WELCOME BIENVENUE On behalf of the Ontario Association of School District International, I would like to welcome you to our 3rd annual Ontario K-12 International Education Symposium. The theme of this year’s symposium is Directions in Internationalization and is intended to provide guidance for Ontario school districts as they evolve and adapt to meet the needs of our students through a mixture of formal and informal sharing of best practices that support a comprehensive approach to internationalization outlined in Ontario’s Strategy for K–12 International Education in 2015. We have put together a collection of workshops that we hope will provide support and guidance to districts that are just beginning to develop an international education strategy as well as to districts with well-established programs looking for ways to expand and or improve their programs. The majority of the presenters are Ontario colleagues who have graciously volunteered to share their experience, expertise and best practices and help support an ever-increasing global community of learners in Ontario public schools. I would like to offer all our school district colleagues, the Ministry of Education, and our corporate sponsors, heartfelt thanks for their participation and commitment to the success of this day. Au nom de l’Association Ontarienne des Conseils Scolaires International, je vous souhaite la bienvenue à notre 3ème symposium annuel de l’éducation internationale de l’Ontario de la maternelle à la 12ème année. Le thème du symposium de cette année est : « Les voies de l’internationalisation » et il a pour but de fournir un appui aux conseils scolaires de l’Ontario à mesure qu’ils élaborent leurs programmes et de prévoir les adaptations aux besoins de nos élèves grâce au partage d’une panoplie de pratiques réussies qui soutiennent la mise en œuvre de la stratégie ontarienne en matière d’éducation internationale de la maternelle à la 12e année lancée par le ministère de l’Éducation de l’Ontario en juin 2015. Nous avons planifié un éventail d’ateliers qui, souhaitons-le, apportera des informations pertinentes et orientera les actions des conseils scolaires qui en sont à leurs premiers pas dans le développement d’une stratégie touchant l’éducation internationale de même que celles des conseils scolaires qui y œuvrent depuis plus longtemps et qui cherchent à améliorer et faire croitre leurs programmes. La majorité des animateurs d’ateliers sont des collègues de l’Ontario qui partagent volontiers leurs expériences, leurs expertises et les pratiques efficaces afin de soutenir une communauté, toujours grandissante, d’apprenants internationaux dans les écoles publiques de l’Ontario. J’aimerais offrir à tous les collègues des conseils scolaires, aux représentants du Ministère de l’Éducation et aux différents commanditaires, de chaleureux remerciements pour leur participation et leur engagement au succès de cette journée. WHAT IS OASDI? QU'EST-CE QUE OASDI? Ontario Association of School Districts International (OASDI) is a non-profit association comprised of publicly-funded schools in Ontario that have established international student programs. Mission OASDI is committed to advocacy and promotion of international education programs in Ontario public schools. Origin In 2008, Ontario school boards involved in international education, K-12, were invite by colleagues, to participate in exploratory meetings to consider the opportunities for collaboration and cooperation between interested stakeholders. The invitation was extended to school boards across Ontario either through direct contact, if a school board’s international education department was known, or through the director’s office. This meeting of Ontario stakeholders was a logical response to the leadership and effective associations already well-established in other provinces, most notably, British Colombia, Alberta, Manitoba and Nova Scotia, and at a national level, through Canadian Association of Public Schools – International (CAPS-I). Over the past ten years, the organization has evolved and grown to include 43 English and French member districts. OASDI was a significant contributor to the Ontario’s K-12 International Education Strategy 2015 and continues to collaborate with the Ministry of Education on initiatives that will support the goals of this strategy and benefit all schools in Ontario. OASDI has established standards of practice for members, offers districts networking opportunities with Ontario and Pan-Canadian colleagues, gives marketing support, and organizes trade mission, including a recent mission to Russia & the Ukraine in 2018. OASDI members believe in Ontario public education and believe that a consistent standard and quality of international education programming offering by all districts benefits all. This consistency is important for Ontario students as 21st Century learners and for the reputation of Ontario public education in a global context. Areas of Focus 1. 6Our Keynote/Notre discours... Deep Routes to Global Learning Presented by Jim Tayler How is Deep Learning connected to the development of Global Compe- tencies in Ontario students? Is there alignment between the ideas and approaches within a Deep Learning framework and the Ontario Strate- gy for K-12 International Education? Jim will discuss both questions through an exploration of how learning environments, learning partnerships, pedagogical practice, and the leveraging of digital technology, help Ontario students develop important global competencies. Jim will describe how Fullan’s ‘6Cs’ provide a platform for all students to successfully engage in global educa- tion experiences and opportunities. Jim will provide specific examples of students engaged in global learning and will draw upon their voices to provide insight and reflection about their lives as emerg- ing global citizens. Bio... Jim Tayler is principal of Glashan Public School in Ottawa, Ontario, a position he has held since 2012. He is one of the most experienced principals in the Ottawa Carleton School District Board and recognized as a leader at both the school and district level. Since beginning his educational career in 1980, Jim has worked as a teacher, vice-principal, and principal in a variety of settings and schools. Originally from Edmonton, Jim began his teaching career in the northern Alberta community of Peace River and subsequently worked for the Calgary Board Education prior to moving to Ottawa in 1994. Jim has a long time interest in school improvement planning, curriculum development, and professional learning. He is a former member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Executive Council and has presented at their annual conference. During his six years at Glashan, Jim has worked with his staff to strengthen Glashan’s reputation as an innovative school steeped in 21st century pedagogy and contemporary educational approaches. For the past four years, Jim has been a leader in New Pedagogies for Deep Learning, an international educational initiative led by Michael Fullan that is transforming teaching and learning around the world. He has led four international trips for grade eight students (China 2016, Sweden 2017, China 2018, Vietnam 2019). As a result of many successful projects and initiatives, Glashan is featured in an episode of a Brazilian television documentary series on innova- tive schools. In January 2019, Jim was named as one of Canada’s Outstanding Principal by the Learning Partnership. He is also been a member of the Canadian Children’s Museum Renewal Project Advisory Board since 2018. Jim’s wife and daughter are both educators and his son is a two time member of the Canadian Olympic team in the sport of canoe slalom. 7

