throughout the five days was the Remuera Rackets Club.
Mission Bay, Kohimarama, St Heliers and Parnell Tennis Clubs were also
used for the first three days.
A Meet & Greet was held on the Friday evening at the Parnell Lawn Tennis
Club where players and supporters met up with old friends and had a
thoroughly enjoyable evening. Tennis Seniors Auckland did a great job of
catering, ably led by their secretary Julie Blow and her committee.
Sincere thanks to the clubs for the use of their courts and facilities. Special
thanks to the venue controllers, caterers and volunteer helpers – a great
team effort.

TEAMS EVENT
Christchurch 67 teams and 357 players enjoyed three days of competitive
tennis and great camaraderie that only seniors tennis can
19 - 21 April bring to the National Teams Event.
A special thanks to the local clubs for the use of their courts
and facilities and a special thanks to the venue controllers for
their contribution. They did a wonderful job keeping the
matches flowing, especially on the Sunday morning when rain
disrupted play for a short while, contributing greatly to the
smooth running of the event. The Elmwood Tennis Club was
used as the headquarters with Shirley, Cashmere, Spreydon &
Waimairi Tennis Club’s also being involved over all three days.
The Meet & Greet was held at Christchurch Park and the Prize
Giving Dinner/Dance at the Addington Event Centre. Both
social events were outstanding and well supported by the
players who enjoyed celebrating their successes over the
weekend. The Theme for the dinner was “Seeing Red” which
was an outstanding success – when you arrived at the
function; all you saw was a SEA OF RED.
Well done to Canterbury Tennis Seniors hard working
committee for a well presented event.

Seven New Zealanders participated in the Super Seniors Worlds Teams
Event in the men’s and women’s 65+ age groups. The tournament was INDIVIDUALS

Twelve New Zealanders participated in the Seniors Worlds Teams
Event in the men’s 60+ and the women’s 55+ & 60+. The men’s
60+ finished 13th out of 26 countries – they had one of the largest
groups and had good results against Bulgaria, Switzerland and Jeanette, Delwyn, Jill, Karen,
Brazil. The women’s 55+ finished 15th out of 19 countries with

12th out of 17 teams – they had a good win over Brazil in the play-

Fourteen New Zealanders participated in the
men’s & women’s 60+ & 55+ age groups.
While the majority of those who participated
in the Teams Event played, they were also
joined by Philip Hempstead, John Lawrence,
Philip Seeman, Peter Stokes and Stephen
Temple.
Success in the Individual is very hard to come
by. Some of the players were lucky to reach
the second round of the singles and doubles
