PRESIDENT’S WELCOME WELCOME TO DALLAS, TEXAS! We are pleased that you have joined us for the Fall Southwestern District Convention-2018. We anticipate that this is going to be a fun-filled weekend with outstanding singing and many other opportunities to learn from some great teachers and leaders in several areas of our hobby. We are pleased to welcome Jeremy Albright, a recent transplant to the great state of Texas, who is now singing with the Vocal Majority. Jeremy is a member of the Barbershop Harmony Society Board of Directors and would love the opportunity to meet all of you and answer any questions you might have about the workings of the Society. We are also pleased to welcome James Pennington, Chapter Success Manager for the Barbershop Harmony Society. He knows all things relative to the Healthy Chapter Initiative and would be happy to visit with you to help your chapter be more successful. The SWD is happy to welcome MASTERPIECE quartet, International Champions from 2013. They, along with our own current International Chorus Champions, the Vocal Majority, will headline our Saturday night show. Additionally, MASTERPIECE will host a couple of classes during the weekend to help spread the gospel of quartet singing. We really appreciate them being with us this weekend and thank them for sharing their talents and knowledge with us. It is hard for me to believe that I am nearing the end of my second year as your President. The two years have really flown by and there have been many successes of which I am proud. Richard Howell will make an outstanding District President and I congratulate him and thank him for giving of his time and talent in order for the District of Champions to continue to move forward as one of the leading Districts in the BHS. Enjoy the convention and please, take advantage of the many opportunities to visit with friends and sing with old and new friends. EVERYONE IN HARMONY! SOUTHWESTERN DISTRICT HALL OF FAME The Southwestern District’s Hall of Fame was organized and initiated in 1986-1987 to recognize those SWD barbershoppers who have made exceptional, long-standing, unselfish and dedicated contributions to the Chapter, the District, and the Society. This award exists to extol the virtues of such excellence and to focus pride on these achievements and accomplishments. SWD Hall of Fame inductees have been a member of the district for not less than 10 years and of the Society not less than 15 years. Contributions may have been in areas of administration or music, and are often both. Levels include Chapter, Division, District and Society, and contributions may be in the nature of service and activities which have added to the overall well-being of the District and furtherance of our hobby. The service and activities could be in the areas of quartetting, coaching, chorus directing, judging, composing, arranging, administrating, teaching, writing, promoting and others, and generally in some combination of these. SOUTHWESTERN DISTRICT HALL OF FAME 2018 INDUCTEE BROOKS HARKEY Brooks has moved his Membership Recruitment results from “Awesome” to “Increasable.” Can you even imagine successfully recruiting 54 (with more to come) Men of Note new members one-at-a- time!!! Almost always young men that are seniors in high school or beyond. And, as they are growing up, their careers are moving them away from Brooks’ Vocal Majority base to other chapters across America. His achievement is a marvel to be admired. Brooks has two well identified hobbies: working on one of his 17 cars, and shining the light of A Capella harmony singing to uninitiated singers-to-be. His stupendous success has not been unnoticed within our Barbershop Harmony world. He has served on several of our singing Society’s international committees. He has served our Southwestern District as Treasurer, as Director of Membership Development . . . and other ways of commitment. And he has served the VM as well, including their Board of Directors. And, not that it is a surprise, he has been featured a number of times in our Harmonizer international magazine. He was first introduced into the thrill of barbershop chord singing “by an old man” from his church who would not give up in wanting to take Brooks “just one time” to the Town North Dallas Chapter’s chorus rehearsal. Well, there he found the thrill of the 7th chord. Then, a number of years later, he joined the Vocal Majority Chorus in Dallas, and somewhere along his trail he began inviting others to join him in the wonderous, life-changing, discovery of being within four-part harmony chords and blends. Brooks is truly a “pied piper” of thoughtfulness and helpfulness. To know him is to understand a willing-spirit. He often helps the single moms of his recruits with their car and transportation issues. He certainly is worthy of our SWD Hall of Fame distinction. 22 SWD.org
SOUTHWESTERN DISTRICT HALL OF FAME 2018 INDUCTEE JACK STEVENS Jack Stevens became a member of SPEBSQSA in the mid-1970 time-frame when he joined the San Diego Sun Harbor chapter. Prior to that time, he was exposed to the barbershop genre at the US Naval Academy where he sang in several quartets as well as the Naval Academy Glee Club. Moving on to Pensacola for flight training, he formed a quartet calling themselves the “Rip Chords”. Navy deployments took him away from formal barbershopping until the mid-1980’s when he moved to the Maryland/Virginia area where he ended up joining the Alexandria Harmonizers. Besides being their assistant bass section leader, he also held several chapter offices. In 1992, he was the recipient of the Harmonizer Honor Award and in 1997 received their very prestigious Oz Newgard Memorial Award. He served as the Harmonizer’s Music VP as well as their show producer for, as he states, “like forever.” His move to Texas allowed Jack to become a very active member of the Heart of Texas Chorus where he served in a number of positions on the HoT Leadership Team. He was selected their BOTM 18 times and their Barbershopper of the Year in 2002. Jack has served as an International Presentation judge and has served on the faculty of the SWD Harmony Ranch on numerous occasions. In addition to coaching quartets and choruses throughout the Society, Jack also has served on the SWD Events Team since its inception, the last three years as assistant chairman. In fact, Jack was instrumental in establishing the concept of the SWD Events Team. He has served on several occasions on the SWD Board and in 2012, Jack was honored by the Southwestern District as their Barbershopper of the Year. With his love for competition, Jack currently sings with the Marcsmen. To say that Jack is a barbershopper’s barbershopper would be an understatement. He is a total giver of his talents and the Southwestern District has many great reasons to be proud for the many contributions of this 2018 Hall of Famer. 23 SWD.org