and professional development. A comprehensive school vision for internationalization addresses the four

jointly at the first OASDI symposium in 2017 on their formal marketing memorandum of understanding.
The three institutions will be back to jointly present on recent initiatives both domestically and internationally
in terms of student recruitment. The presentation will also speak to joint agency recruitment strategies and
future plans for the three organizations memorandum of understanding.

This workshop will introduce the new Ontario guidelines being released in June 2019. The resource document
was developed by the Ontario Association of School Districts International (OASDI) in cooperation, and with
the support of, the Ontario Ministry of Education. They align with the standards promoted by the Canadian
Association of Public Schools-International (CAPS-I) and with the British Colombia MOE resource document
released in 2015 – K-12 International Student Homestay Guidelines. The session will include a rationale, a
review of the framework and highlights, and an open discussion with attendees.

ressource a été conçu par l’Association Ontarienne des Conseils Scolaires - International (AOCSI) avec la
coopération et le soutien du ministère de l’Éducation de l’Ontario. Il concorde avec les normes promues
par l’Association canadienne des écoles publiques - International (ACEP-I) et avec le document ressource
du ministère de l’Environnement de la Colombie-Britannique publié en 2015 et portant sur les directives pour
les familles accueillant un étudiant étranger de la maternelle à la 12e année. L’atelier inclura une justification
et un examen du cadre de travail, les points saillants ainsi qu’une discussion ouverte avec les participants.

Title: Developing Global Competencies through International Travel
Presenter: Jim Tayler, Principal, Glashan Public School, OCDSB
Description:
What impact does international travel have on the development of global competencies in our students?
How does it influence the way our students learn? Learn the answer to these questions and more from
presenter Jim Tayler who has led four international trips for grade eight students from Glashan PS in Ottawa
most recently to Vietnam in March 2019. Jim will cover key components of planning a trip of this scale
including student selection, the importance of the partnership school, and how to create an itinerary that
deepens the learning experience for all participants and builds essential global competencies and citizenship.

Quelle est l’influence des voyages à l’étranger sur le développement des compétences globales de nos
étudiants? Comment influent-ils sur leur apprentissage? Découvrez les réponses à ces questions, et plus
encore, avec Jim Tayler qui a effectué quatre voyages à l’étranger avec des étudiants de 8e année de
l’école publique Glashan (Ottawa), dont le plus récent en mars 2019 au Vietnam. Jim traitera des principaux
points de la planification d’un tel voyage, en abordant notamment la sélection des étudiants, l’importance
du partenariat avec l’école et la façon de créer un itinéraire qui renforce l’expérience d’apprentissage pour
tous les participants et qui développe une éducation civique et des compétences essentielles globales.

YRDSB has adapted to the changing needs of our international student population by learning about each
student and implementing processes to support their needs and ensure they feel welcome and included.
From early on in the admission process, through their arrival, a collaborative approach is used to support their
transition to their new learning environment. This workshop will explore best practices for incoming and existing
students. Participants will receive copies of the recently published YRDSB School Staff Handbook and
International Student Handbook. These resources are used in our system to ensure the needs of international
students are being met.

Le Conseil scolaire de district de la région de York (YRDSB) s’est adapté aux nouveaux besoins de ses
étudiants étrangers en apprenant de chacun d’eux et en déployant des processus pour répondre à leurs
besoins et pour s’assurer qu’ils se sentent bien accueillis et intégrés. Dès le début du processus d’admission,
lors de leur arrivée, nous utilisons une approche concertée afin de les accompagner dans cette transition
vers leur nouvel environnement d’apprentissage. Cet atelier examinera les meilleures pratiques pour les
étudiants déjà et prochainement arrivés. Les étudiants recevront le manuel du personnel scolaire YRDSB
ainsi que le guide de l’étudiant étranger. Nous proposons ces ressources afin de nous assurer de répondre
aux besoins des étudiants étrangers.

Description:
The increase in mental health concerns among youth is well documented. There is widespread recognition
that new and innovative ways to support these students is required. keep.meSAFE was developed in response
to the growing number of mental health related hospitalizations with international students. The program has
combined compassion, innovation and education to focus on reducing stigma, supporting partners, and
providing students with 24/7 culturally and linguistically matched counselling. This session will share stories
and data from our experience with our secondary and post-secondary partners across Canada and discuss
a framework which supports mental health for all.

La question préoccupante de la santé mentale chez les jeunes est bien documentée. L’importance de
soutenir ces étudiants avec des méthodes nouvelles et innovantes est largement établie. Le programme
keep.meSAFE a été développé pour répondre au nombre croissant de cas d’hospitalisation d’étudiants
étrangers liés à la santé mentale. Le programme s’articule autour de la compassion, de l’innovation et de
l’éducation afin de réduire l’ostracisme, de soutenir les partenaires et de fournir aux étudiants des conseils en
tout temps en tenant compte de leurs particularités culturelles et linguistiques. Au cours de cet atelier, nous
entendrons des témoignages et partagerons des informations provenant de notre expérience avec nos
partenaires du secondaire et du postsecondaire à l’échelle canadienne, et nous discuterons d’un cadre qui
soutient la santé mentale pour tous.

Title: Aligning School District Policy with Ontario's Wellness Policy & New OASDI Wellness Guideline for
International Students

The Waterloo Catholic DSB has developed policy supporting international students which aligns with both
the school district's overall wellbeing policy and the newly released "Ontario’s Wellbeing Guidelines for
International Student Attending K-12 Schools". Both strategies take a holistic approach to supporting
international students and to informing all supporting stakeholders, considering the school, custodian,
homestay, partners and community roles. The strategy considers all aspects of the international student's
life: cognitive, emotional, social and physical.

nouvelles directives de bien-être de l’AOCSI pour les étudiants étrangers

Le Conseil scolaire du district catholique de Waterloo a mis en place une politique pour accompagner les
étudiants étrangers, laquelle est conforme à la politique de bien-être générale du district scolaire et aux
toutes dernières « directives de bien-être de l’Ontario pour les étudiants étrangers de la maternelle à la 12e
année ». Ces deux stratégies suivent une approche holistique pour accompagner les étudiants étrangers
et pour informer tous les intervenants qui exercent un soutien en tenant compte du rôle de l’école, du
gardien, de la famille d’accueil, des partenaires et de la collectivité. La stratégie intègre l’ensemble des
composantes de la vie d’un étudiant étranger, tant sur les plans cognitif, émotionnel que social et physique.

This session explores best-case practices in recruiting international students. Participants will learn the most effective channels for attracting students from around the world. Special attention will be paid to the agent channel, and how to best vet, train and work with education recruitment agents. We will also look at key strategies to increase your brand’s reach and ensure that student interaction with your brand is a positive one. We will explore ways to make sure that students are finding the information they want and in a manner that they are comfortable with. Social media, communication strategies, and creating brand ambassadors will be examined. How is Deep Learning connected to the development of Global Competencies in Ontario students? Is
there alignment between the ideas and approaches within a Deep Learning framework and the Ontario
Strategy for K-12 International Education? Jim will discuss both questions through an exploration of how
learning environments, learning partnerships, pedagogical practice, and the leveraging of digital technology,
help Ontario students develop important global competencies. Jim will describe how Fullan’s ‘6Cs’ provide
a platform for all students to successfully engage in global education experiences and opportunities. Jim
will provide specific examples of students engaged in global learning and will draw upon their voices to
provide insight and reflection about their lives as emerging global citizens.

International education has the potential to foster global connections but students must also be able to
fully participate in academic classrooms and technical training programs. Learn how a college and university
classroom experience is replicated in an academic English language proficiency test by integrating reading,
listening, speaking, and writing throughout the test. Discover the range of dynamic features that scaffold
performances such as the ability to review reading passages and lecture notes before and during speaking
and writing tasks. In this session, participants will consider how language tests provide evidence of English
language ability during the post-secondary admission process.

goals. Parents are also looking for a place that their children will be well supported in and safe while they
are studying abroad. This session will focus on how to place international students in an appropriate school
for their needs by learning about the students' interests and academic skills prior to arrival. We will also
highlight helpful tips for working with your Board's staffing team to ensure that each school has the capacity
to welcome the new international students to their new Canadian school each September.
